except for super talented or strong golfers like jack nicklaus, tom watson, sandy lyle, etccc....the 2 iron was a club you used when you needed a low boring flight---with or without a tee....

it's a handy club for a british open or links course or on tight fairways as a driving club..

you see top pros switching a club for a 2 iron or it's equivalent from time to time...

ernie els, tiger woods, and phil m come to mind and gary woodlands swears by it------he hits it 280+ yards!!

PS..i have a bridgestone airmuscle 2-iron which i carry from time to time in specially windy days on hard fairways....

Cheers for that, 280 yards! I bet he hits that right where he wants it too. The only use I would have for one would be for punching it low from below trees hahaha

Tons of pros still bring them out for the Open Championship and links style courses.

Some reasons you don't see many two irons out there are that lofts are stronger (your typical PGA 3i might be the old school 2i) and the low lofted hybrid has become a good compromise of the 2i and the 5wood.

Not to mention that you don't need that ball flight when the fairways are cut so short and it isn't too windy.

I hit my 695 mb 2 iron better than a 5 wood or 19* hybrid. I usually hit it 260-270. I cant explain it, but i just hit it better. Right now its the most consistent and best club in my bag.

You need stiffer iron shafts.

2 iron is the best club in my bag. I know my game would be lost without it.
Just curious, what is your handicap? Is it a blade?
1.4, only playing once or twice a week puts a hurt on my short game. It's a Mizuno Pro II 2 iron, and I just got a Mizuno Pro 1 iron, the rest of my irons are KZG ZOs. Driver and long irons have always been pretty easy to me. If you watch Tiger in the early and mid 2000s when he was working with Harmon you will see why Tiger was the best in the game with long irons. He moved and turned behind the ball which creates a lot of torque, club head speed, and allows you to move all of your weight into the ball. All of these are extremely necessary if you want to hit long, high, straight long irons. I worked pretty hard to copy this and is why I love my 2 iron.

I grew up playing with a 2 iron. I DO NOT hit it 2000 yds. I'm 64 and I hit it ( Ping I5) 195 to 205, but very straight. Great on short Par 4s and long Par 3s. Works for me. I just can't get the hang of a hybrid, though I'm sure they are the future. Don't like looking at them either. I don't like 5 woods, they balloon on me. I hit my 3 iron about 185 and my 3 wood 215-220. As long as I can still hit it it's staying in the bag. Actually, todays 3 irons are pretty close in loft to the old 2 irons. They are going away slowly but surely. Got a new set of Ping I15s. No 2 iron available. I play with a guy who can still drill a 1 iron. Use what works I guess.

I am changing from 4 to 3 wedges leaving an open space in my bag. I also often miss a 2-iron, so what I am thinking is changing the loft of my 910H from 19 to 20.50 degrees and adding a 2 iron. With this setup, I will be able to use the hybrid from roughish lies, where an iron is difficult to hit and at the same time have a 2 iron for low shots...

New setup:
Driver
Spoon
2 iron
20,5 degree hybrid
4-pw
52 degree
58 degree

How does that sound?

Sandy Lyle always used a 1 iron. 2 iron was a fairway club I am afraid. I should know. The drivingiron or 1 iron was used to avoid plugging on soft fairways, or navigate tight fairways and gain maximum role. When the long irons were in use, Persimmon drivers were in the bag, role and bulge and lots of shape off the tee, not. Like today with the r11 low spin shafts bomb drives! Long irons are defunct in one way as woods have travelled a great distance in design and irons for the pure players have not really kept up pace. No plugging off the tee, easier to hit fairways... Technology in woods and balls has made the long iron defunct. Plus, it's no longer seen as "bragging rights" if you can hit a 1 iron out of divot over 250 yards.....that is why you do not see as many in bag....it's dollar bills guys, if you have a 1or 2 iron in the bag, you better be abe to hit it like the best in the world, or forget it and follow Tom Watsons strategy on how to be competitive with the big boys. Brains and hybrids!

I"m with richard t... I still use a 2 iron, Mizuno MP-33 which matches the rest of my set. It's 19* 39.5" long. I don't hit it 260 either, but about 215 normally. My 3 iron is a comfortable 200 yard club and my 3 wood is about 235. I'm 48, low single digit hc and like others I can't get the hang of hybrids, more in my head I think than anything else. Probably some day when I change out my 33s for MP-69s I'll look into an 18* hybrid (I tend to balloon 5 woods too often, just haven't found the right head/shaft combo I guess). But the 2 iron is not a difficult club to hit. I don't try it out of the rough, but off the tee or from the fairway it's no tougher than a 5 iron, really. Maybe it's from growing up with thin soled blades and getting comfortable with that look. I suppose it's just what you get used to.

I've never figured out why 2 irons are thought to be for the hairy chested set only. Same with muscleback blades. The difficulty of hitting these clubs is greatly over-stated. Any decent ball striker can play them--you don't have to have a 115 mph swing for it, really...

I strongly suspect a major reason Mizuno and Titleist no longer make 2 irons is that hybrids and woods are more expensive

.....another reason for the rarity of the 2-iron in the modern set make-up is that the 3-iron of today IS the old 2-iron!!

I will bring my Mizuno Pro 1 OR 2 iron out to tighter couraes in the middle of the summer to mid fall when the fairways are running. I only use one for low running tee shots that have to fins the short grass. If I have a 2 iron, i pull a 3 wood out and still have a 2 hybrid as wll for par fives.

Tried to love the 2 iron but I really can't. I hover around 120 mph with driver but am not a high ball hitter. I hit my irons with mid launch/trajectory which is why I don't carry anything above 4 iron. I love my 2 hybrid too much. I can hit it high and get it land soft. I can't do that with a 2 iron.

I'm not a pro but I play a R9 TP 2 iron and love it. I've been trying to give hybrids a try and just picked up a 910H 17* Ahina x flex and will see how that goes. Will prob switch it out depending the course.

I play a Nike Forged Blade 1 iron as a driving iron. 17* produces a nice boring flight with great roll even in wet conditions. 258 yards average total distance. I hit it 270+ yards when the course is burnt.
Can even play it from the rough from 235 and land it soft. I special ordered 2 to replace my 2 iron a few years ago after seeing reruns of BIG 3 GOLF with Nicklaus, Palmer and Player on the Golf Channel. Seeing them hit 1 irons 250+ yards was quite impressive and inspiring. Strange the series never made it to DVD.
