Ping AWT Stiff shaft vs X100 Soft Stepped???

Need shaft help please
Hey guys, need some shaft advice. I'm not the most knowledgeable equipment guy but learning as i go.

I tried out the mizuno shaft optimizer thing as i hit my irons so high i think i am losing some distance, so i was curious what the shaft thing would tell me.

How big a difference is there between a Ping AWT Stiff and a X100 Soft Stepped? Would i see any benefits from switching? It also recommended project X 6.0 and KBS X flex soft stepped. Dont know much about either of those. Used to play S300 and i didnt hit those as high as the AWT.

My Irons are Ping G10. I know they are supposed to go high by design but i feel they go too high and would like to bring it down some. Feel like im losing too many yards. 165 is my 6 iron yardage with my G10's.

Here are the Mizuno shaft optimizer results if that helps any:

Swing Speed: 90
Tempo 5
Shaft Toe Down 4
Shaft Kick Angle 6
Release Factor 4

More stats about me....8 Handicap. 108 avg driver speed. Ive always used stiff shafts but i bought a used g15 4 Wood with a serrano X-flex 75 gram shaft and ive never hit a fairway wood so straight and so well in my life. Has me questioning my shaft selections. Based on those mizuno numbers i guess i get a lot of forward shaft lean on my down swing. I guess that increases loft at contact but not sure.

Rather than reshaft they g10's i will probably just get a spend a tad more and take advantage of the g15 price drop. Unless any of you suggest otherwise.

Thanks a ton. If i need to give more info about me or my game, let me know.

X100 is going to feel WAAAY heavier than the AWT shafts.

I have played both (in different heads) but if you are looking for a MUCH lower trajectory in all your clubs, the X100 is a great way to go.

If you are looking for a higher (at least for me) trajectory through the bag, the AWT's are a solid shaft.

The AWT's didn't feel "whippy" to me, but they certainly created a higher trajectory than X100s, or S300\s, or Project X Flighteds.

My driver SS is about 105-ish...for reference.

I have just slightly higher swing speed numbers (~110-112 driver) and just recently went from Ping AWT S to KBS Tour X. I did the Mizuno shaft optimizer and it also recommended KBS X (soft stepped) and X100 (soft stepped).

I found the AWT to be much too high launching, and any wind caused problems for my shots. Part of the problem was likely also the G10 heads.

I purchased a set of used Mizuno MX-300s with KBS Tour X and am glad I did. I did not go with the soft step, as it would only raise the flight and I am happy with them as they are. The KBS Tour shafts still give you a good mid-high trajectory, but they don't balloon like the AWT and you can keep them down if needed. Also, my misses are now much tighter.

If you aren't a super high ball hitter, you might find the KBS Tour to be a good mid-point between AWT and X100, which truly are different ends of the trajectory spectrum.

** Note - That 165 yd 6 iron distance seems a little low for a 90 MPH swing speed.

AWT reminds me of the old Rifle Flighted shaft, if you remember how those played. a lighter weight, flighted type shaft, whereas X100 is not flighted. X100 is quite a bit heavier, so it would definitely be lower launching

I agree. My 6iron ss is around 82-83 and my 6iron is 165-170. OP you should get a significant distance increase by being properly fit. Since you're hitting the ball high I'd stay away from KBS altogether unless you want to look at the new C-taper. I really prefer the ballflight of PX to the DG's and ballspeed was higher with PX as well.

AWT and DGX are at the opposite ends of the spectrum. AWT is very light and high launch. DGX is very heavy and low launch. DGX will play significantly stiffer than AWT even if soft stepped 2 x.

I played AWTX in the G15 long irons I used to have(3-6), and have played 2 sets with X100(S57-current gamer, S58) Driver SS is somewhere between 107-112 depending on the quality of my release, but iron play is the strength of my game

I used to own G10 irons as well but they had CS lite stiff, and were not for me. You will appreciate what X100 will do for your launch especially in windy conditions. The only thing you're giving up with AWT is the yardage on thin shots. For some reason with the G15 long irons I used to play I could hit a ball scary-low on the face and still get my yardage out of it.

The X flex version of AWT will give you decent flight through the bag and make it easier to hit a draw. X100 will feel heavier

The biggest issue will be getting used to the release of the club when going from S to X

Give some things a try - I know the Ping cart (as well as many other fitting carts) have many different shaft/flex options, so you will be a-OK!

OK follow up question for you guys...

The way i see it, i will either just buy a new set, or reshaft my g10's. Sending them to ping for a reshaft is not an option, as it's just too much money...i'd rather just spend a little more for some new irons. So my question is ....is the cheapest way to look for some pull outs on ebay? What should i be looking for.... i need 3-PW and UW X100 soft stepped + 1/2". I figure something would pop up on ebay that i could work with and then pay someone to have them installed at a much cheaper price. Any advice?

Since soft stepping is putting a 3 iron shaft on 4 iron, 4 on a 5, and so on. I guess i just need to look for a 3 - PW x100 pulls and that would take care of the additional length needed? My 3 iron is in the closet anyway in favor of a hybrid, so i dont even need to reshaft that one. Am i on the right track? Thx

Oh and also does anyone know the tip size for G10 irons off hand? Should i only look for Ping Pulls, or is it ok to put taylormade pulls on a ping or other manufacturers?
You need .355 taper. If you buy pulls from another brand, they can end up being a bit shorter or longer.

I went trought the Mizuno fitting last week and my numbers were; Speed 90, tempo 5, toe down 4, kick 6, release 6, resulting as the same shafts recommandation as you. X100 will be here next week.I just bought a set of G15 with AWT stiff shafts and tried them for the first time this morning at the range. There was some wind and when you hit it flush it goes high and the wind kills it, big loss of distance. The shafts feels good but not in the 4 and 5 irons, they seem whippy, but the 6 and higher are OK, just too high of a flight.
This confirms I will have to re-shaft.

Let me know how it turns out for you!
I'm a little worried about the weight of the X100's, but when at the Mizuno fitting it felt perfect for the 6 iron, good trajectory, 185y on the monitor.
