should a club builder at golfsmith know whats available? i think so

camron winn grip rant

so i was at a golf galaxy, on the shelf they had a red and a black cameron corded grip. next to those was an emty bin with the camron winn grip tag. i asked if they were goinf to stock them back up and was told if titleist sent them out they would be in the bin. they dont order them, titleist sends out and then they put them out.

i was at golf smith during the F&F discount weekend and asked the guy working in the builder booth if they had the winn cameron grip, or any cameron grips at all since none were on the shelf. his responce was he laughed at me and said winn doesnt make a cameron grip. i laughed at him and said i probably learned more about club building in the last 2 years than you have your entire career and you might want to double check if winn actually does makie a cameron grip before you laugh at someone and say they dont. he didnt say a word after that and went into another back room area

i left the store in discust and assured myself why i simply just buy those items from golf galaxy, especially since i get points at least for what i spend and golfsmith gives nothing

my rant though is shouldnt someone in the indistry be trained on what the company sells?

any store that sells cameron putter grips doesn't put them on the shelf - or shouldn't have them on the shelf. cameron grips are only supposed to be sold as installed on a cameron putter. as for if winn makes cameron grips, i was under the impression that golf pride makes cameron/titliest grips. 100% positive on the first point, not positive on the second point. feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

there is "one" grip that is made by winn, its on the cameron website as well and the tag is on the GG shelf of the empty bin. winn may also make the split grip on the long putters, im not sure, but i am really interested in the normal winn grip. if they arent posed to be sold loose then GG is in violation but there was a bin full of black and a bin full of red cords and an empty bin of the winn ones on the GG shelves, main reason i wanted one was i really want to try the super stroke but if it doesnt work out i want to put another cameron grip back on and the one i would want to back on is the winn made one

Huh? I can go to any of my local GG's and get corded or non-corded red SC grips put on, or dancing scotty red or black pistol grips. I've put the dancing scotty on a cleveland and a taylormade, and bought a couple to put on a friends putter myself.

Not sure if I'm misunderstanding you or what, but that definitely is not correct in the greater PA area.

Okay here's the deal guys. Stores are only aloud to order a limited number of Scotty grips per month. So don't be surprised if you go somewhere after the 20th and they are sold out. Also, some of the custom shop grips are made by Winn, but only the Red Midsize Winn is available aftermarket without sending your putter into the custom shop to have it installed. These are even harder to get and most stores don't even bother to carry them.

So the guy at Golfsmith was partly correct because there isn't a Winn grip that is a stock offering (besides long/belly). But he is wrong that there is no such thing because some custom shop grips are made by Winn.

I work at a Golf Galaxy and this is what I can tell you about the grips. We are allowed to sell the red/black Cameron grips to anyone who wants them, since we don't stock a whole lot of them our entire stock (usually) is out in the bins.

We haven't stocked the Winn grips for as long as I can remember and I dont know of any GG location that still does, chances are the tags are just old and haven't been replaced. Our grip stock is set to auto fill so once we hit a certain number of grips they are automatically re ordered but no one at the store really has any idea of what is coming in grip orders just that they are coming.

Moreover, knowing that a grip exists does not speak to your knowledge of club building. The guy might be an excellent club builder, but simply not "up" on Scotty Cameron grips.

We have a Titleist account and can order the "buffed" black and red (Futura era), black and red Baby T's, and black and red corded Baby T's. we can order as many as we want. It's my understanding that stocking the custom grips though, are a different account, and must be obtained through Scotty, and not Titleist....and it costs more. It's never been advantageous at any store I've ever worked at to do so. There just isn't enough drive to justify stocking a bunch of the custom Scotty grips, when they are just as obtainable via the Scotty Custom Shop website.

I do understand your frustration, but for a limited-number product like that (I knew they existed but had never seen one) it would be fairly uncommon for a store like GS to stock it, I would think. And I agree, if he is a club repairer at Golfsmith he is probably a little verse in terms of installing, etc, but may not be up-to-date with all stock. That's not his responsibility - more so the manager (or higher-ups).

So maybe he came off a little rude from the beginning. Maybe he had a bad day and shouldn't have taken it out on you from the get go. Maybe you started the conversation a little on the aggressive and confrontational side...which based on your post would be my bet. But alas, I wasn't there so don't know the exact setting (there are always 3 sides to a story). However one thing that is for sure (from your own words), that was a confrontational and pompous retort. Do you know for a fact that you know more than him, even if you did/do, why can't you put it in a more mature manner instead of an insult? Did it make your day to say that? i didnt mean to come off sounding arrogant or anything but the guy laughed at me first here when i asked if they had the winn cameron grip. they way he came off was like i was some dumb golfer who didnt know anything. so im sorry but i dont feel bad for what i said to him at all
