Recommendation for Private Club in Houston to check out.

Myself and two buddies are looking to join a private club in Houston, or even the surrounding area (Conroe, ect), I live in Kingwood, they in Spring branch, location not important as we can drive up to 40 miles, I was a member at KW for several years, just looking to do something different, been playing just about every public course in the area for the last year or so and ready to join somewhere that has a great course along with the social activities private clubs offer (pool, fitness, ect not important though).

Have looked at Walden (Lake Houston), considering Canongate, but want to check out others, would of already joined Cypresswood (or even Oakhurst) if it was just about the golf.

Any one have a club they'd recommend checking out? Figured there are several I do not even know about around, location really isn't a biggie, seriously, for any of us, we've been driving to Montgomery, Sealy, Mt Belview, ect the last year.

I've played them all, and IMO the best club BY FAR is Carlton Woods.

Redstone is a good deal, as you have access to the Houstonian and Redstone Tournament Course in addition to the Redstone Member's Course (and for a premium you can also have access to Shadowhawk which is an excellent course)......but none of them can compete with the two outstanding courses and facilities at Carlton Woods.

Champions Club. Some of the best players in the State and a world class course. It does have a handicap requirement and you will need a recommendation from a current member. Last time I played there I was told that the club has over 400 members with single digit handicaps and of those over 150 are -5 or less. I can believe it. Those folks are serious golfers but very friendly.

Carlton Woods is incredible. Some others that I think are nice are Lakeside, Royal Oaks, Shadowhawk, and Redstone. Haven't played Champions but I've heard nothing but good things.

Thx guys for all the info, helps a bunch, I've heard nothing but great things about Carlton Woods, golf, facilities, service ect is amazing, but may be a somewhat higher financial comitment than we are looking at, Redstone is definately on my list to check out, for Champions, as a group (mine hovers around a 12, other is a 15 but dropping quick, but other doesn't break 90 normally) we do not have the hcdps.
Raveneaux is now on the top of my list, had a guy we played with today tell us they have very competitive priced m/ships right now, I'm very interested, love the course, the lay out, and country club, been atleast 3 years since I've played there, but I hear they've got the course in pretty good condition.
I'll check definately check out Lakeside, Royal Oaks, Shadowhawk, and Willow Creek as well (never played any of them), Northgate I've checked out and actually played quite a bit in the last few years, I like it alot to, and they are definately in my price range, great course as well, I may come back to it but for some reason would rather do Raveneaux if that works out.

personally, going to Raveneaux is a step backwards if u are/were a memeber at King Wood.....

but all this depneds on how far you want to drive too from where you live.

IF Carlton Woods is out of your price range, i would recommend The Woodlands Country Club. The Woodlands Country Club is the flagship membership of Cannongate and you get access to the the Oaks & Panther Trail course at the Woodlands Resort/Conference Center. When you join the woodlands country club you get the old TPC of the Woodlands, Palmer Course (27 holes) and the Player course. The player course is by far the hardest of the 3 and much harder than the Oaks & Panther Trail.

Not to mention, u get access to some other courses around Houston....Lake Windcrest, South Shore Harbour & Magnolia Creek. And if you ever travel to Atlanta, you access to a lot of courses there.

My dad has a senior membership at the woodlands and paid and initiation less than $10K and has monthly dues less than $350....and every course has practice faciltiies.

to me, the woodlands has a lot of VALUE... but is def not carlton woods

my dad joined as a Senior....and paid $7K for initiation. A senior membership is much less initiation but if this guy was member at King Wood, that cant be too cheap either. Also, a senior membership CANT get a tee time for Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. They reserve those times for the younger members who are working. But i know my dad gets out whenver he wants as long as it is not packed

I dont know how old this person is who started the thread.

I'm in my mid 40's, one buddy is the same and other one is 30 ish, yea, I joined KW when the intitiation fee was I think $1,000 (got the Forest, Lakes, Island, and Marsh, (even Atascocita at one point) but not Deerwood), it was 2006 when I joined, cancelled in 09 when I moved in with a gf across town.
As you know its not all about the $, and you get what you pay for, but we we're probably looking for something with the inititation under 10K, that could be bumped up of course to find what we want, alot of clubs are offering -0- inititation currently, of course we'd definately take advantage of that if we found what we wanted, another buddy is a member of Cannongate and said they were offering the 0 int. fee, but I do not believe that includes the "quote from utkochster- When you join the woodlands country club you get the old TPC of the Woodlands, Palmer Course (27 holes) and the Player course" end quote, but does all the others (Oak, Panther, Lake Windcrest, South Shore Harbour & Magnolia Creek) from what I understand.
I hate to hear that about Raveneaux, I'm going there to check it out anyway tomorrow, may be right up our alley, course is pretty nice, club is big and nice, I heard they've lost some members in the last several years, new mgmt, ect., but unless their course is in bad condition I'm going to be looking at that pretty hard, is there something I do not know??

edit- I reread your post about Woodlands CC being the flagship m/ship of Canongate, I understand the difference between m/ships now, I'm going to check both out, looks like the Woodlands CC could be a great deal, that is alot of nice courses to play for the $ (I like that).

The initiation for just Cannongate and not the "The Woodlands" is around $600 and you get access to the other clubs mentioned above besides Palmer, Player & TPC courses. Those are only for Woodlands member. There are different monthly dues based on what you want. I think the cheapest is like $160/month but then you have to pay like $10 everytime you play. Also, you CANT use pull/push caarts on Cannongate Oaks & Panther Trails courses. So it is either walk (which can be long) or ride for like $15/round.

im a mooch off my dad and pay half price green fees as a family member...so i dont need a membership. Cheaper for me considering I am out of the country 6 weeks every 2 months.

Raveneaux has seemed to get its act together, you should like the conditions

Yes sir I did, I played it last Sat. and really enjoyed it, I think my expectations were a hair higher but I enjoyed the course, its tough to judge a course (thank goodness for the rain we received yesterday) in this drought we are having though. Nice club, real nice staff, decent course, would definately be my top runner if it were closer, even though I was thinking that distant doesn't matter, it kinda does, took me 40 minutes on a Sat. morning taking 1960 from KW (couldn't of done 1960 during traffic of course), so you have to figure a good hour average one way drive time, may be a tad too far, but I'm still considering it.

if he was considering redstone golf club, then the woodlands country club should also be in his budget.

i would say the best value is the woodlands country club. membership there gives you access to 8 total courses: the tournament course, the player course, the palmer course, the oaks, panther trail, lake windcrest, magnolia creek, and south shore harbour.
