VERY FIRST LOOK AT THE PING i20 IRONS

here is my question to you fellow golfers, if you had the choice of brand new i20 irons or anser irons,, price not involved! which would you take and most importantly, why??
Having hit neither, I would probably go with the i20 irons. I like the feel and durability of PING's cast irons. Price really wouldn't sway me either way as I have paid more for irons than the Ansers.

I never really liked the look of the i15 irons but when I did pick up an iron and test them I could not fault there performance. If these look better and are perform equally well then I might have found my first Ping iron that will make it into my bag. Looking forward to trying these against the s56's

My thoughts after hitting these...
The look is slightly different than anything else offered by PING. The top line is slightly taller in the heel and transitions downward quite sharply as it goes into the hosel. Not necessarily a bad thing, in fact this coupled with the painted white bottom groove, it made squaring the face quite a simple task. The other thing that came to mind was the feel. The insert in the cavity produced a soft, in a sort of forged kind of way, feel. Bottom line is that if I didn't already have Ansers in the bag (which I love) I would game these with no hesitation.

Can anyone comment a little more on the CFS stock shaft in these?

Based on the brief shaft profile the OP gave, am I correct in assuming a zz65 Stiff softstepped 1x would be similar to the CFS in Stiff?

Also, can anyone comment on how the CFS plays compared to the Ping AWT and Dynamic Gold shafts?

Thanks!

According to what PING posted in this thread, they recommended hard stepping a CFS Stiff twice to equal a ZZ-65...or if you wanted something slightly heavier soft step a CFS X twice.

I have not played a Ping iron in about 20 years, but I think that will change. The offset numbers, eased leading and trailing edge reminds me of my MX 300's, which fit me well.

Good point. I love the 300s. I think these are on my list.

If they don't put offset in better player woods why do they keep putting so much offset in long irons, do they think good players like to hook long irons.. Don't understand.. Ping forgiveness with mizuno offset would be the ticket.. Will have to wait for i25.. Or i20 blade.. Why not build clubs with more loft and less offset.. Is mike weir their chief designer..?

Foreleft, exactly. The sole configuration is like the MX300 and a few other Mizuno configurations.

Offset does not equal hook. Only if you don't spend the time to learn how to aim your club. Offset does alter trajectory. I've played blades, cavity backs, have MP60's now, and man I miss a bit of offset in my longer irons. Did I mention I miss offset in my longer irons.

Exactly. Offset is added to bring the center of gravity back away from the shaft axis to increase launch trajectory. With a driver and a fairway, the head is deep enough that you can bring the CG back without it. Hybrids--depends on what style you're looking at (no offset on the i20, more offset on G20 hybrids).

yea I like a bit of offset in my longer irons as well. Makes it so much easier to hit, Im actually surprised more touring pros down have more forgiving 3 and 4 irons with their players sets.

to my eye, it looks like a cast anser iron
Well, I have yet to hit the i20's, of course... But, I have hit the S56 and Anser, I personally liked the feel of the S56 over the Anser. The Anser to me felt "flat", where the S56 irons had more life to them, the ball sprung off the face where it felt like I was hitting rocks with the Ansers. Now, that may have been the cast vs forged or the shafts, as the S56 was sporting the KBS Tour where the Anser had the Project X (5.0 or 5.5 if I remember correctly, not the 6.0), both stiff shafts. That one demo of the two left me wanting the S56 over the Anser which I have been drooling over since they were first released. Now, I am wondering if my plans to purchase the S56 are now history. I really like the looks of the i20's... And the grind on those babies is exactly what I wanted to see... I think a set of i20s is in my future.

Oh, and I did hit the G20's with the CFS shaft, I loved the shaft, but didn't really like the looks of the G20 iron line up. I already game the G15 which is a great club, but my game is getting more on track after a ten year hiatus and I now want to go back to more of a players club, like the S56 or maybe the i20 line. The Ansers are currently a no go, even though I love the looks.

Haven't played or really liked PING irons since the Eye 2's..........the Anser's looked really good but as others have posted, lacked a bit of feel compared to my MP-52's. At first glance, these look really really good, love the finish, and yes, albeit a short ferrule, finally a GI set with a ferrule from PING. Great job guys on the pictures and thanks for sharing. Definitely going to give these a shot at the bag come spring.......

I have the CFS shaft in my S56 irons. It is a great feeling and great performing shaft. I went with the stiff flex, hard stepped one time, which feels a little tighter than my previous S300s.. They produce a nice flat trajectory and seem to spin less than my i10s with DG S300s.

LOL, you sound surprised. They are i-series Pings..... Pings have had offset since literally the beginning of the line...it was one of old man Solheim's core beliefs. At it's core, the i-series is game improvement club. I can't imagine a day where it wont have offset in the lower irons.

First post, long time troll. Excited with these i20's so I have to post.... +1 on the above. Offset is a core principle of Ping design, just as is their perimeter weighting concept (thicker topline). That's why it's a bit weird to read about negative comments on offset and thick topline on a new Ping iron. MWL has some good points though, save all the massive offset for the G line (love those too).

It is nice to see in the spec sheet, though, that they reduced some of the offset in comparison to the i15. For me, the ideal Ping iron would be the i15 look and finish but with i10 bounce, offset, and loft.

To be honest, I love hitting my I15's ... when I am on, they are really on. Never have hit a G15 or G20, but I have hit a G10 a few times. As far as Anser irons, man that's a hard one. Truth be known, I had a chance to hit some MP-53's awhile back, equipped with some PX's, and I haven't gotten them out of my head yet - absolutely lovely to strike the ball with those sticks ..... so in my mind, the Anser question is bigger than you may think.

(sorry, no hijack intended)

yea, Im a little disappointed in the overall shape of the iron. I was interested in getting a set because I thought they might come out with something really good after seeing the i20 driver.

Saying that I think the overall shape is very close to the anser, almost identical. They took the anser shape and threw in the s56 port. I think if the anser and i20 were side by side in photos most people wouldnt be able to correctly call them out. I didnt really care for the shape of the anser so I was hoping it would of been something brand new.

Maybe I will like them more after I hit them in person but its like with the anser. Everyone was all into them at first release, later on, not so much.
