Tour exotics CB4 DRIVER... Is it as good as it looks?

Metalhead

Recommended Posts

Sorry forgot to shoot a pic... I was drooling over the shape size and set up!!!!

Didn't hit either... But I'm sure someone has?! What's the story on this head... Does it play anything like it looks? Wow ! It looks like the old Tourstage ( which I can't remember the model name)

I just went into the local shop to get a grip... And wanted to see the CB4 FW due to the recent pics of it on golfwrx.. I tell you that looks awesome in person too... But then I spotted the CB4 driver... I consider myself well versed in golf clubs but honestly I had never knew of it's existence ... So guys tell me more!

I've hit it.

But before we go there, a little background. Thanks to Seattle's not-so-sunny winters, I stopped playing and practicing in November and went straight to the gym. Every day. Not content to do a limited "golf specific" workout, I just did a full 90-minute "bodybuilder" three-day split and probably put on a few pounds of muscle. (The "golf workout" portion consisted of 120 swings a day with a Power Swing Fan and some core/abs stuff.)

So in checking the Tour Edge website, I saw that nearby private club Aldarra was hosting a Tour Edge demo day just this past Saturday so I headed on up. (This is just hours after a full-blownn chest and biceps session.) Upon arrival I see that it wasn't just Tour Edge, but just about every major OEM. Only one problem: I haven't TOUCHED a club in exactly six months and even if I don't look like the Incredible Hulk, I sure feel like him.

But there are clubs to be hit so I start with a few Cleveland wedges, move to the Ping Anser Forged short irons, skipped Titlest and Nike, hit a few S3 Pro muscleback Cobras and finally made it to the far end of the range where Callaway was set up. Didn't have much luck with Cally's new muscleback or even their Razr X Forged but by this time my swing was finally coming around (sorta) and even though I had no interest in the club when the tech suggested trying the Diablo Forged I thought "why not?" Holy mackeral! According to the Trackman, this 6-iron went 10 yards longer than any other Cally iron for me. It's now on "the list."

But I knew I was there for a reason so after hitting a few horrible drives with the Adamas F11 and the metallic-feeling Adams "adjustable" 9032LS, I asked if the new Tour Edge CB4 driver was available and sure enough, I was handed what was FAR AND AWAY best-looking club at the demo. Compared to the other 460 monsters out there, this is a much more traditional head, compact but deep and clean. Despite being in "miles from golf shape," I hit a number of nice balls that had observers murmurring. While the face is said to be 2 degrees open and there was a significant left-to-right breeze, my solidly struck shots bored right through the breeze.

There was no launch monitor on which to measure specs but from just the looks and feel of the club and the RESULTS, I'm guaranteeing you this stick will be at the top of my "might buy at full retail" list.

(Along with the upcoming Callaway Octain Black Tour. ANOTHER driver to wonder about prior to its June 1 release.)

Happy golfing.

I hit a 10.5 Cb4 with a RiP sigma stiff. Maaaan I hate that shaft. It feels numb. BUT 2 out the ten swings I took were looong. The rest spun out or were too high. The head sounds like a carbon head -- that soft muted squish sound like the RAZR hawk TP. The head looks sub 460 with a nice shape, but like most or all TEE stuff the hosel lools like it's set too far back from the topline.

Just got one, took it out on the range today, then walked 9 holes with just the drivers and a pocket full of balls hitting against the G-15. 9*CB4 has Rip Alpha 80 not tipped and playing at 45, 9*G15 has Talamonti PD 80 tipped 3/4 and playing 44.5. I was also trying out balls, but since the sleeve of prov1s were #4s i hit 3 Prov1s with the CB4 and 3 B300s with the G15 off each tee. In the end i mixed the balls up because the G15s were all middle-left and the CB4s were mainly right side or right rough. First things first.... Man does the CB4 look good, at 440ccs and classic shape and all black head and shaft it looks the business at address. To my eye its one of the best looking clubs going and looks smaller than 440. It is 2* open but it looks square at address. It has a very deep face and reminds me a little of looking down at the TM Superdeep. Long and the short of it its not kicking the G15 out of the bag. Whether it is the open face angle or combo of that and the shaft, i really had to man up to get anything other than a power fade going. With my normal swing i was getting a pretty consistent 10-20 yard fade On the plus side its a mid launch low spin combo, not super forgiving but not quite as punishing as 905S or Superdeep. The longest straightest balls i hit were all with the G15. On average 15 yards longer than the CB4 and with a much more penetrating ball flight. Im going to try the PD 80 in it before it gets reserved for courses that set up with lots of right to left tee shots.

WOW! That is one DEEP face! I love the Superdeep and might give this a whirl, but I ran out of funds. Just posted a WTB and included this in the "interested in" list. Hopefully someone comes forward to offer this. I have the CB4 3 wood with a Talamonti and absolutely bombs the heck out of it!
