The Golden Ram blades he used were a gift from his friend Cesar Sanudo, a great player from Mexico. At one time, his SW was a Ben Hogan Special SI, like the one I still have.

From time to time he used a Power-Bilt persimmon driver. Lee's 8802 style putter was about 5* flatter than normal.

Wrap leather grips were his preference.

In his prime years, his driver was a MacGregor / Toney Penna EOM 60 with an aluminum pin in the insert surrounded by four screws.
That's exactly what he played. Beat me to the punch.
Leather grips, too, I believe.

I was working at a golf shop in Fort Worth that was well known for club work/repair, and one day in about 2001 or 2002 we got a call from the tour department at Ben Hogan which wasn't too far away. They were building a set of irons for Trevino with leather grips, and they didn't have enough underlistings. We had some, so they came and got them, but they mentioned that it would probably be the last time they would be able to use leather. I don't know if they built him anymore sets out of that shop before it was moved or not.

Is it true he tested Hogan irons when Ben was too old to do it himself?

IIRC, 8802 or Anser, Wilson R-90 Sand Wedge and a mix of Hogan Apexes and Ram Tour Grinds for irons. I don't know about woods.

He definitely used an 8802 style for a while and there is the famous picture of him kissing the Ping putter, but I don't think it stayed in the bag long. I also remember him talking about using a 6-wood on occasion, which would probably be equivalent to about 25 degrees loft in the persimmon era. I would be curious if anyone had any pics or more detail.

Lee Trevino gamed an 8813 during the late 60s and into the early 70s.

His fabled Ping putter, flattened by whacking it onto the floor of a hotel room, was also an A-Blade, I believe.

Trying to think of who on current tour is most like Trevino in personality and wins.  Maybe Phil?

Always thought Vijay seemed to be in the same fabric as Lee. Both two of my all time favorites. Unique swings, made them on their own,  both had immense success in their own time, VJ as 40+ and Lee had second career destroying the seniors, both are quirky about their clubs, Vijay hit small coconuts around Fiji course, Lee hit balls while working at the range, Lee bought the property where the range was and built his house on it iirc, VJ scrapped around the globe to play, Lee supplemented self with money games, honed his game on an Island while in the armed services, both had some financial bumps early on, first major in their 30's.....and both swings I could watch on an endless loop.....one extrovert and one introvert, although rumor is that Lee was quite introverted on tour when not in front of camera......none of this was researched, so I am sure I am off on some points....

Driver: Wilson Whale

3 wd: Nickent 4DX

5 wd: Adams Faldo Series

.........seems he could play with almost any clubs.....just goes to show how good an "injun" he was!!!

.......any arrow would do!!!
I can't find any references to Lee Trevino calling himself that. Lee was of Mexican decent, not Native American. That term in quotations is considered racially offensive, FYI.
When a golfer has a tendency to blame his club for a bad shot, he inevitably will be told, "it's the Indian, not the arrow."
Indian = the golfer
Arrow = the club
Get it now????

As Andy Dufresne said to Warden Norton, "How can you be so obtuse?"

Well then say Indian not “injun”. That’s the point.

Yes, but calling an Indian person "injun" is about like calling a white person a "crackah".

Not exactly polite.

Cracker is my favorite adjective for American sothern folk. Sounds so much better than red neck. Good ol boy gets an honorable mention.

Do you know what cracker refers to? FYI it’s not saltines

I watched a bit of vintage Trevino the other day in some pro/celeb events and it amazes me how he could just flat out play.   He was crushing this persimmon off the tee and stripping the paint off flag sticks with low bullet irons with wind conditions that would derail most rounds.  His clubs looked like they came from a charity shop.
