Butt against the wall drills

anyone have any

I want to work on keeping my butt against the wall and the same spine angle as address through my swing. Anyone know of any good drills, I normally come off the wall and spine angle decreases.

Only one I know of is using a bench behind you and keeping your butt on it and slide against it during the swing. Havent used it yet but would like to hear some others as well.

Post a video. Early extending is tough to fix. In my opinion you need to get to the root cause of why you are coming off the wall. I had some early extending issues that were caused by an improper shoulder plane. Fixed the shoulder plane and the early extending went away.

well my backswing is good and my should plane is good at address and through the backswing. Its when I go into the downswing I really go into early extension, its my main swing fault right now. I feel if I do the chair drill [media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYzdqqpZzAY&feature=related[/media] It will really help out on my downswing, will fix my should plane on the downswing etc.

It's also referred to as 'humping the goat' - best swingfault name ever, and one I too suffer from.....

yea in that video you posted I see ross fisher doing it but the angle is bad. I dont think dustin J does it though and neither does Tiger, they have their hips cleared but are still on the wall.

I think I once saw Greg Norman do this drill. Shove a ball under both of your toes and practice full swings. It will keep you from "humping the goat".

only real way to tell is by video, to me it "feels" like I dont but I do, lol. Need to ingrain the feeling of staying on the wall with a chair or something

Not sure why it's a goat... if the term had originated in the UK it would almost certainly involve a sheep. Any bestiality jokes there would normally involve New Zealanders or Welshmen and sheep.

The 'hump' look to it remains, though - whatever animal it is.

My Pro told me i had to [b]feel[/b] like I was dipping down/increasing my spine angle on my downswing - like the feeling you get when you're leaning over and start 'toppling' forward.... when I managed this, I could swear I dipped down a couple of inches at least.. yet video showed I kept my angle and didn't dip at all.

That 'spot the goat' clip shows various golfers and the various amount of 'early extension' - some none or slightly the opposite (Hogan) , but Ross Fisher definitely shows it. I was surprised as I'd not noticed it at full speed when i'd seen him swing on the telly.

just worked on the chair drill. Made the chair a little longer for the hip slide with a thin board across the top. I must say its a completely different feel. I do feel like Im almost dipping down from the top of the swing, but in reality Im not like someone else said above. I almost feel like dustin johnson going through the ball and keeping my spine angle all the way through. Honestly though I cant believe I dont see much teaching on this, such a critical part of the swing.

Could you explain the improper shoulder plane you had that caused this and what you did to prevent it? I too suffer from early extention, but have never heard of shoulder plane being the cause. Thanks.

Trying opening your front foot and pointing it slightly towards your target. This should give you some room to move and allow you to get your hips around. It worked for me!

Im guessing it was too flat into impact and maybe backswing. To fix the shoulder plane just keep the same spine angle all through your swing and your shoulder plane will be consistant. To keep the same spine angle use the chair drill and watch your swing on video, You will need to stay against the wall and your head shouldnt dip or rise at all.

There is also a great tip from Monte Scheinblum on a youtube video somewhere...he sticks a dowel in the ground to the left and slightly behind him that is visible in peripheral vision at the top of the back swing. He focuses on moving the hips towards the dowel on the down swing. As other posters mention above the, shoulder plane is also critical. If you feel your left shoulder turning well under your chin and your right elbow/shoulder high at the top of the backswing you are half way to a fix.
