MacGregor MacTec NVG2 driver - yay or nay

Couple weeks ago, I took a stupid pill before a round and broke a shaft in my MacGregor V-Foil Eye-o-matic driver (yeah, I know... I'm not good enough to get upset after hitting 2 consecutive drives OB :cheesy: ). Anyway... I'm getting the driver reshafted with a cheap UST Competition shaft (the darn things is costing me more than what I paid for the driver couple months ago). While walking around the store, I noticed the regular NVG2s are being cleared out for $100. I tried hitting it into a net, and it feels nice, but the launch monitor at the store was broken so I couldn't really see any numbers. Has anyone hit both the Eye-o-matic and the MacTec? How do they compare? At $100, it seems like a no brainer.....

BTW, I'm looking at the NVG2 with the stiff quadra-action shaft.

Holy poop! For $100 I'll jump on that! I love, love, LOVE my 2005 MacTec. When my swing is anything near good the ball goes a ton, and straight. When I flush one, it goes farther than a person with my limited skills should be able to hit it!

 

And I hear the NVG2 is even better.

Well, that's probably a very good question :cheesy: I may have to go back and see which one it is - NVG or NVG2... I've got a feeling it's the former. If it IS the NVG, is it still a decent deal? Seems like you like yours a little bit :fool:

Well, that's probably a very good question :cheesy: I may have to go back and see which one it is - NVG or NVG2... I've got a feeling it's the former. If it IS the NVG, is it still a decent deal? Seems like you like yours a little bit :fool:

 

Yup, I still think it's a good deal. The only driver I'd get to replace my MacTec is the NVG2. I've tried the Callaway X460, the Fusion FT-3, the TM R7, and the Ping G5. All are excellent drivers, but the MacTec is better for me than all of those. I'm gonna get an NVG2 soon, when prices drop slightly.

 

Oh, and FYI, the hybrid 3 I just bought is pretty sweet too. Just be aware that even if you have a slower swing speed, you probably still want to get the stiff flex shaft. The regular is a bit whippy.

 

The ONLY thing I don't like about the new MacTec is the color! I love the deep blue head and shaft of my 'Tec, and the the headcover is super cool!

Best driver I have ever hit and I have hit alot of drivers FT3, X460, TM R7 460, just to name a few of the most recent.

For my game this is the best one I have hit, most forgiving.

I absolutely love this driver and all my friends when they hit it want it.

The only one of the listed that was close is the TM R7.

^^I'm definitely getting the NVG2 soon. If it's even better than my current MacTec, I'll be playing better almost immediately. As long as I don't swing out of my shoes and try to kill the ball, the MacTec is my best friend.

 

I liked the r7 but I found that it was the one driver I was fighting a slice with. The FT-3 was the closest driver to the MacTec for me, but at $100 more, I found the NVG2 to be slightly better for my swing and a much better value for my money.

got to say nay. after a 4 month stint i recently traded my nvg2 in on a close out r7 with ys-6. just could never get a handle on the mac and found myself trying to change my swing to get the results i wanted. when it was all on i got great results - straight and long! - but if my timing was off look out. most misses went right, way right, with a couple dead pulls. got so i just couldnt hit the tihing with any confidence. to me the stiff stock shaft always felt too stiff (tried the regular but didnt like the 50g weight) and the head was too light giving me problems closing the face.

 

love the r7, though. dont have to manipulate my swing just give it a rip. i like the smaller head and weight.

One more thing about the original MacTec is that the grip is pretty thin. It actually seems a bit smaller than standard. I just regripped with a really nice blue-and-black Winn grip in the midsize, and I hit the MacTec even better at the range last night. I was talking to the guys at Golf Galaxy, they regripped in like 3 minutes, and they all said that if you're a rewards member and you buy a new driver, they'll put a custom grip on for free. Pretty sweet.
