Rejected from PGM schools

Has anyone been rejected from the PGM program at a school or the college itself. I'm applying to 10 schools all with the PGM program. Im worried because my GPA is low but my SAT score is fine.

Chances are you'll get into them but listed as "Pre-PGM", my roommate in college was considered that because of the same reason you listed. He was a pretty good player but his GPA was somewhere in the 2.5 range so he wasn't accepted into PGM until he got his GPA above 3.0 I believe in college.

Basically exactly how it sounds. You plan on being a PGM student but you have to earn it first. You aren't technically a PGM student but you will be given the opportunity to go to the same classes PGM students go to...other than the PGM classes themselves until you prove you can get your GPA up. The first semester is only 1 hour of classes that have anything golf related. You would basically be a Business/Marketing student (or whatever your PGM school's focus is) until you got your grades up.

That's up to you and what you want your focus to be. I don't know all the specifics of the programs anymore but these PGM programs are going to have a specific focus beyond just golf. Example, I know Ferris State you get a Business and Marketing degree along with your Class A. Ohio State, although not accredited yet (will be soon) focuses on Turf Management and more outside operations. Personally I would want something more Business/Marketing related myself, so if the difference in degrees is worth being in Pre-PGM then that route would make sense to me. Also, you have to factor in location and cost. If you got into one PGM school and it was across the country but Pre-PGM at a University closer to your home and you wanted to be closer to home then maybe that would factor in. I think you should know and research each PGM program and their area of focus before you make a final decision.

I attend MSU and the PGM program is ok to be in. If you aspire to be in the PGA of america there is more than one way to skin a cat. I actually am going about it a different way, not because I didnt get in, but because I wanted to play college golf and you cant do both. There is not enough time, and its kinda hard to be a pro and play in college. If you are a pretty good stick dont worry about not getting in. You can take the Player ability test and pass it with no problem. You need to have a head pro that is willing to accept an apprentice under his management and you can get into the program that way. I am doing that but with a Teaching and Coaching degree. I feel that I have a leg up on the competition because a lot of the graduates from the PGM program go into a job as an assistant with a PGM degree. You could go into an assistant position right out of high school. If you want to get a degree you should get it in what you want, if you want a marketing degree or buisness degree a four year program will get you out the door faster.

The PGM is a great program it introduces you to people and helps to get your foot in the door. If you can get into the program by all means get in. This is America do what you wanna do. But if you wanna get started in life. You would have a leg up on the competition if you passed your PAT and got into the apprentice program and got some real experience under your belt. With the economy the way that it is. Most pro's are looking for a worker they can mold into what they want for their course. They often times want to pay minimum wage, even if you have a degree, and your doing the grut work.

Bottom line. Dont get down if you didnt get into the program. There is more than one way to get into the PGA of America. Chin up and keep hitting the little white ball around!
