Going to Dallas in a couple of weeks and need info on where to play. Old American Golf club is one spot I have in mind.
Hope you're from AZ or somewhere hot, cuz it's blazing here this year.

Old American is very nice, very tough course (at least first couple of rounds). Very over priced for the zero amenities, but pure golf.

The Tribute (like a Tour 18 of Links golf) is on same property and very fun.

Tour 18 Dallas in Flower Mound in nice as well

Tierra Verde in Arlington is one of top Munis in the US.

Links at Waterchase is well conditioned and very tough, some Pros play practice rounds there prior to HP/Byron Nelson and Colonial.

Bridlewood is a nice layout, with bent grass greens, hard to say how they're holding up to this inferno of a summer.

Have fun, there's tons of nice tracks down here.

Old American and Tribute makes for a great 36 holes of golf. Play the Tribute in the afternoon and enjoy a pint or two in their pub afterwards.
Tour 18 is another fun one to play if you've never played a replica course before.
Cowboys Golf Club is too expensive...but all you can eat and drink (excl alcohol) means you can get pretty good value if you're willing to play 36 holes.
Many people forget about Sky Creek Ranch in Keller. Designed by RTJ Jr, it's typically in very good shape and shows off the elevation changes that many people aren't aware of in Tarrant County.
Tierra Verde and Texas Star are also both work a look. These are two of the better city-owned courses that you'll ever play. Very well taken care of, make sure you keep an eye out for the environmental hazard areas because they will swallow up a seemingly good shot and you're adding on an unexpected penalty stroke to your card.
For value (sub $50 rounds)
Grapevine - designed by Byron Nelson, this is easily the best value in DFW. It runs up against Cowboys Golf Club and Lake Grapevine. Call early to get a tee time as they fill up every Saturday morning (if you get before 10AM...be excited).
Bear Creek - There are 2 courses on the south part of the DFW Airport complex that people don't know are there. After having their greens die on them in 2008/09, they've done a very good job of improving course conditions and it's actually a facility that I enjoy visiting. I prefer the west course but don't play Bear Creek if you aren't confident off the tee and with your irons. Most holes are tree lined and there isn't a lot of room for error. Check out Golf Now or the Bear Creek website for good discounts.
for BBQ (because this is my real passion)

The best BBQ in Dallas proper is either Pecan Lodge at the Dallas Farmer's Market or Dallas Lockhart BBQ in the Bishop Arts District. Avoid Sonny Bryan's, Dickey's, and Spring Creek like the plague. Your stomach deserves better. A savvy person might mention Meshack's in Garland. Travis was turning out a fabulous brisket about 2 years ago but IMO the press and public recognition has gone to his head and the quality of their food has really dropped. For as difficult as it is to get to his location, it's no longer worth the trip for me.
The best BBQ in the mid-cities (area between Dallas and Ft Worth) is either North Main in Euless (go for the ribs & pulled pork, skip the rest of it) or Bartley's in Grapevine (ribs are good, brisket is stellar, don't miss their home cut french fries either). Bartley's also does a great job with their cobblers. The pecan cobbler is my favorite but it's not regularly available. PLEASE avoid Hard 8 BBQ in Coppell. It's a tourist trap full of horrible meats.
The best BBQ in Ft Worth is either Cooper's, Angelo's, Cousin's, or Smokey's. Check out Smokey's if you go play Links at Waterchase but otherwise going to east Ft Worth is difficult. Cooper's is the little sister of their famous location in Llano and they do an admirable job in FW. Keep an eye out for the heavy handed knife man as you'll have a $25 bill for one person before you know it. Remember, the width of your thumb is about 1/4 lb of meat. Angelo's and Cousin's are FW institutions (Railhead or Riscky's will also get mentions...neither are memorable for me). I slightly prefer Cousin's (not really sure why) but you'll be satisfied either way.
The two other BBQ venues worth mentioning (and arguably 2 of the 3 best in the DFW area) are Randy's BBQ in Red Oak and Off the Bone BBQ in Ft Worth. I didn't include Off the Bone in the FW list because it's in far south Ft Worth and unless you went to play Tierra Verde, you likely won't find yourself in that area. If you want to make a dedicated trip there you will NOT be disappointed. They serve the best ribs in DFW (with a nod to Baker's Ribs and the Baby Back Shak in Dallas) The same is true of Randy's as well. There's no good golf in that area (public or otherwise) but I never hesitate to exit off I-35 when heading to/from Austin to stop in for a quick snack of their fantastic brisket. It's a Top 5-7 brisket in the state of Texas for me.
Maybe this post should be moved to a thread about a "Dallas BBQ with a side of golf" trip.

Bear Creek is good but it gets a ton of play and isn't in the best shape right now. Fossil Creek and Tiera Verde are two of the best in the Ft Worth area. Old American and The Tribute are the two best (Public) courses in DFW. Cowboys is nice and it was nice to play once but I wouldn't go back over the above mentioned courses.

Thanks for the BBQ recommendations. Will be staying at the Gaylord Texan this weekend and will give Bartleys a try , and hoping I'll get a round in at Grapevine golf course.

Played The Grapevine Golf course this morning. Was the first to tee off on a Sunday morning (walk in without a tee time) thanks to the 35 degree cold and a 20 mph wind :)

$50 for green fee + cart, played all 27 holes and got done in less than 3 hours! I needed to get back to my hotel before 11AM and was hoping to finish at least 18 holes, did not think I would be able to complete 27 holes. The course was in great condition, greens were great and a little soft thanks to rain previous day, did not feel the wind a whole lot ( I am assuming the Dam blocks it, as it was BLOWING on the other side). I score 3 over, 5 over and 3 over on the mockingbird, pecan and bluebonnet courses playing from the black tees. I would take those scores any day playing the courses in Austin, and to shoot those in the conditions I was playing on a course for the first time bb.gif

Thanks to the 3 foursomes (the regular crowd) that let me play thru on the Pecan course. Didn't have to wait anytime, as they let me thru right away.

Going to Dallas in a couple of weeks and need info on where to play. Old American Golf club is one spot I have in mind.
If you in town to play on July 19th, there is a chartity event (2man scramble) at Bridlewood in FlowerMound and if you dont have a partner, they can pare you up and it cost $10 less than what it would cost to just book a regular t-time. You have to register by July 13th so if you can, it is an awesome course, you can register at www.valshouse.org/golf

I recently played (in Ohio) with a fellow from Plano. Asked him how Pecan Hollow was. (I used to basically live there.)
Was told the course had become one of his favorites.

Since the thread has a new life, I'd say that The Tribute, Old American, Texas Star and Cowboys remain good choices.

Tierra Verde is in good shape this time if year. i just played 18 holes yesterday with my 12yr old son. The greens are in good shape. We walked unfortunately for me I saw more of the course than he did hahaha. He shot 81 and let's just say he beat me by couple of strokes haha.

Texas Star is EASILY the best public course in dfw under $100. I just played old American. Their greens are in awful awful shape. Fantastic course but the greens make it hardly worth the money. Tribute is great. Grapevine course is great. Cowboys is great but pricey ( but includes food and non alcoholic drinks). Avoid tour 18. Former great course that has deteriorated and is now a 5.5 hour round with the lower green fees. Bear creek is very poor shape ( both courses). I just played a scramble there and it was sad to see how far it's fallen.

Texas star
Tribute
Grapevine
Cowboys
Sky creek
Bridlewood

Those are the best publics in my opinion. Honorable mentions to Stevens park, cedar crest , Tennyson highlands

I would definitely consider the Texas Star. It recently reopened after converting to mini dwarf Bermuda greens. It's a higher end muni not too far from DFW airport.

did tx star really reopen? i thought it was just closed not too long ago

Yes. Played there in early June. It was in amazing shape.

Great thread...also going to Dallas in Sept. for the UCLA-UT football game and want to play somewhere. Staying in Irving, so driving 20-30 miles isn't out of the question. Would like to stay under $80, was planning on doing Tour 18 but sounds like that won't be a good choice.

Any suggestions?

Texas Star. Bar none. I'm a member of a private club and still try to play star once a month. It's about a 45 min drive for me as well. From Irving it should be no more than 15-20 min at the most. It's usually around $72 and can be booked on golfnow.com.

And- HOOKEM HORNS! I will be at the game as well.

Texas Star is a great choice and definitely would not play Tour 18 over Texas Star. Although I played basketball always glad to see support for the program enjoy the game guys I'm looking forward to being at the game too.
