Oil Can Vokey losing its finish

What do you all do with this issue? I'm coming from a place where I've never attempted 'working' on my clubs the way you folks do. Is there a simple way to do something, especially as a project for a first timer?

You can strip the finsh, but then it will start to rust.

to strip it, have them sit in Coca-Cola overnight.

Ya you can strip it and it will rust. Or you can strip it then apply some gun blue to give it a gunmetal/black oxide look.

It's designed to lose it's finish over time. If you didn't want this to happen, you've probably picked the wrong wedge. Plated finishes like chrome or black nickel are more durable.

My suggestion is also to strip the finish, so that you end up with a raw finish that will rust.
Does anyone have good pics of a Vokey Oil Can that's been stripped of its finish? Just to have a clear idea of what the club ends up looking like...

Thanks for all the replies. I got the wedge used, so losing the finish isn't a big deal. I view it as a way to do something different with it. Where would I get the gun blue and how do you apply it? I'm sorry for asking such simple questions.

Caswell is a leading brand of bluing and browning applications. Mainly they are used by gunsmiths so you could try this route - they make DIY kits for home use. Do a search in this forum for techniques to get a good finish.

You can also torch it to give it a darker color. Just be sure to remove them from the shaft first.

Here is an oil can I stripped and black oxed last week.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can also oil can it yourself. Newer oil will get you a lighter factory like finish. I was messing around with some used motor oil about a month ago and ended up with this:

 

 

Just make sure you do it OUTSIDE!!!!

Can I ask what may be a dumb question? When you guys strip the finish in Coke, do you have to be careful of the ferrule? Will the Coke eat into that overnight as well?

Pretty simple really.

-Pull the head.
-Clean it up with naval jelly to remove any rust.
-Remove any paintfill.
-(Not Required) I masked the face off and bead blasted the head to remove any imperfections.
-Get your oil ready (the dirtier and nastier the better) in a metal container and put it OUTSIDE.
-Use something you can hold onto the head with (I use channel lock pliers)
-Use a propane torch and heat that sucker until it starts to glow
-QUICKLY immerse the head in the oil and leave it in there for a few minutes
-Pull the head out and clean off any excess oil with a rag and let it sit overnight
-Wash the head with dishwashing liquid to remove the remaining oil
-Add paintfill
-Treat it with some type of oil (I use mineral oil)
-Epoxy her back together

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for house fires, third degree burns, or permanent disfigurements sustained during this process. Motor oil isn't all that flammable, but I believe it has a flash point of about 450*.

OMG that black oil finish looks lovely. You guys are going to kill me, I already want to setup a shop in my garage and start tinkering with clubs. I have no money for this, and my wife politely requests that you stop posting pictures of your awesome DIY jobs.

Thanks, yes I used caswells black ox kit. its not a gel but a liquid solution. Also the prep is the most important make sure they r super clean and you are good to go. These were done on about a 5 min dip and then another few minutes in the sealer.

I really want to try this on these wedges i stripped and paintfilled - I was going to go for Gun Blue but I love the Black Ox finish!!!

 

I started out by wanting to refurb these two wedges:-

 

 

 

After soaking in Coke - I promise I used Coke not chopped tomatoes!!:-

I have buffed them up since this to clean up the finish BTW!!

The face and sole will show wear. The best part is you can just redue it whenever you want. If you don't keep them oiled up and dry they get a nice rusty look to them also. The hot applied black ox holds up better but I do not think that's meant for amateurs. The cold applied works well enough for me.

No, the ferrule won't be affected by the coke. Just rawed my sm4s a few nights ago, took more like 16 hours to get them stripped but they're perfect now

I know it seems like a "fun" project but just play the wedge and let it rust.

The Coca Cola option is definitely the easiest. I'll be getting 52,56 and 60 oil can SM4's in the spring and they will be soaked in Coke as soon as they leave the box!!!
