USGA Qualifying Failure Count -

I can't count the number of times I didn't qualify for a USGA event but I can tell you the three times I entered PGA Tour Qualifying school and didn't make it. The most important thing is you are out there trying. The guys at my home course with so called 1 handicaps never try. The more tournament golf you play the better your game will get. Don't get down on yourself. Try to learn every time you tee it up. The game of golf is a hell of a lot harder when you have to play by the rules and putt everything out. The experience is the most important factor. Keep grinding and when you do qualify your sense of accomplishment will be that much sweeter.

I am - was inside the line after 18 last year - made double on the first hole in the afternoon and shot 78 to not even sniff it. But I don't want to go to the sites we have in Illinois - looking to maybe go to WI, IN, or an MI site - never score well at the sites we have in IL this year....

Put me down as a "maybe".

Like "maybe" I can find a game capable and "maybe" I can find a caddy....and then "maybe" my work schedule will allow it.

Or "maybe" I'll win Mega Millions and then I can at least take care of the work schedule part.

My efforts to qualify for USGA events have been full of fail....never gotten through in anything. I've tried a bundle of times.

My scoring average in qualifying rounds is 74.35 and I came within a couple at the Publinks one year. Other than that, I haven't really sniffed getting through.

I think I have the opposite problem - I only think about qualifying and play as such - I just need to start trying to go low and winning the damn thing. I miss so many things by a stroke or two - I think I'm just playing too safe in these things. I need to treat it like a casual round where I'm just trying to make as good a score as possible. Sometimes I'm just trying to make par when I need to give myself more "green lights" - at least, I think that might be part of my problem. Might just be talent and relative skill level...

That seems incredibly unlikely, unless the standard deviation is absurdly low (ie: you shoot between 74-75 every round). I'm not really questioning it, it would just seem that you would have a bunch of 70's in that bunch, and to toss up the odd sub-par round and not sniff a USGA qualifier is unusual. I've been within a couple of the Pub Links a few times and was one out of a Mid-Am playoff last year, and I've only broken par in one USGA qualifier. Goes to show you that consistency means nothing, I guess...

You about got it....most of my 36 hole totals have been in the +2 to +8 range. At the Publinx site I frequented, it usually took -2 to -5 to get out. My last two 36 hole totals at Publinx qualifiers were 147 and 150....not even sniffing. My best effort was 144 when 142 got out.

At Am qualifiers, my last two efforts were 150 (missed by 4) and 152 (missed by a million).

Hahaha, sounds about right. Sometimes it really just doesn't pay to be consistent. One year I missed alternate by a shot for the PubLinks and shot 72-71=143 (-1). Doesn't help when the 2 qualifiers toss up 136...

My favorite is shooting something respectable in the morning (70 - 72, around there) and thinking you have a chance, only to see a 63, two 65s, and two 67s up there. I've seen the flip side, too, where the US Am qualifier I played in last year is the day before the start of the Western AM about 3 miles away, so there's a bunch of real sticks there from all over the country, and 140 medals...that 150 really hurt last year...

This is perhaps a bit of a thread hijack, but I'm just wondering how the USGA verifies handicaps for entrants in the qualifiers? I'm from Canada so just trying to figure out how that would work.

You have to provide contact info to someone at your home course who can verify the index. That said, I'm not sure how often they look into it (could be for every entrant, could be random, I have no idea).

What is your handicap? The handicap restriction for Publinks isn't as stringent as the Amateur or US Open.

It's not to say that qualifying is any easier...

I'm a lowly 13, with a target of < 10 before the year is out....if it ever starts!!! Arrrrrgggh
Pretty sure I can do that, ballstriking isn't bad, need to practice short game more, which I started doing towards the end of last year, and the confidence and scores were getting better from that practice.
