Great story, Charlie. Reminds me of my most valued clubs. My uncle had a set of '39 Macgregor Tommy Armour Toney Penna model woods. Rec No. 4203 with black fiber inserts. You might remember them. Hot stuff back then for sure. I don't know what happened to the driver and the 3 wood, but I still have the 2 and 4 woods in original condition with long black leather perforated grips. The stories he used to tell about those clubs and the old pros reminded me of your story. Too bad I didn't listen to him more often when I was a kid.

Not doubting your story but a little curious. What round in what year did this take place? In every Masters that Hogan competed in the year after winning the U.S. Open, he never shot 67.

Charlie was old and had a few pops. Would I throw a wet blanket on his story? The proverbial t***( in a punchbowl?

Charley:

I'm not trying to be the t*** in the punchbowl but the facts are that your story is just that, a story. Charlie Coe won the U.S. Amateur in 1949 and 1958. This means that he would have been paired with the Masters winner of 1949 for the 1950 Masters and the Masters winner of 1958 for the 1959 tournament. He would have been paired with Sam Snead in '50 and Art Wall, Jr. in '59.

you are the t in the punchbowl. why would i want to spoil a tale from a multiple us and british am , runner up in the masters in his own home. that is the way he told the story. perhaps u would be happy if i said they both played well rather than give specific scores

I would say that a legendary "old time" amateur is allowed
to tell a story any way they want (especially in their own
home and after a few "pops").

I don't care what they shot or what date/year it was - I
enjoyed the story Charley.

How many amateurs ever rose to the level of Charley Coe
ability wise? Not many.

Charley - do you remember Chuck Kocsis from Michigan?

He was perpetually the best am in Mich. Another guy was Gene Dahlbender, who did turn pro. Faust Bianco long time pro at Dearborn CC was a good friend. He had many successful assistants. Including Fuzzy , the masters champ

Yes, he was one of the best amateurs in the country for many years. Charley Coe never turned pro because his dad hit oil wells in Oklahoma. He was arguably the best am who never turned pro exct for Bobie Jones. I asked him how he beat Rufus King so badly in the finals. I think it was 11 down with 10 to play. He said he only missed three times under 15 feet when he closed him out.

I'm sorry if I offended you. I just happen to believe that historic events should be told correctly. Otherwise, future generations will have no idea about the true happenings of our past.

Also, being in the Carolinas and talking about great amateurs that never turned pro, I have one name...............Harvie Ward.

In the interest of historical correctness, Harvie Ward did turn pro in 1974.

I thought I remembered seeing him play on the Senior Tour in the 80s, and this article confirms that.

Well - you learn something new everyday - I never new that
Harvie Ward turned pro at some point - but looks like he did.

Ward. Was a magical talent. Ken V enturi said," if Nicklaus and Harvie Ward were both in their prime and my life depended on it, I would take Ward." I think he shot an unreal 63 at the San Francisco Golf Club. Unfortunately, he did not TURN PRO . He lost his amateur status. If u wish, read the book" THE MATCH" for more. Harvie Ward

While in college, I took a few lessons from Harvie Ward at Foxfire Resort in the Pinehurst area. If you teach golf and accept money for it, you are then a professional.

The Wikipedia article mentions that Ward's loss of amateur status that took place in 1957 was resolved in 1958. He played on the 1959 Walker Cup team, so obviously he was still an amateur at that point.

It also mentions his teaching at Foxfire, among other places, after turning professional in 1974. I remember reading about it in Golf Digest when it happened, but his turning pro had nothing to do with the issues he had with his amateur status in 1957. They were two separate events separated by 17 years.

No, he didn't. Hogan won the Open in 1948. In 1949 he shot rounds of 73, 68, 71, & 76 at the Masters. He won the Open again in 1950 and then shot rounds of 70, 72, 70, & 68 at the 1951 Masters. After winning the 1951 Open, Hogan shot rounds of 70, 70, 74, & 79 at Augusta National. Hogan's final Open victory was in 1953. In the 1954 Masters tournament he shot 72, 73, 69, & 75. Hogan never shot 67 in any round of the Masters after winning the U.S. Open the previous years.

Great story Charley. Hogan must have been a laugh a minute. Talk about a guy who could get in the zone!
I once read an article about Hogan that also had a story about playing in the Masters. I can't recall the year or playing partner. it was all about his total concentration. Supposedly, on the 12th hole, Hogan had the honors and put the ball on the green. As usual for Hogan. However, His playing partner then went to the tee and hit the ball right into the hole! How cool is that. But when they got to the 13th tee, Hogan looked at his playing partner and said, "I had a three. What did you have?"
Myth or fact? Total Concentration or a mind game? regardless, it is a great story and kind of fits in with your story about Harvey Ward.
Thanks for sharing it .

Hogan actually made a 2 to the fella's ace. And remarked on the 13th tee he couldn't remember the last time he made a deuce on 12.
