Got my issue of Golf Magazine a couple days ago and saw a Taylormade ad that I thought was interesting. It shows how some of the guys have their r11's setup.


Dustin Johnson

FCT- Lower
ASP- Open
MWT- 10g toe, 1g heel

Launch- 13.3
Spin-2,500 rpm
Ball Speed- 180 mph
Distance- 334 yds


Justin Rose

FCT- Lower
ASP- Closed
MWT- 10g toe, 1g heel

Launch- 11.5
Spin-2,600 rpm
Ball Speed- 165 mph
Distance- 313 yds


Sean O'hair

FCT- Standard
ASP- Open
MWT- 10g toe, 1g heel

Launch- 9
Spin-2,700 rpm
Ball Speed- 166mph
Distance- 308 yds


Martin Kaymer

FCT- Lower
ASP- Open
MWT- 1g toe, 10g heel

Launch- 9.5
Spin-2,300 rpm
Ball Speed- 167 mph
Distance- 305 yds

Is anyone able to explain how the ASP works? I can only imagine it will affect how it sits on the ground when club is on the ground. But if the club is hovering ...

Rule of thumb is that ball speed is 1.5x of clubhead speed. So a 100 mph clubhead should yield about 150 mph ball speed (assuming a good smash factor.)

A typical 105 should be around 155-157 if you are in the right shaft....I am around 106-108 and will usually have a ball speed around 160-163. Shaft is so important in getting these numbers. Although, when I hit the stock R11 with the 60 gram Blur-Stiff in 9 degree...was near 170 ball speed!! Ridiculous what that shaft does..!! Have to try the 65 gram in the TP!!

Yes it does only affect the way the club looks while it is on the ground which is where most people determine if it "sits" open or closed and make grip adjustments accordingly. You can then hover the club all you like.In the closed position the metal triangle sticks out of the base causing the club to sit closed at address. In the open position the metal triangle is up in the base of the club, makes the club head roll right at address giving an open face angle. If you hover the club from the start never touching the ground and adjust your club in the air then you are not in need of ASP.

I tend to hover and hold the face what looks to me to be square even if the face angle is set closed. ( I play a R9 and set it 1* closed ) So, what you are saying above, is that this cancels out the ASP? What about setting the face closed? would hovering the club square at address cancel this, too? I've always wondered....

Does Kaymer even play an R11? The tournaments I've seen him in he's still suing the supertri? I thought DJ was too but maybe I'm wrong.

DJ has been playing the R11 all year, Kaymer has still been with the Supertri so far but saw he was gonna make the switch so we will see

They have the guys settings posted somewhere that I saw... Even did a commercial about it I think.

Kaymer doesn´t switch his equipment as fast as others, I guess he will keep the Supertri for quite some time.

I am a little surprised with the spin rates. They seemed a little higher than what's consider optimal.

Kaymer is 10 in the heel and 1 in the toe so he's different. It makes sense for the others if they are trying to avoid left.

I think he's probably referring to the fact that some maybe have different weights in their heads. Each head was probably different, and the guys all might like different swing weights.

TM left it as 10 and 1, because thats the combo the retailers will sell to the average joe.

Justin Rose increased 30+ yards?!?! Something is off on either his beginning yardage or the end result. He is still averaging 286 yards according to PGAtour.com driving stats (yes I know how they take this measurement and might not be the most accurate). Another TaylorMade skew of the numbers. Good for them. I hope they continue to sell the tinker toy drivers in which 98% of those who purchase will never mess with the settings. Me? I will keep bombing the Krank Rage driver. It has one setting.
