Trevino's clubs

My all time favorite Trevino quote:

"I know people in Dallas. Trust me. Oswald didn't act alone."

Trouble is nobody gives a $hit anymore.

They should.

Harbinger of things to come

Yes, you're right.....they should. But they don't.

No one cares that we had a coup d'état in America on 11/22/63.

They're more interested in who's going to be on the next edition of Dancing With the Stars.

According to the Guy Yocum interview, Trevino got a custom set of irons from a gentleman named "Sandy" in Australia.

A Wrxer in another thread even knew "Sandy" and his full name, and these might have been the forerunner of the Dunlop Australian Blade irons.

Does anyone have any photos of Trevinos "Sandy" iron set, which he got in Australia, and used so effectively in his career?

That was until Trevino decided to drill out some weight in them, and according to the interview, still rues that decision.

Apparently Trevino just helped Jack with his game recently, so....

Third greatest ball striker in history.

Hogan

Jack

Trevino

Definitely a topic worthy of it's own debate, but I like the top 3 here. I had to go to the stats w/ a buddy of mine to show how good Jack was tee-to-green, and the data is only available from 1980 on...

I remember reading the story of Lee helping out Jack, Jack had the ball in his stance where he played it in his prime and kept hitting worm burners. Lee had him move it a few inches forward and Jack started stripping it again. A 76 year old man doesn't strike it like a 36 year old!

Has anyone posted the story about the first time Raymond Floyd first played Trevino in a gambler's money game? Excellent.

How nostalgic. I miss the days of playing around with different amounts of lead tape on different clubs. Real men had lead tape everywhere. I still have some on putters and a couple of wedges. I think I'll go get a roll and improve my ball striking... 🙂 I'll even put some on my coffee cup.

LOL I’ve got lead tape on my driver, my 2 hybrid, a handful of my irons and 2 wedges. I’ll have to go into my office and check but I might have some on the 3 wood (it’s not in the bag now). Oddly enough the putter is the only club type that’s been able to avoid my lead tapiness tendencies.

A bag of left-handed junk.

Got a golf bud I call " lead tape Louie " brand new clubs with lead tape all over  the place.

Switching over to graphite shafts couple years ago I had lead tape under the grip, down the shaft, back of the iron head etc. never got the "feel" right.

Went to heavier shafts, no more lead tape. But i keep a roll around JIC.

Obviously we need a dedicated section on GolfWRX to trade the secrets and infinitesimal details on what tape, where, how and why, including formulas to measure intended effect and testing.

In no time a tall, YouTube gurus will be uploading all kinds of content on the hidden world of lead tape.

I like to consider myself a big hitter when it comes to historical use of lead tape.

Welding though? That's hardcore. Turning up at the course with your caked-in-lead-tape Mizunos and seeing a bagful of clubs that all look like that... whatever it is/was next to yours on the first tee must have been like turning up at the gym only to find yourself warming up next to Jón Páll Sigmarsson.

Several years ago I played a round at the Talofofo Golf Club in Guam. There was a set of clubs on display in a case reputed to be the clubs Trevino used in the '69 Ryder Cup. I don't remember anything about the brand but I do remember a lot of lead tape and that they looked like something you might find in a second hand store.

Great player ans personality.

I've got an old Titleist Howitzer 12° driver with proprietary graphite shaft that's still perfectly playable today if it's regripped.

The fairway woods that I used with them--which is what I'm talking about here-- were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding.

They were in 16, 21, and 25° lofts... plus---although I didn't bag it often, a 29° 9-wood!

These fairway metals look pretty scuffed up now, but they're really good golf clubs.

They have weird shafts with a .400" tip that were made by the fishing rod company Fenwick.  I said weird, right?    (No, they're not fishing rod flexible.)

If one broke, it couldn't be replaced, and as good as these clubs were, the last of them were sold at Sam's Club for $25 each.

Anyway, Lee Trevino endorsed these clubs, and actually had significant input into their design. And they're good clubs.

I could re-grip them, take them out, and play them right now--but for now, with my other old clubs, they're part of my finished basement decor.

Interesting.  I didn't think that they even offered shaft options back then.

All I remember were those steel ZZ Lites which only came in stiff flex.

Seniors, women, and juniors were hitting stiff shafts.

I think Fenwick has gone back to strictly fishing, but there's nothing wrong with the shafts on those fairway woods that I mentioned.

Other than not being replaceable due to their weird tip diameter.

Trying to think of who on current tour is most like Trevino in personality and wins.  Maybe Phil?

 Phil ???

Trevino was cool and fun, a dirt poor guy that made good-- Phil not so much-everything about Phil seems contrived , snobby and entitled ( from insider trading to college buy in )
