All of the Mizuno F-50's that I've held and hit seem to set up square, I checked their website to see if they have face angle measurements but they don't list that spec. I've only had my 15 degree for a few weeks but it's the best 3 wood I've tried, I usually draw or hook my woods and I've been able to hit some cuts with the F-50 which, in addition to a square setup, leads me to believe the weighting and face angle is pretty close to neutral. It's long for me as well with a nice solid feel despite the composite crown construction. I picked mine up new on EBAY for $100, good deals for the F-50 seem pretty easy to come by. Might be worth an e-mail to Mizuno regarding face angle to be sure or try and hit one at a local shop if you like the appearance. Good luck.

T-60 is closed. i have a T-40 tour and that is also closed.

regarding the F-50's. i have tried the two that my uncle owns. they are good but they do set up closed but only slightly.

i want a square one because of visual preference. i COULD use the Mizuno's and put a shaft in with a very stiff tip or just use an X flex but i would still rather have a square one.

i often notice tour ones being advertised as open in the classifieds but i need something i can get here in the U.K unfortunately.

Dan,

Would you consider componant FW woods? There are some very good ones available and with many of the reputable componant retailers you can have them hand pick a square or slightly open head. I looked into the Ashton X-1 and X-1D (deep face) because they were highly recommended to me by several people and I really like the plain black head. The specs are dead square but that usually means + or - 1 degree, I checked with a 2 sellers here in the states who told me they could send me a head +1 closed, square or -1 open and the Ashton head sells for about $49.50 US. If you plan on having a new shaft installed anyway a componant head may be the way to go if you can identify one that suits you.

i have a 980f and it certainly isn't square. neither are the other Titleist fw woods i have seen/used. sorry guys, i'm not trying to be a fussy Word not allowed hole, i just can't find a club that is square. i see alot of manufacturers advertise their clubs as square but they look closed. an extreme case of this is the Cobra X Speed driver. a lesser example is that my 983k, which is advertised by Titleist as being square, is slightly closed but only by a fraction.

just to explain what my idea of a square clubhead is.

when you hold the club in the address position and point the face directly at the target the shaft should be at 90 degrees to the target line. also the club should be sat freely on its sole, so holding it square/open doesn't count.

This might not be the best picture but it shows my point about the T-60. as far as i am concerned it looks the same as my T-40 Tour which is 100% certainly closed. The only clubs that i trust to sit square without me properly inspecting are TaylorMade's TP line of drivers, so hopefully their fairway woods will too. it's just a shame they don't have pear shaped heads like Titleist woods, though.

sonartec ss3.5 seems pretty square.

Second the Sonartecs. I have an SS-03 19* and that looks square to a touch open in my eye. It plays neutral as well, no draw bias.

With regards to the Ashtons -> when you buy a head there is a sticker that tells you weight, loft, lie and face angle. I bought an Ashton X-1 19* that was .5* closed, but I didn't specify when it was ordered. I'm sure if you order one the guy will pick a square to open one if you specify. The X-1's have quite a bit of bulge if this a problem. I haven't shafted it up, so can't give you any first hand experience as to how it plays. From what I hear, they play neutral.

Ashton

Good luck in your search. :man_in_love:

I've had two T60's, 3wds though, and both were square.

Just put a SQ 3wd in the bag this weekend and it's square as well.

Those pictures don't tell the whole story. You can make any club looked closed/open depending on the angle of the shot.

Very true about pictures, it is very easy to manipulate a clubface for a picture. If you want a good neutral clubface go with either the Adams or Sonartec, I am biased because they are what I have in the bag but I have them in the bag because I was looking for the same thing as you. I know they are a little more expensive but I still think with the right combo Sonartec is the best fairway wood and for the stronger player hybrid combo on the market today.

A third vote for the Sonartec. I have a 16* tour issue that sits very square. I put a Harmon counter-balanced shaft in it (S flex), and it is very workable.

On a tangental note, I'm sitting here watching Corey Pavin work fairway woods left, right, high and low...I'd love to hear his comments on equipment since he switched to TM weaponry...

good luck in your search.

If you want to be sure, get a tour issue TM TP that was actually measured.

On a side note, in my bizarre experience I had the Sonartec Tour Van build me two FWs (NP99s). The 3W was dead square, the 5W was supposed to be square but at address it sure looked closed and I was constantly making little adjustments and screwing up the shot more times than not. And I know it was closed simply by ballflight in relation to my other 5Ws.

Then two years later, I pick up Titleist 904Fs and the same darn thing. 3W dead square, but I swear the 5W is way closed - worse than the Sonartec.
