Grip Question.

Hey guys I am in the processed of getting ideas for my set for 2012. I have to go from Standard grips to midsize grips because I broke my palm in 2009 and its still hurts but if I use midsize grips it dose not bother me as much. So here is my problem. I was going to regrip all my clubs with Lamkin Crossline Midsze but they are 62 grams compared to my tour velvet grips witch are 52. I know that changes the swing weight points by 2 points so if my club s are d3 or d4 it will go to d1 to d2. But what if I go to the tour velvet midsize that weighs 53.5. In my eyes it should not change it at all am i right. Please any insight will be great. I have to save up for my set but I have my new set all maped out here is what I am playing for 2012.

I want my driver and 3 wood to stay the same as they are right now at d3

I want my irons to be d2-d3 3-pw

I want my wedges to be d-4

Thanks guys I hope to have my set done by Jan 2012

I found a answer to a 10-11 gram heaver grip but not a answer to my question of 1.5 grams i dought it will change anything.

The swing weight won't ACTUALLY change. The scale will tell you it did, but you're just tricking the scale. Put a human scale under a towel rack and stand on it. Now, place your arms on the towel rack and push down (as if you're lifting yourself up). Presto! You just lost 15 pounds!

Except you didn't You're simply tricking the scale.

10 grams extra, 2 grams extra, doesn't matter. The EFFECTIVE swing weight of your club will not change.

It's been discussed here before, but grips don't REALLY affect the swing weight of the club. They trick the scale in to thinking that the weight has changed, but the effective swing weight of a club is the same regardless of the grip.

He is dead on. Have whoever builds the clubs use standard weight grips to get the SW correct and then just install the heavier grips. If you adjust headweight to compensate for heavier grips you will lose the balance of the club.

^^^ Exactly. This is one reason I SW new clubs without grips. Here is probably the best explanation of the subject I have seen yet. It's a little long, but a great read:

http://blog.hirekogolf.com/2010/02/tricking-the-swingweight-scale/

"The effect of grip weight is often misunderstood. The center of the mass of the grip lies in the hands. So changing from a 50g grip to a 25g grip may have little or no effect on the heft or what you feel when you hold the golf club. In the past, grip weight was influenced by the size and that is a factor that golfers can easily feel. Not so with weight."

Even with all this evidence, you should probably go with the TV midsize. The first time something doesn't feel right, you're going to be wondering if you should have gone with the lighter grips.

So just save yourself the future mind games and go with the lighter grips now.

Also, have you ever tried the Bionic golf gloves? They were based on gardening gloves made for people with arthritis and have pads that take the pressure off your hand joints -- might be another option to look at in place of (or in addition to) the larger grips.

I was working in a golf store when they first came out, and people with hand problems absolutely loved them. They're more expensive, but also more durable than your standard glove. Something to think about, anyway.

Good luck.

For what it's worth, I changed last year from standard size ping oem grips on ALL my irons, wedges, hybrids, and driver, to mid size - first winn grips, and more recently, vdr's. The weight of the grips was something in the range of 6-9 grams different. I never noticed a thing in terms of swingweight, I can still feel the club head just fine, no timing issues, etc. I don't think you will notice a thing. I will say that the size of the grips - going to midsize - has tremendously helped my game. Much better control and comfort now, even though my hands are average size at best.

interesting... swing weight is an expression of weight distribution of a golf club about at fixed fulcrum point..not an actual weight but a way of comparing the weight distribution of one club to another.

Decrease the weight of the grip, increases the swing weight or makes the club feel more "head heavy". Thats not tricking a scale ( a simple lever thats been calibrated).

but it does make sence that holding a club 4" from the butt end is different than a 14" fulcrum, so even thou the swing weight increases, the weight of the grip has no effect on the heft or what you feel when you hold or waggle the club.

Enjoy your game.

Technically, the scale would still be reading correctly - as far as it is concerned - the heavier/lighter grips on the end. But you're 'tricking' the result - the swing weight isn't ACTUALLY changing.
