Furyk jumps to #2 in the World

Recommended Posts

I was very happy to see Jim Furyk win another event this weekend. But I'm also happy for him that edged up another spot past Phil to the number 2 spot in the world(nothing against Phil). He'll never get the #1 spot and I know people will argue that there are at least a dozen players out there that are better than Furyk and that his reign at #2 will be short lived. However, I don't see any of the other top 5-6 that are as determined and as competitive as Furyk is on an event to event basis. He's not as talented as Phil or Els, but he's grinded his way to the top. Congrats!

I have to say, kudos to Jim and all that, but given Phil has won two of the last five majors, it seems surprising to say the least that this has happened.

I guess Phil just throws in a LOT of poor shows as well as a few stellar ones, while Jim is Mr Consistent without ever being brilliant.

It IS surprising, but that's golf. That's why Tiger was #1 for far too long, when it was already clear that Vijay had been playing better for months.

Phil might have more talent or bigger wins, but I'll say that no pro, not even Tiger, gets more from his own game and ability than Furyk. He's #2 in the world through his guts and sheer force of will, period. He'll never blow a field away, but he's always right there.

Can you tell he's one of my favorite players to watch?

All I can say is that I'm glad he's on a roll right now, when we'll need him most: Ryder Cup time! Go Jimbo.

I have to say, being from the other side, Furyk is probably the most annoying player to watch on the US team.

By which I mean, hits the best shots. He seems to hole things a lot. Bunker shots, shots from the fairway, the works. Only in the RC though.

other than tiger, i don't there is any other player that has played as good and as consistently week in and week out. its good to see and "average joe" (i think of furyk as an average joe - you can see furyk out in his yard mowing it) ranked so highly.

Does the #2 World ranking require BETTER LOOKING golf shirts? His are F-UGLY.

His shirts are right up there with DUFFY. Got to give it to Jim, he grinds, lacks length off the tee and hits it damn near the hole A LOT.

He's got a contract with Tabasco to wear their appearal...so it could be worse...as far as Tabasco goes the stuff he wears from them is pretty watered down.

Another example of how the ranking system is flawed. Phil has won 3 majors in the last 3 years and 2 of 4. Furyk won the 2003 US Open. A bunch of top tens is better than three majors?

Furyk is one of my favorite players. Unassuming, a great iron player and putter, a real worker that goes his own way and almost always finishes high on the leaderboard.

As an european, I know who I want to win the the Ryder Cup, but if Furyk and Woods are paired, it will be tough not to cheer for them! :cheesy:

Way to go, Jim! I always root for the PA guys. It's nice to see that a guy who does not hit it 300 off the tee can still excel on Tour.

there are more tournaments to play other than the 4 majors on the schedule every year......phil can have his 3 but he doesn't finish well in those that he admitted to using as "tune ups." bottom line he just isn't consistent while j. furyk holds his own week after week. flashes of brilliance are nothing w/o being sustained.

Furyk has won about 12 events in his career, Mickelson 29. It's all about wins not finishing top 10 every week. You cannot even compare Jim and Phil, regardless of teh world ranking.

World ranking is on a rolling 2 year basis...not lifetime wins and Jim has just been really hot this year. Yeah Phil won the masters but Jim finished 4th there too.

And if is was wins alone that counted Nicklaus and Steed (I think) would be number 1 and 2 in the world..!!!! The rankings are about recent consistancy not career.

Both points have merit. But wasn't it just a few months ago that everyone was riding the Phil bandwagaon saying he was really the world #1? Consistency should be as important for the pros as it is for us amatuers.
