Played at River Plantation CC today. I must say that they have the friendliest staff that I have encountered since being out here in Texas. When we were walking to th clubhouse one of their employees said good morning and thanked us for coming to their course today. The guy in the clubhouse was also very awesome. He even got us out (twosome) before a foursome tee'd off so that we would have a quick round. After the round my buddy was trying to find where to return the cart and a worker said to not worry about it and took the cart for him. Hospitality like this will definitely have me coming back again. Plus it was a nice little course. You have to earn your fairways there. Not a lot of fairway space on most holes. Greens were in great shape.

Just an FYI on Woodforest, pulled them up to make a t-time Sunday, haven't played out there in a while, so I forget what their rates were, but I know there were atleast slightly higher, looks like they've had a rate decrease, atleast for the next couple months, $65 for the w/ends, $50 on w/days (still $45 on Tues).

Anyone played Redstone (Golf Club of Houston) recently? is it worth the $165 theyre charging right now?

Timber creek is in really good shape right now too-- down in Friendswood.
Is it still $165? I played out there during the latter part of the summer and the rates were different (cheaper) from what was posted on the site. This was while they were still Redstone, however.

I didn't realize they were back on GolfNow. I'm making an assumption here, but I sincerely doubt it's going to be worth even $100 until right around The Shell. When I played in late in the summer, we paid around $70-80 and while I really enjoyed it, that's about the most I would have paid.

was your round during twilight? I know the rates are lower but im not sure if I trust this new management company enough to pay full price right out of the gate. I played it in summer of 2012 and it was around $85. Not sure about with the new management company.

Correct, it was a twilight round.

Getting in on Friday at George Bush. After getting the clubs and the car should be about 2:15-2:30 PM.

Anywhere good I can get out by say 3:30 so I can squeeze in 18 (sunset at 7:30)?

Thanks.
To play around the airport, you have 3 excellent courses to choose from, as Lobopro mentioned, Tour 18 is real nice, and normally has good deals for twilight (Golfnow, or get on their site and it will take you to the deals), Cypresswood is a hair closer, and a tad nice (one of the, if not the best, public course in Houston), they aren't on golfnow, and even though they probably have a twilight deal, it's going to be the more expensive course (worth every bit of it though), or Oakhurst, about the same distance as Tour 18, its just as nice as Tour 18 and normally has a decent twilight deal (and imo, would be easier to play by yourself/get teamed up with a 2/3 some, on a Fri a/noon). Or, just as close is Redstone (Houston Golf now?), where they play the Shell Open, but it's going to cost you $100 or so.

My vote would be for Redstone Tournament course. Great condition this time of year.

Anyone played La Torretta lately? Might be playing there Tuesday.
I've played it twice in the last week and it's in fantastic shape.. Greens are firm and quick, fairways are a bit thin but pretty firm as well and the tee boxes are great.

I've played it for $20 and $31 through EZLinks (TeeOff) and that has to be the best bargain around right now.

I'm going to be staying in the energy corridor on the west end for the next bit and will have a chance to get 2 or 3 rounds in. I'd like to give tour 18 a shot. Any other suggestions? It looks like most of the recommendations posted in this thread recently are a bit north of town. I don't mind driving a bit for the right course but was wondering if there is anything a bit closer for me? Thanks

Blackhorse and Cypress Lakes are both good tracks and can be had for good prices on GolfNow.

I agree with this. While warming up on the range and standing on the first tee box, I thought man this course is in great shape! Everything was in amazing shape except the fairways, which are rock hard. I'm sure this will change in a few weeks/months, but it's an absolute steal at ~$30/person we paid through TeeOff. The greens were a pretty slow, but they were in great shape.

These were the two I ended up going with. Played Blackhorse south yesterday. Course was in good shape, nothing really stood out. Greenside bunkers were deep and I was in them a few too many times. Wind was blowing pretty hard also and I got punished for some shots I thought were hit well.

I got paired up with a member from Cypress Lakes at Blackhorse and we played there today. Wind blowing again. The course and especially the greens were pretty sandy I thought, however the greens still rolled well. Front 9 I found tough with a good amount of water in play. My ball was rolling out into all the wrong spots. On the back 9 I started to settle in and played quite well.

Overall I enjoyed both tracks. Will probably catch tour 18 on my way out to the airport and that will be it. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Glad you got a few rounds in. Wish they'd been in better shape, but it could have been worse I guess!

Tour 18 seems to be really hit or miss. The times I've been out there it's been great, however.
tour 18 is definitely hit or miss. I've played it when it was in phenomenal shape, and I've played it where it was no better than a $15 goat ranch. I like the course, but it's hard to justify it not knowing what conditions are like.

Played in a scramble at Cinco Ranch yesterday afternoon. Course was in pretty good shape. The tee boxes and greens were really nice. They are redoing a lot of traps out there. So while we were playing they had crews working in the traps on several holes. That was my first time playing that course. If you have not played that course before you can definitely get into trouble by not knowing where to hit the ball. Several times yesterday I had a great drive only to drive out and discover that water comes into play at the end of the fairway or the fairway ends into a ditch.

#11 gets a lot of people off the tee and #15 is another one you need to know how much of the corner to cut off. Glad you enjoyed it. I live about a block from 13 tee
