What to do in this situation?

Recommended Posts

telling you to hurry when addressing ball
So I have a playing partner who tells me to hurry like right when I stand up to my shot or right before I address it. Let me give you a little background on this player, he tops about every shot and cant get the ball in the air, shoots in the 100's.

Sometimes when there are other groups on the course, right before I address my shot or when Im actually standing over the shot, he will say "hurry up". Now Im not a slow player by any means, I grab my club, take a practice swing, step back behind the shot finding line and address the ball then hit, prolly 15 seconds total. Everytime he does this crap, it messes up my shot. Yesterday I smoked a drive about 300 on left side of fairway, he proceeds to top about 3 shots to reach mine walking up to the ball everytime and just trying to hit it. Its the third hole and my game is starting to get good. I get up to my long drive and he tells me to hurry and grab my club and hit we got people on the tee. So I do and it throws me off a little. Now we are on the green and I have a long putt, I address the ball and as Im lining up my putter head with the line, he says "hurry up", totally messes me up and I hit the ball about halfway there.

What do I do in this situation as Im not a slow player at all but this is really starting to bother me cause it messes up my shot.

The way I see it, you have two options:

A) say something to him about it.

or

B) don't play with him anymore.

although I do play with someone who has the same preshot routine as you and it's mildly irritating to watch someone address the ball, take practice swings, then back off, check the line from behind, then address the ball again before hitting. It doesn't bother me when someone checks the line first, then addresses the ball. I have no idea why, but doing it out of order irks me somewhat.

yea but Im not slow by anymeans. I dont address the ball, I just take one practice swing by it, then look down the line and address then hit. When Im putting though I dont do this. I just address the ball and find my line from there, it works for me.

What kind of question is this? Tell him to shut the f*** up. Especially if he plays slower than you because he tops it all the time. I'm kind of shocked that you need someone else's opinion on this. Nut up a little and tell him whats up the next time he says it.

+100. He'll either shut up or he won't play with you anymore. Either way, problem solved.

lol, good advice. The guy is my dad tho so that makes it a little harder to tell him to shut up. Il say something next time tho. Maybe Il just step away from the ball if he does it and say " you cant do that"

On the bright side, he'll still love you unconditionally, regardless of what you say to him!

If you're really averse to saying something because he's your dad (I can understand that), you can probably be even subtler than that. Every time he does it, just make a very visible show of having your concentration broken, reset and take more time, and play the shot. He'll pretty quickly get the idea that telling you to hurry actually makes you take longer to play. In the meantime, maybe it'll save those shots when he is telling you to hurry.

We're really all just rats hitting the feeder bar to get the pellets, when you get down to it.

I'd tell him the same thing on every shot to see how he likes it(in his back swing).Golf is supposed to be enjoyed-NOT rushed.

Anything else that might be of importance that we might need to know about??? Got a big inheritance coming? Still living with him? Is he paying for your rounds?

Family dynamic is often a wildcard in these types of situations.   You know your relationship and how your father reacts so that can completely skew how you should respond.

If it were my dad (which I would never see him doing that to me), it's simple...after your next round or even the first time he does it during the next round...say, "Dad, I love playing golf with you, but I absolutely cannot stand that you tell me to 'hurry-up' before every shot.   I'm fully aware of our playing position and honestly, my shots are not the ones holding us up.   As much as I like playing golf with you, I don't appreciate you telling me to 'hurry-up' before every shot.   I'm not sure if I'll continue to play golf with you if it doesn't stop."

Stay silent and see what he says.   If he plays it off or makes excuses...stop playing golf with him for a while to make your point.   If he understands and gets the message, then hopefully, you will have achieved your goal.

You're totally within your rights to stand up for yourself here. I might suggest bringing this up for discussion away from the course. This will give you all the time you need to really hash everything out and get on the same page with your dad, without the added pressure of groups coming up on you, other people around, you feeling frustrated and annoyed in the moment, etc.

We have a big group that plays on Saterdays , and they paired this guy with us that is just like the guy you described. He told me to hurry up 3 times and not slow play him. Well I was over the ball and he opened his mouth , I turned and hit the ball right at him. He never opend his mouth again!!!!

Lighten up Francis. You went from solving the problem with a few polite comments to zinging golf balls at people. Vast difference there.
