Now that I have matching sets I use my "backups" for testing new things. For example, I'm looking pretty hard at the C-Tapers at the moment and will reshaft a few of my "backups" for testing. Otherwise I'll use them for practice around the house, to swap out when I'm regripping and stuff like that.

I'm thinking about a back up set right now because in the Bay Area condition can vary from being very soggy to very firm. I'm considering getting some thicker soled irons for soggy conditions.

Used clubs are so cheap these days, why not have backups? You can buy used 2007 Burner drivers for $50, used irons of incredible variety and quality for under $200. Used hybrids are a dime a dozen. Etc., etc. Things happen, clubs break, clubs get reshafted, you have a vacation home, you keep clubs at a golf club and want another set around for a round somewhere else or the range. You don't want to overuse your primary wedges, so you practice with backups. Just some of the reasons I suppose.

I have several backups of every club. I have a few sets of irons, somewhat for fun, and somewhat for practical reasons. My first string irons are Mizuno MX-200's, forged irons, so I am conscious of unnecessary wear on them. The other day, I was going out for a round to a public course in what was expected to be light to driving rains, so I decided not to take my MX-200's out due to the not-so-great-course and crappy weather. I ended up taking out a backup set of Mizuno MX-23's instead, and didn't have to worry about my primary irons. Or I could have taken out my Callaway X-22's, which are great irons as well and more durable. That said, it's just fun trying out different clubs sometimes, and so having backups flows from that for me.

Because you need SOMETHING to buy. What happens when you find a driver you're happy with? THEN what are you supposed to buy??

My backups (X-14s, as opposed to Pro Series X-14s which are my gamers) servce mainly as a 'travel' set. They play similarly enough that there isn't an adjustment, and I don't have to worry AS much about my gamers being messed up due to handling. The secondary purposed is to let people borrow if they need a set. Every now and again we get a quick visit from my parents (or my in-laws) and they don't bring clubs with them but still want to play. No way someone else is getting remotely close to my gamers!

calling them a "backup" set is simply a justification to yourself to own more golf stuff

Not so. I have a set I keep at work just in case opportunity knocks. ( I Iive 30 mins from work). Also, they are the 'traveling team'. I'm never going to trust some airline with the 'A' team. Geez, if they 'loose' tour pro's bags how safe is mine? Not chancing it. If I want new clubs I get them, that's another story. There is a backup set for good reasons.

1.cuz its fun to tinker
2.if your gamers misbehave and need some time off, your backups are there to cheer you up
3.again, its fun to tinker
4.you get to own more golf stuff
5.again, why are you complaining about more golf stuff?

On a more serious note, I think backup sets are good when I lose confidence in my main set. Its a mental thing.

All of this.

And... what else are you going to put in your back up bags?

Will someone please ban the OP for asking this question of a bunch of club hos? :cheesy: I kid, of course.

Ho'ing is a disease and the only known remedy is buying more clubs. ;) You can't effectively ho if you don't have at least one backup set. All the buying and selling, time in transit, etc requires that you have a backup set so you can still get to the range and/or course.

I'm obsessed with obtaining backups of my bag so in case any part of my bag was lost or stolen, I could replace it easily. I have almost an exact duplicate of almost every club in my bag. Just in case :)

As well its nice to have different backups that are trying to make into the main rotation. Thats my motive anyway.

My backup set is an old set I played with years ago, a set of Ping Eye 2's. I play them once every couple of months just for the heck of it. But I really don't need an extra set.

My senior bag.......
