I heard a rumor from a fitter at Golf Galaxy that Webb Simpson is leaving Titleist to go to Nike. Has anyone else heard this?

 

Hearing a rumor from a fitter at Golf Galaxy is like hearing an NBA rumor from the guy who sells shoes at Foot Locker

Nike gear figures pretty prominently in UGA golf... Several players use quite a bit of it...I'm assuming something going along with Nike "sponsorship" of UGA athletics...

Even though I have heard of him I can tell you why. We're getting into 2012 and his last relevant win was the Shell Houston in 2008. His other win came at the Mayakoba Classic against the weak sisters of the poor. You'd probably see a stronger field on the Nationwide Tour that week considering it's played the same week as the WGC Match Play. Tough to consider that a solid win when the top 64 players in the world and then some are not in the field at the Mayakoba. I have no disrespect for the guy. Just stating the simple facts why no one knows who he is.

Also, I don't know the specs of Donald's deal with Mizuno, but it would not surprise me if Taylormade offered him a King's ransom to come over to the darkside completely.

Not gonna happen. Donald is a staunch Mizuno iron player and Mizuno's lead player. Plus he gets more money from Titleist than any other non-staff player to play their ball. Despite what people here think, these companies have budgets and TMAG (nor Titleist/Acushnet) will spend an open pocketbook to buy him in total. He is the world number 1 right now, but his name doesn't really sell enough equipment to make anyone out bid Mizuno for their share of his endorsement money.

Donald would need a bigger fanbase to attract one of the bigger companies. Even still, it seems like his relationship with Mizuno is rock solid, and that he is the kind of guy that would not go for the money, he seems much more loyal than that. Maybe I'm kidding myself though.

I can't wait to start hearing some press releases and getting to see the pics of new equipment that go along with them.

Lovemark - lot of hype, absolutely fits the Nike stud golfer image. Steven Ames- whatdoyawant from me he is Canadian. Carl P. - I cannot explain.

Other than Davis Love carrying him around in his pocket, Justin has gone the way of Lee Jansen, both of whom got a head start on David Duval. Unless Charlie Rhymer is gonna give up his spot I think we have seen the last of him till next silly season.

Do you disagree with my thoughts on the branding and position of Leornard? Nike? Polo?

Justin Leonard seems to me a youngish guy with an "old-man" game, spirit and aesthetic. To me, he fit Polo better than he ever fit Nike. The Nike brand is all about performance. All of their players are either icons or "on the come", Leonard's natural space (Polo, Mizuno) has been taken over by a better version of him- Luke Donald, and a more energetic Charlie 3 stix.

It's gonna be long time till the Champions tour for Justin. He is now Billy Andred (sp.?) without all the friends and personality.

It appears Leonard and Wagner are both headed to the same (agressive) company based in Carlsbad, although no formal announcement has been made as they still represent their former companies through December. That's all I should say in case I am the only one who knows. When I posted this, I thought the word was out. I don't want it to get back to me for leaking it.
