Nice transition on the downswing
I made this short video of an iron swing by Faldo on one of his Academy shows on Golf Channel. Notice how he shallows out the club nicely on the transition to the downswing.

My instructor would tell me I'm "squatty" for addressing the ball like that.
Yeah, that setup position is Leadbetter 101...braced feeling in the legs at address, weight on the balls of your feet. Results in a lot more of a "squatty" look than is more common today.

The most beautiful swing in golf if you ask me.

Are we talking the swing the OP put up or something more like this

Give me old Faldo any day of the week. Staying in flexion is the luxury of a man that gets paid to talk about golf.

Great one!! I actually prefer the 92-96 swing, with maybe a bit less lateral motion and leg drive, but that one is awesome as well.

Yeah, the thing I was interested in was the "flattening" at the start of the downswing. Going from a more vertical backswing to a flatter downswing with that move in the transition. There have been posts about that sort of move in other swings and I thought this was a good illustration of it.

I have not played with too man amateurs that perform that move really well. Super easy to get that thing underplane in a hurry if you can't maintain it.

Both terrific ball strikers. Both were tall .Why is it that neither of the two was known as a long hitter
The way faldo went about his game led to why he wasn't a long hitter IMOP, he just sort of laid the ball out there, the story I got about him was that the practice ground at welwyn garden city was about 140 yards long and really narrow so if you didnt hit your balls straight you had to go chase them, therefore he learned how to control his ball with a really smooth tempo.

Price had that quick tempo and at times could move it out there pretty good, but the way he went about his game didn't exactly lead to distance, he never had a lot of shoulder turn and didn't create a ton of torque, but just like Faldo he grew up in an era when distance wasn't the thing, control was, so he built his game accordingly.

That being said from the same era you had guys like Sandy Lyle and Greg Norman who gave it a thorough wallop so maybe its a cop out to simply say "thats not how they played back then".

I have learned to shallow the club gradually on the back swing ,partially because shallowing the shaft in transition was difficult for me to learn. However i have also been intrigued by this move.A few questions. When is this move done, before the lateral move starts on the downswing or after or in concert?.Is the feeling of this move mainly one done by the hands or as a reaction to the lower body or core?Is this move usually done in concert with downcocking like Sergio or is Sergio the anomaly. What is the right elbow doing while this move occurs? What is the advantage of shallowing the club in transition vs shallowing on the backswing

In 1999 I worked at a private club in La Quinta, Ca. I had the opportunity to sit on the back of the range and watch Faldo hit balls for about 2 hours. He was testing new equipment for Adams at the time. I know this was toward the end of his playing career but it was really sad to see a legend of the game hit the ball as poorly as he did. Ball contact was suspect, some heel cuts, some toe pulls with the driver and he couldn't hit it out of his shadow. His driver was going about 265. I attributed his lack of power to his posture, braced knees and turn in flexion. He could never generate power because he restricted his hip turn and never got into spinal extension. This swing may look appealing on TV, but live he had a lot of issues. But hey, the guy found it for about 10 years and won a bunch of majors.

I'm investigating the same russc,

I guess it is so ingrained for those who has it that they do it subconcious....

Kelvin Miyrahira has done a lot of homework on this topic and he seems capable of teaching it to his students. So it may be worthwhile to dig into his 20 or so micro moves. But theory is one thing and I haven't been able to synthesize all those micro moves into a flowing motion.

The only thing I know is that the motion of the right hand has a lot in common with a right hand throw. In a throw you will external rotate in the start if you know how to throw. So you probably need to have some external right shoulder rotation to spare when you start the transition.

I hope someone who actually does this well, and has some thoughts about it will chime in here...

This could help you get the feel of it. Or it may not, everyone is different. Go to the top of your backswing and think about where the club is pointing. Now, point the club so that it is perfectly parallel to your target line. Or, if you're already there, lay it off and point it to the left of the target line. Think of that as the start of your downswing along with your lower body.

Say your hitting into a long par 3 with a straight cartpath leading 30 yards left of the green . Take the club back and as you start the downswing, driving your lower body, point the head of the club at the cartpath where it's next to the green (30y left). You'll feel that your right arm wants to fall straight down to your hip and the club will start descending on a shallower path than your backswing. This won't work if you want to hit the ball as soon as your backswing ends. Do it slowly and get the feel of it. (Don't point the club by doing something weird with your wrists, it has more to do with your right arm and your lower body.)

This is a hard/weird thing to explain and I'm sure it would be detrimental to a lot of people's swings, but this is just a feeling. I don't think that shallowing out comes from just initiating the swing with your lower body. I think it also has to do with bringing your right arm back down.

Use with caution. Because you may hit the biggest nasty hooks trying something like this. But, if nothing else, maybe someone will find this helpful to learn to start with their lower body and be patient from the top.

I am by no means comparing my swing to Faldo, but I have that shallowing out of the club in transition on the downswing and it has been ingrained since I was a kid, always had it and don't know why. But my point is that this can be a dangerous move to try to learn as it can lead to the club getting stuck behind you on the way down if you are not turning properly. I feel that all swings types have their positives and negatives and getting stuck is definitely the miss for this type of down swing.

Agree here, I've fought that a lot in my own swing.

Monte is around here and I'm sure would love to comment on this move.

Put it this way, Nick Faldo lived on the range. Bruce Lietzke lived on his fishing boat. Not a coincidence.

Gator, I have been a big fan of Monte's posts and video's in order to get the club out in front more. I would love to come over the top, even just once.

Yea I used to play a big over the top move and play the most boring pull cut shot all day long, it was awesome. Tried to hit draws by dropping that club inside and rolling it over....

Welcome to golfing Hades.
