Hardstepping and softstepping

Does hardstepping once change a s300 to a s400 ? Does softstepping once make an s300 into a s200? Or is the change some where between s300-s400 and s300-s200?

Nope.... The difference between those shafts is weight, and not much of it. They're all made to the same flex characteristics

Soft and hard stepping only really affects flex, about 1/3 either way.

s200 s300 s400 are weights of the shafts

hardstepping\softstepping are adjusting the flex of the shafts.

Like others said before me S200 and S400 are sub flexes of the same shaft S300, sorted by weight, , but the reason they do this, is because weight is a factor for flex.
Heavy as S400 = Stiffer by approx <2 Cpm
Light like S200 is softer by approx <2 Cpm,
Medium weight is spot on S300.but still +/- a few

They will still vary, due to minor weight and difference in wall thickness, but to get them all perfect in slope, you can choose the Tour Issue, who is the best sorted shafts.(S400 and X-100 only)

Soft stepping means putting your 3 iron shaft on your 4 iron head. You loose approx 1/3 of a flex class that way. Its 9 CPM from S down to R flex, so 1x soft stepping is equal to a drop of 3 cpm.
2 times soft stepping gives 6 cpm weaker, and 3 times a full flex class. ( 2 times is 3 iron shaft in 5 iron head and so on)
Hard stepping is the other way around, a gain of 1/3 flex class or 3 Cpm pr times stepped

The choice between hard stepping once, or soft stepping a stiffer shaft twice (gives the same flex), is a question about Cpm slope in the short irons.
If you like Cpm slope to go on all the way up to SW, soft step twice. If you want the slope to turn on your 8 iron and the flatten out or go down, hard step once.

EDIT - A few words about stepping

Since most shafts are made as 2-PW, it means that all wedges share the same shaft (PW.GW,SW,LW)
When you hard step 1x you move your PW shaft down to the 9 iron.

Now all your stuff from 9,PW,GW,SW,LW plays the same PW shaft.
If the GW SW and LW has higher SW then the PW they will play softer than flex by 1 CPM pr. Sw point. (same shaft length)

If you softstepp twice, you end up with the same flex (1x hard stepped R300 or 2x soft stepped S300 is the same flex = R 1/3)
(S300 hard stepped 1x or X-100 soft stepped 2 times is the same flex = S 1/3)

But since PW is the strongest shaft, and you softstepp 2x, that means that your S300 2x softstepped PW shaft is for your SW, the #9 2x soft stepped S300 is for your GW.
Now the Cpm slope will raise all the way from your 3 iron up to SW, only weakened by extra Swing weight in the GW,SW,LW (1:1)
