I'm having some wedges built and thnking of building them with the C Tapers

I play KBS tours in my irons - but I want to lower my wedge trajectory (GW and SW) and thinking of pairing the wedges with the c taper.

I have heard not so good reviews of the hi revs.

Am I over thinking this? I was orginally going to stick with KBS tours in the wedges but I am getting caught up in the hype. Will these work well in wedges or will the feel be so different from the KBS tours that it will screw me up?

Thanks

hmmmm... that is a good question...! if you need more spin in your wedges with lower flight - i would go with s400s.

Swarny looking at your results. The numbers look great but is the spin a little too low?? 4300k is 700rpm below the tour avg for 6 iron no?? Also do you have your specs for your driver compared to your 6 iron.
Thanks

john - those are BIRDKILLER14s numbers not mine. i spin the ball slightly higher, swing slightly slower and ball travels slightly shorter than he does with 6 iron and driver. i'll let him take this from here - maybe he could throw some screen shots up from his session tonight?! driver too.

One thing I will not change are my S400 in wedges.. does not matter what the other stuff is.. s400 in my wedges is home sweet home.

Just back from a demo day, and talking to the Mizuno rep he is HOPING to have a demo shaft by FALL!!!!! As far as getting them in house to build custom orders he hasn't heard a word yet.....not the news I was hoping to hear :shout:
I emailed my rep about this last night, hopefully he'll reply sometime tomorrow and if so, I'll let you know what he says. I'd love to be able to order these straight from Mizzy instead of having to deal with swapping shafts and getting everything setup right again.

Any ideas how these would play for a low launch high spin player? I spin the Ball like crazy but have an extremely low launch. I do don't have any recent numbers from an iron but the last time I hit a driver I was at a 6 launch with 4200 spin and 169 ball speed, if that helps would love to hear some thoughts .

Sorry guys it was jammed packed tonight and I had no way of getting on a TRACKMANrussian_roulette.gif But I will be out there tomorrow night to give it another try!!!! On a side note with the people asking about the spin being too low after looking at my screenshot of my 6 iron, you guys have to remember TRACKMAN estimates roll out and will give you roll out on a SW!!!!! TRACKMAN only tracks the ball while it is in flight and NO I have not had any problem with holding greens!!!!!!!! More to come tomorrow!!!

and.... it is not like you are using PENTA's on this particular TRACKMAN. these are NIKE range balls - some of them the old ugly winter balls that ranges tend to pull out during the crappy time of year... which for here in the NW this year has been ongoing - with the exception of today where we will see the sun :)

Awesome reviews and opinions!! Thank you to everyone involved in sharing on this topic!!

Curious if there will be a comparison with the C-Taper and the Nippon Modus 3. Both shafts at least on paper seem to be in the same mold and have had similar hype...lower trajectory, lower spin and smooth.

I would be really interested to see how these compare.

They won't just ship the heads. Have a guy here in Atlanta that does nothing but custom club sales, every Mizuno set he orders for customers he has to pull the shafts and install what was the shaft selected during the fitting. Sometimes there will be an offering that he doesn't have to pull, but not often.
I wonder if I would be able to order the shafts and send them to Mizzy to install? Or maybe Mizzy would ship me the heads only......not likely.

i have hit both but not as extensively as METALHEAD. the biggest difference i think is in spin as i remember the MODUS 3 spinning more. neither one of us has done SIDE-by-SIDE testing on these, done two months apart... hopefully he can chime in...

WANTED TO ADD THIS - remembered right after i submitted the post. i felt the MODUS 3 felt more like a DG only with some crazy mid section kick!!!

Really want to try these in my S56's with KBS Tours.

Contacted Ping and they won't reshaft with a shaft they don't carry, makes sense with quality control, warranty, etc. Will have to wait until Ping actually carries this shaft in their custom options.

I think finding someone local to do it could be tough with Ping's custom tuning port weight and all.

Thanks for the review. I've just ordered a set of X flex.

My path has taken me from PX 6.0 Flighted (not at all what I needed) to Tour Concept X1's which were sooooo smooooth to KBS Tour X flex which didn't gain me anything to DG X100's. So, hopefully the new C-Tapers will do the trick.

Mizuno optimiser put me in X100's, Project X 6.5, KBS Tour X with a 92mph 6 iron speed. I really hope these work else thats another $300 of shafts to be lying around in a cupboard.

Thanks again.

I did indeed hit the Modus3 and the C-tapers side by side, but no trackman numbers to support. The Modus flights lower than the C-taper with more feel and workability - aka like Swanry30 stated 'DG like'...distance was on par with C-taper (but I only had a 6i to compare with). but I suspect the Modus spins more than the C-taper but without trackman support hard to tell. The Modus3 imo is a great shaft, and far better than SPB on all accounts....but these are all great shafts in the right hands and the right swing, it a matter of what works best for you.

Swanry30 and Metalhead,

Can you rank the shafts we are talking about as far as trajectoryand distance that you see, ie: what is the highest launching and/or the longestdistance shafts? Normally with me the higher the launch the shorter thedistance, I play in the wind a lot so I’m looking at a shaft that still gets memy distance and that I can control in the wind. The PX has worked pretty well for me but being the "ho" I am the search in never ending.

Thanks guys

Very grateful for the thread and the information. I can feel the familiar sense of excitement at something potentially significantly better and rushing out to get them, but can also imagine that they end up being no better than what i have, or worse finding something about them i dont like after the honeymoon wears off. Is it possible to post some comparative average trackman data for your PX vs Brad's C-Taper?

It sounds like the extra 20 (?) yards Vs DG comes from the same launch and ~1000 rpm less spin? Can you comment on what you think this will do to your ability to stop the ball on hard fast greens?

Sorry to sound skeptical and i do appreciate your effort - but it seems too good to be true.

Sorry to reply so late to the original post, and I also apologize for not reading the rest of the posts, but in replay to the original:

did you try RIFLE shafts? You say you tried TT, PX and KBS but couldn't find the perfect thing. Well I'd say you didn't need to wait for the C-Taper, you should've tried the RIFLE shafts, either straight RIFLE or RIFLE FLIGHTED, and sounds like you hit it good, so probably in 6.5 or even 7.0 if you like it heavy. The dude at FST that developed KBS shafts is the guy who left Royal Precision anyways, and the KBS shafts aren't too much of a stretch from the RIFLEs. Not PX, but RIFLE. I think you're going to be surprised.

not skeptical at all - and appreciate your comments/questions.

stopping the ball on hard fast greens shouldn't be a problem. they are similar (ballpark) spin than the PX6.5s (less but ballpark) and i still back the ball up with out any problems - PENTA TP. some players who have issues holding greens may need to stay with their current shaft or try the modus 3.

the big thing is wind shots. the similar DG launch keeps the ball flight relatively untouched without the worry of ballooning.

will try to get some screen shots up soon - really busy at work and my evenings have been jammed. working on it :)

YEARS ago i tried the RIFLEs and really liked them. thanks for putting them back on my radar. i will have to check them out and will consider the 7.0 for the weight. very aware of the KBS/ROYAL PRECISION relationship.

I too am wanting to get a new set of MP 53's with these shafts. I had my pro call and here is the jist:

- Do not offer C-Taper as customs option
- Will be around August or September before they will even be looking at offering it as an option
- NO, they will not just send the heads. Have to order them shafted.

I am not happy. I am thinking of just ordering them with DG's with no grips and then just having the C-Tapers installed after delivery.

Sorry its been a few day but some info for you! Due to the nice weather all the trackman have been busy since everyone and their mom are getting lessons so I have resorted to just playing a few holes every night. The biggest thing I want to stress is I don't care so much about the distance gain, I really want to talk about my bad swings and the fact I am still hitting greens with poor swings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think these have to be the most forgiving shaft I have played with due to even when you hit it kinda fat the ball still get's there. I play 4 holes the other night with my coach and he was dumb founded with the ball flight, trajectory and distance gain I got from just switching shafts!!! On one hole I had 185 to the pin and hit a 7 iron. As soon as I hit it I knew there was no chance we were both saying stay up, stay up and guess what? 10 feet!!! The look on his face was priceless and all he could say was I swear that ball had no chance!!! I want everyone to know yes you will most likely pick a few yards up but I promise you your shot dispersion will shrink!!!! And yes I played RIFLE 7.0 a long time ago, I think I still had a biggest big bertha in the bag too, They were great shafts in the day!!!!!
