How do you handicap your friends

Recommended Posts

I always play for money, there seems to be no incentive if I don`t. I`ve been playing with a few guys separately for years. So some years back we decided to use different ways, other than just strokes, to figure handicaps.

We sat down and discussed our games and agreed that a good way to handicap a game was for me to play the whites and my friend to play the reds. It worked out great because I was longer than he and this worked well. Another guy I give him one putts on all par 3`s and 5`s, however many strokes he takes to get on and a 1 putt is his score. Another I take the 5 longest par 4`s and he doesn't have to tee off we just place a ball even with mine distance wise. And the strangest one is I couldn`t use a putter, the suprising thing was I didn`t do to bad at all.

Has anyone else come up with different ways to figure handis other than strokes. I`m always looking for another way.

Play without handicaps but do the match under "Sunningdale Rules". It's straight-up (no strokes) match play with one exception. If either player is 2-down or more he gets a stroke.

Example. If you win the first two holes and go 2-up, your opponent will get a stroke on the third hole. And he keeps getting one stroke until he gets back to 1-down in which case you go back to playing straight up.

This way if you're matching within plus or minus 8-10 strokes or so it will keep the match from ever getting out of hand. Unless of course one person just has an awful day. It also assures that the stronger player will win probably 80-90% of the time which makes sense.

The big advantage is you don't need to know anybody's handicap except to know they're not like 20 strokes better or worse than yourself. And in that case it's hard to come up with any game that's fair competition between a scratch golfer and a 22-handicap or whatever.

That is a good way, it keeps the game interesting. The guys I play with arn`t radically different in their abilities other than they are not quite as consistant or their driving distances are poor. Why don`t I know about Sunningdale rules, I must lead a sheltered life  Thanks
