In a conference call on Tuesday, 2010 Masters champion Phil Mickelson said he considered a Spanish-inspired menu for the Champions Dinner at the Masters in April. Mickelson was hoping Ballesteros would be in attendance and would pay tribute to the Spaniard with a menu of food from his home nation.

Unfortunately, as the AP reports, Mickelson says it appears Seve will not be coming to Augusta

Phil is goofy and the all the family trauma/attention things are overplayed .... but the guy does some great things too

If you missed it,

Phil planned the entire Masters dinner in tribute to Seve Ballesteros who inspired him to become a Masters champ and pro golfer. It was just learned that due to the battle that Seve is waging in his fight against cancer he will not be able to attend.

Is Phil an awesome person or what?

Exactly. The guy has been on Tour for almost 20 years and has signed countless autographs; given tons of fist bumps to the crowd; smiles and enjoys himself most of the time; never (or very rarely) curses or slams clubs; given his time and money to charity; is honest in his answers to media questions; etc.

Yet there are those who think he has faked it for 20 years. Wow. Might he be a little arrogant around other players? Sure...but I would be too if I had his career record.

Good on you Phil for this kind gesture. Get well Seve!

I don't know why Phil has a rep as being false or fake.
He seems to be very genuine and aware of his stature in the game. He also goes out of his way to do the right thing most of the time, and this is a classic example.
Just my .02 worth.
TW may have been the most dominant player ever, but we've discovered he was/is lacking in character.
I hope maybe they can have Seve there on a web feed to the Champions dinner at Augusta, that would be great!!

The cancer thing was a bad deal ... but , not uncommon ,some times a private matter, and not over played (Zinger had cancer too, remember that , didn't think so ).
It's more the always troubled pregnancies .... the arthritis , the this , the that , and you know more is coming. Phil likes drama , no doubt about it.

That's an awful thing to wish upon someone because they hold an opinion about something. And don't bother defending your comment, I get the point the op was trying to make. Zinger had bone cancer in his shoulder and kept putting off the biopsy even though his shoulder hurt because he wanted to play golf (ryder cup etc.)----know which shoulder, didn't think so (right). They made a ton about it and were always wishing him well and went on and on when he returned after beating it. Even more so than with Amy Mickelson since he was a player. How you keep Amy's cancer private is beyond me since she was at the majority of the tournaments Phil played in and suddenly wasn't there. Phil may like drama and may be a phony with smiling and spending all that time signing autographs, but I will take that anytime over arrogant Tiger Woods who has no time for anyone including as it turns out his wife and kids. That is one thing you can say about Tiger---he isn't a phony---he is what he has always been. A great golfer with infantile arrogant egocentric personality traits. His positive press came from his carefully crafted photo ops, and a false media image put forth by his agents and a drooling golf media and sponsors that wanted a trophy wife (think GM for one).
