Grass Tees

Just moved to Houston last week. Living in West U area. Can somebody point me in the direction of a decent range that is using grass tees, not mats? Drove by Hermann and Memorial Park but they were both off of mats this weekend (and totally packed to the gills.) Any advice on fun public tracks would be appreciated, too. I'm willing to drive up to an hour if need be. Thanks.

Driving Range - Try out WildCat on the south side near Reliant.

Golf Courses - Make sure you play (in this order of my preference ) :

Welcome to H-Town! Herman Park is the busiest muni in town. There is no way they could every maintain grass hitting areas there. Unfortunately with you being the West U area, I dont think there are many public ranges around there. You might try Memorial Park.

There are 2 driving ranges on US90 (South Main) between Loop 610 and US59S. Both of these have grass hitting areas.
One is just past Sam Houston Tollway (BW8), on the left side if headed out of town.
The other one is at the next traffic light after the light at FM1092 (Murphy Road). It is at the entrance to Promenade, also on the left side.
Both of these are an easy drive down South Main to get to.

Other golf courses not previously mentioned to try are.....
Quail Valley El Dorado course
Timber Creek
And, if you want to venture way out....Wilderness at Lake Jackson

There are a lot of really good golf courses within an hours drive in every direction.

Public courses in Houston are not that great. As mentioned my vote for best public would be Woodforest at Fish Creek and Cypresswod Traditons Course. Living in West U your options for decent golf are minimal and grass mats almost don't exist. I live by Memorial Park and got a membership in The Woodlands, a 40 minute drive north. There's just not much around here. Memorial Park is terrible. A bunch of hacks that will steal your clubs. I won't even go practice there. Not to mention you have to put your name in a lottery if you want to play there. Being in West U, your best shot would be Wildcat Golf Club which is down near Reliant Stadium. Just be warned it's in the total ghetto. The club is decent, but the course is not very good. It's built on top of a landfill and it looks like it.

If you're willing to drive a little, check out Swansons Golf Center on Theall Rd, its just north of BW8 off Cutten Rd. One of the better practice ranges I've been to in town.

Oh wow i am in west u also, right next to the ball fields actually, but for grass i would go to wildcat. But if you are looking for a course membership i would try westwood.
