Gary Woodland's driver??

Recommended Posts

This is not new - plenty of the greats came from sporting backgrounds. Lots of athletes in the history of the game.
Woodland's goal was to play professional basketball, but after playing a year at division II Washburn he realized that wasn't likely to happen. I run into more and more guys like him on the golf course these days... Great athletes that don't necessarily make it to the top in their favorite sport revisit golf and apply their natural gifts to one where the ball sits still for you. Would guess we will see more and more similar, non-traditional pros on the PGA tour as time goes on...

Golfers are not athletes. Heck I bet Gary can't even dribble a basketball.

He actually played collegiate basketball his freshmen year and had a scholarship before transferring to Kansas for golf.

Gary Woodland is an ok athlete but mark my words he wont be on the US tour in 5 years. He is clearly a great striker but hasnt played enough golf for him to be a great player.
Bold statement considering the guy is top 50 in the world at the end of his rookie season with a PGA Tour victory. Can't imagine him not becoming better with experience and he already has the ability to contend and win on tour. And by "ok" athlete who are you comparing him to? Guy is considered the best athlete on tour and ive heard they had some type of test to determine athletic ability and he tested better than anyone.

Yep the champ made a big but very solid call.

You are certainly entitled to an opinion, but what is your reasoning behind it?

Great first post champ...

After constant shoulder injuries and only being able to practice from Oct 2010, 2011 has been amazing for him. I'm pretty sure he's racking up 'playing enough' to keep him at the top of the tour, or the world cup...

...and this is how we welcome him to WRX? :bb:

Rock Chalk Jayhawk Gary! He'll be around for awhile. He has improved light years under Rick Smith's teaching, in all facets of his game. Real success on tour is all about making putts. That can come and go for everyone. But he looks like he's getting better, not just on a hot streak.

Sir I'm not one to make bold statements, let alone ridiculous ones and as far as I'm concerned WRX shouldn't pander to idiots whether its their first post or 1000th. It's just ironic it was his first. Where should I start? An 'ok athlete', hasn't 'played enough'... Entitled to an opinion, yes, stupid baseless opinions, there's no place for.

If I'm wrong or politically incorrect, kill me now for trying to keep some semblance of logic and reason on this forum...

Agree with Precedent. Just because it is somebody's first post, it does not mean the membership cannot react negatively to a patently stupid comment.

FACT: Gary is an unbelievably talented athlete. This is not a subjective statement up for debate. It is a fact. The proof? Well, gee.... the ability to generate that much clubhead speed, hitting the ball with that amount of accuracy at that swing speed, under pressure, takes more athletic ability than any other golfer on the Tour can match at the moment. And, playing DII basketball also requires a terrific amount of athletic talent. If a person doubts this, they simply have no idea what they are talking about.

Perhap JSmooth can enlighten as to how Gary's athletic ability is merely "ok".

this is my fave golfer and he can go over 200mph on ball speed......... at the Barclays I watched him on the range which was a small nine hole course they closed for them he hit drives 400+ to a very small green let me paint the picture they were hitting in front of the 9th green he hit drives all the way to the 1st green and thats way over 400 to get there........ it scary during torney play he's prob swinging 75 to 80 percent
If gary can really hit the ball 400+ plus with his driver under normal conditions he would have to add like 30+ mph swing speed to his normal 125mph.

I dont think he was carrying it 400 and with his lowish flight he can get a ton of roll in the right conditions.

I was fortunate to see him play at the at&t national and im sure your aware he kills the ball. I saw him with Nick Watney who hits it relatively far and and Mark Wilson who doesn't. On a short par 4 he hit his lowest iron either a 2 or 3 a good 10 yds past Wilsons driver and even with Nick Watneys 3 wood. On another short uphill par 4 he hit this massive high draw with a hybrid 260 yds over a bunker uphill 10 feet. He does like to work his ball left to right with his driver and plays a draw with a 3 wood.

Lets assume he's not on tour in five years for whatever reason, you won't be either Jsmooth. This guy has more talent in his little toe than you have. I give the guy total props for becoming the player he has in such a short amount of time. To win a TOUR event with the small amount of big time experience he has is way impressive. I know alot of guys that have serious game that have played the tour or nationwide and have struggled to make it. His quick rise is unheard of.

I think what is really going on here is Jsmooth is really Gary Woodland and being that tour pros have delicate egos and constantly need to be told how great they aremade that post just to get that positive praise. Then after observing all the praise, he looks in the mirror, pecks flexed, superman cap flapping, samari sword at his side and says see, i told you gary, I am awesome and everyone knows it.

Not to start a war or anything, but besides DJ's build being 6'4 and in good shape the only other athletic thing ive heard of him and his claim to being "one of the best athlete's on tour" is that he can dunk a basketball, which if your 6'4 and in good shape i hope you could. Im not arguing that DJ is a good athlete but Gary Woodland was recruited and played college basketball and was a standout in high school. I cant find any background on DJ and his past athletic achievements if there even are any besides golf. So as an athlete ill take the one who has had success on a competitive level, not the one who can play sports well recreationally.
