Bending lie angles before or after trimming the final length?

When building a new set of irons, do you bend the lie angles before or after you trim the final length? I have done it both ways, does it really matter either way? I would think that it may affect the overall length a little bit, right?

I don't think you can bend enough to change length significantly. You should end up bending them all about the same also.

You might find a small change in swing weight if you don't set lie angles right before you glue shaft and head together
3* is 1 swing weight point, so if you want it all to be "dead on", they should be adjusted for lie angles before swing weighting and epoxy.
New or used heads is never "dead on" specs, but always needs a little tweak to get there.

How would swing weight be changed if the length and weight of the head are the same and the only difference is the lie angle? I don't see how bending once the shafts are fitted would make a difference to anything.

When you change the lie angle, you move center of gravity of the head.
Upright gives a "shorter" club
Flat gives a"longer" club

The difference who changes is the difference from the butt end down to COG in the club head, and the swing weight will notice :-)

Because bending an iron flatter effectively makes the toe stick out further, which means it will seem a little heavier to sw scale. Vice versa for making an iron more upright. Bending doesn't change the overall length, but it will make a club slightly longer or shorter when in a parallel position, such as on a swingweight scale.

If you really want to be precise, club length (for every club except driver) is measured against the actual lie angle of the individual club. So bend first, then measure and cut.

Set the final lie angle first, then measure with an accurate club ruler that has an adjustable lie stop, then make your cut.

3* (which is quite a lot) equals 1 swingweight point regardless of the length of the clubface? I can see that a slight difference might possibly register on a swingweight scale but I'm not sure that anyone would feel a swingweight difference just from changing the lie angle. Are you sure this doesn't just 'trick' the swingweight scale?

I think you miss understand a bit @spooky.

There is a true change of swing weight, when lie angles are changed, but no player can feel it.
Its a matter for you mind, making everything "perfect", no matter if you can feel the difference or not, because its not a subject at all.
- it's about perfectionism and elimination of possible and impossible errors that might happen

For some players, specs "dead on" is what matters. Then every mistake out there got an address: the player him self.

No it does NOT trick the swing weight scale, but the changes are to small to be noticed by the player.
Most players cant feel the difference between D2 and D3 and thats 1 hole SW point

If you just put a set together and adjust lie angles afterwards, all depending on how far they have to be tweaked, the will all be varying on swing weight, but most likely within 1 sw point, and its no trick, but TRUE swing weight change.

The only thing that "tricks" a swing weight scale, is using grip weight higher than 52 grams or lower than 50, or weight placed on the fulcrum at 14" from the butt.
Lie angle change, influence on the "right side" of the fulcrum, so any readable change on this side, is a change of true swing weight (no matter how small it might be)

So it is a nominal difference that would probably only be felt by a player who is sensitive enough to detect a half swingweight change? When a player is swinging the club, instead of putting it on a swingweight scale, I would be interested to see if anyone could detect a difference.

Out of curiosity, if I sent my irons to Ping for a lie adjustment to a different colour code would they also adjust the weights in the heads?
