Laundry detergent for modern fabric.

B.O.....is it just me?

Just wondering if any y'all folks have a trick to getting the STANK out of wicking type fabric that most golf and gym attire seem to be made of these days. I love the modern look, feel, and performance of the wicking material, but they seem to STANK way worse than plain ol cotton. Even after a wash, they never seem to keep the fresh smell for very long. Generally don't sweat more than average, and don't think I'm a stinker.

So, what detergent and other tricks do you guys have for me?

Gain HE original scent, then hang them outside to dry.

 

Do not use fabric softener.

I use Arm and Hammer Oxi Clean Power Gel for detergent and Snuggles fabric softener sheets and my clothes smell great, last long, and no stains.

I use whatever detergent my wife buys, and I always use a liquid fabric softener. I never dry my clothes in the dryer. I also wear deodorant, and at the end of a round (in the worst heat and humidity you can imagine playing golf in), I still dont stank. Perhaps a re-evaluation of your deodorant is in order.

as mentioned above, do not use any fabric softners as it clogs the holes in the fabric used to wick the moisture out.

This stuff was by far the best I've used. Definitely gets rid of the performance fabric funk.

Thanks for the personal hygene lesson. Always has to be 1. I've worn a kevlar vest for as long as a couple of days straight through in the middle of the summer on the geo-thermal warmed streets of NYC and smelled like a dozen roses....but a round of golf or a gym session and the wicking fabrics be stankin.

I've been a big fan of Tide Sport with Febreeze-- smells ok and takes the stank out with no issues.

I know my post came across as quite a bit sarcastic (and perhaps there was a slight hint intended) but I was being serious. I have bought a brand of deodorant and after a couple of hours at work on the dock or on a golf course, I could definitely sense the funk. I have changed, and have no issues now, and I wear the same shirts to work that I wear to the course.

The source of the odor is bacteria that is trapped and retained in the fabric over time. The wicking fabrics are actually pretty intelligent and perform as expected...they perform a function, they're not just "polyester fabric". If any of you guys are in your forties or later - you'll remember the polyester fabric of leisure suits and shirts....and it made you hotter than hot. It was awful.

In the shirts today - while they've figured out a way to remove the sweat from your skin and let it expose and dry to the atmosphere - bacteria remains trapped in the fabric which for most people creates a "sour moldy towel" odor over time. There is the same problem with front-loader washing machines as well. What's worse is that the fabric either stops working (if you use fabric softener) and doesn't wick as well; or it starts to stink.

Either use the Win stuff (which removes the bacteria) or a mask (like Fabreze or deodorant) or buy new shirts every other season.

WIN is missing from the market place although their webpage is still up. After doing some checking by reading reviews online the other sports detergent don't work. The Tide sport pictured above is probably worth a shot.......I haven't read anything on that yet.

I wash all my UA and Nike compression gear as well as gym attire in Woolite Dark Protection and use a liquid fabric softener in the wash as well as Downy Simple Something sheets in the dryer; 2 per load.

+2. Have never had any issues with my DriFit or ClimaCool shirts or any clothes for that matter when using Win.

Golf shirts would be considered to be a "Synthetic Base Layer" about halfway down the page.

I live in Florida, use clima cool, dri fit and always use fabric softner, and my clothes smell dandy.



Lavender scent softner and your clothes will smell like your boyfriend washed them...



Which is not a bad thing when it comes to smelling good.

I agree with the OP. Mine dont really smell after washing or sitting in my closet, but after i perspire in them i do seem to smell and i don't normally smell at all/ever. Only in my synthetic material athleticware.
