Fowler is ranked 150th in driving accuracy and 165th in scrambling. He just hasn't played well this year.
supposedly, the driver he used last year cracked early on this year and he hasnt replaced it yet with something he is happy with. quite surprised at the scrambling stat.

jason day legitimately contended at augusta but despite a 2nd place finish at congressional IMO its a stretch to say he contended. he started the final round 9 back and finished 8 back, he didnt contend for the win.

ok, watney was ranked at 15 before he won today and that is now his 4th win which includes a WGC. not sure quoting the world rankings is a definitive way to prove a player is better another player.
Watney has contended in a lot of tournaments and he won the wgc Cadillac this year. No one talks about him unless he is near 1st. But they never talk about him when he's 15th or 20. Watney can beat mostly anyone. Just my opinion.

I remember when we used to ask the same question about Tom Watson and David Duval. Both marked as men who couldn't win and chokers. Hopefully once Rickie wins one he will just keep on winning...

I think Watson and especially Duval had much better swings than Fowler.

I think Day/Fowler/McIlroy is a fair comparison across the board. They are all relatively the same age. You can't hold it against Day and McIlroy that they are better than Fowler and were able to turn pro earlier. If Fowler was good enough to turn pro in 2007, he would have.
This made me think, you don't see American golfers turning pro while still in high school nearly as much as you do the Europeans. I don't know if it is because there just aren't as many ready to compete at that level or just a different way of thinking. Most of the highly talented American's go to college for at least one year, even Tiger did.

Good point, Duval couldn't win for the longest time, once he did the floodgates opened. Of course then it all disappeared almost as quickly....golf is a funny game.
As I recall though, Duval really became a ball striking machine. He drove the ball better than anyone. When he lost the driver, his game fell apart.

Rickie has a lot going on in his swing. Miniature version of Mickelson, and not as talented. Good player, but I don't see him being great and will be surprised if he ever wins a major unless he tightens up that swing.

Rickie can't get it done? Sort of a good problem.

He's learning. One time soon he will back into one, or just be on and win one outright.

Faldo says Rickie's "handsy" swing is more prone to be off just enough to produce a mediocre or bad round.

Problems usually come in the final round for "the orange one" so looks like Sir Nick is right, as usual.

Funny part was the telecast didn't talk much about this. Almost like they did not want to say anything bad about the poorly clad kid. And they did not show much of him after he went to a couple shots off the lead.

The American media is in love with this kid.

I agree with the posters above who essentially said that if Fowler keeps putting himself in the position to be win on Sunday he'll get more comfortable and eventually win.

The kid is so young and does have a ton of talent. Just needs to keep working hard and he'll have a very good career. Maybe not a top 5-10 player but then again not too many guys are, yet still go on to have multiple wins.

They same thing happened to McIlroy at the Masters. After a couple bogey's and the kid drops out of contention they stopped showing him. Didn't see really any of McIlroy after he dropped those shots. Does that mean the American media is in love with him too?

I think it's just common to not show the guys who aren't in contention. If Overton wasn't making a run they wouldn't have been showing any of his shots. Who was Overton playing with? I'm not sure they showed the other 2 from his group at all, because they weren't in contention.

A very quick and complicated swing, plus sometimes he does not recognize that a bogey is a good score. In five years this would be a more pertinent topic, he is young and has some learning to do. In his favor, he made no excuses, just said he couldn't make anything happen.
Agree 100%. I'm not necessarily a Fowler fan, but I think he will win in due time. Just needs a little more maturity.

But Rickie didn't leave the PGA tour for the European tour when times got tough... *rimshot*

But surely Rickie is American? I don't quite understand the logic of your post. Although I understand the sentiment. I think you may be in the denial phase.

Yeah I thought Doubletaps wordsmithing painted a pretty good mental picture.

But to be honest I dont want to be dissing on any athlete in their early 20s, I just get a touch concerned seeing vids re off the course, MX bikes, cars, jet skis etc In comparo we see Rorys "backyard" simulating bunker, green and rough conditions from around the world

If you look at some of the post AT&T articles on the pgatour website they highlight how poor Rickie's scoring is in round 4. I think this poor stat, and ultimately no wins, is to do with how aggressive he is. He just needs to learn to shoot away from the sunday pins a little more and not go at everything. His putting is not funky like his swing so rely on that a little more.

He'll learn this eventually and close the deal at some point.

Reminds me of the Q-school book.

The author says (I'm paraphrasing) most people at Q-school have swings good enought to be on tour. But the difference with the PGA tour pro is he can control it (and putting) under pressure.

If he is good enough to be there on Sunday at this age, I think he'll be fine and win some tournaments.

I think a better question should be "why doesn't someone like Jeff Overton win?" He has all the tools, is in contention a lot, quite frankly he has more game than Fowler, Fowler just has the looks, endorsements and teenagers following him, that's why people wonder what is wrong with him. The kid has talent, and a quirky swing, he may figure it out but there has been a lot of undeserved hype surrounding him that quite frankly has not been earned yet, which is probably what is causing the pressure for him to win...which he has not been able to overcome yet.

Oh well, he is wealthy, set for life financially, can't say I would turn down the money if I were him, but when your career is over and you look back winning and winning majors are what people remember, of course he is young so he has plenty of time.
Hogan award winner his freshman year at the top golf program in the country. Made it to the Tour through Q School, won Rookie of the Year Honors and kept the chance at a Ryder Cup alive from his play on the last 4 holes of his match. All completed while most of his peers just got their diploma. How about we keep it in perspective here.
