For those that hate the look of Ping irons

My PINGs are tools not jewels. Im not out there to win a equipment show. I'm out there to drop my score. With what little time i did get to play with my new set last year. I was in the high 80s. Consider that most of last year i was in the 90s. There was nothing wrong with my swing or game. But using standard clubs made everything go right. New fitted clubs everything is strait or a little draw "and longer".

I knew getting PINGs was going to be a one shot deal. So i contacted a certified PING fitter and got fitted on a range with a enFlight system. Went though Discount Dans and ordered them up. I have to say though. I don't dool over gear on this site like i used too. I'm done.
I'd attribute most of the difference you experienced to the G20's being custom fit for you.
Seems plausible… if I hit them better they would seem more forgiving. But I do stand by my assessment that they feel/sound better. Don't know if it is the head or the shaft as they are both different.

Edit: Note that with new clubs it was very easy to see the dimpled silhouette of my contact point on the clubface. In fact, repeatedly so after wiping off with a wet towel. I did indeed catch my fair share out to the toe. Same positions as the contact tape in the fitting. I am working on it.

This is the criteria I have used to determine the forgiveness (in both distance and windage) as well as feel. Possibly, if you nutted them more often than me, you would experience less difference.
Regarding the toe hits, I'm curious if the fitting placed you into slightly longer clubs than standard, and was that across the complete iron set? If so, how much longer . . . . . +0.25", +0.50" ? I'm considering some new G20s or i20s, but what my old G2s show for face wear / strike patterns is well-centered for 5I, 6I, 7I but then becoming toe-biased for 8I thru GW. Seems like length adjustments (a bit longer) for the shorter irons would mess with the yardage gaps - - just curious on your fitting details. Thx. Then I need to find a good fitter for my new clubs!

I love Pings! Playing G10's and i5's lately but have also owned Eye2, i15's & G20.

Not trying to rain on anyones parade but to me the G20's were almost identical to the G10's. I haven't played G15's but have to assume they are also similar. Great great irons. Just don't expect there to be much difference between them.

The i10's look very similar to the i3+ blades (still own the i3+ blades), but quite a bit more forgiving. I've found in demoing the G20, that it is more forgiving than even the G10. The looks are similar, but the technology has improved, and and feel, performance, and forgiveness are better in my experience.

They are all standard length, white dot, R flex. My swing fault is a little inside with an early release. I have always been concerned about having clubs fit to my swing fault, but it is pretty damned consistent at this point and I know I can always send them back to Ping to have them re-adjusted should I get to the point of flattening out my swing.

According to Ping's chart, my measurements brought me in at green dot, but I was contacting the ground about a degree out with these so we decided on white.

My build is short legs, long torso, short arms… 5'10".

If your swing path is a little inside like mine, I think it is normal that you will notice it more on the shorter irons. The longer my clubs, the less right I would miss it.

The whole G series looks the same with just small changes to the tuning port and other cosmetic stuff. I had a set of G2's and while they worked, I couldn't get past the look or the light SW. One of the few irons that I really noticed a difference.

OP, 3 sets in 5 years, is that all? ;)

I had my set since the fall. Wifey "Santa" was good to me. It's all about the fitting and they play super nice. I like the looks just fine.

I gotta get a leg up on my playing partners somehow - I bloodhound that - didn't even have to count crazy.gif

I personally find it encouraging when a manufacturer spends more time on getting the best performance from something, rather then spending time on making it the flashiest looking.

If you compare the G15 to the G20 you will see weight distribution is different, with more weight near the center-back of the flange. Clearly evolutionary rather than revolutionary, but the difference is more than cosmetic.

1 of my major flaws. I won't order new. I had the G2's in '10. Almost bought a set of Eye3+ last week, but when I went and hit them, it reconfirmed my dislike for the look.

personally I can't stand the look of Ping irons...... However, that doesn't mean they're no good. My dad, a bogey golfer had been hiiting callaway big bertha irons for years. Last year I was able to convince him it was time for a change. He ended up getting a set of graphite shafted Rapture V2's. He absoloutely loves them. The feel is pretty nice too.

I know, I'm quite aware of that. I've seen and hit all the current stuff, including the S56 and Forged, which look nice at pretty much every angle other than addres for me. Just doesn't suit my eyes from address....... I'm quite picky.

yeah, I hate to say it again, but I really don't get what people are talking about when it comes to the looks. sure, they make some dark grey super game improvement irons that haven't been dumped in chrome, but they also have players clubs that have a different look (like the s56). I think it's the "bling" generation or something, because when I started playing the game, the majority of clubs on the market had the cast grey look to them. TA 845s, PING Eye 2s, Powerbuilts, etc. It was only the makers of blades like Mizuno that offered anything different.

Even second hand used equipment can be sent back to PING to have to SW adjusted to your liking. And I believe it's a fairly cheap process. I've known some friends that have sent in a used set to have the lie angles changed as well as the SW and got them back quickly and were very pleased.

No, sorry. .5" would equal 3 swing weights. But that is irrelevant. You can make a club any length and any swingweight. PING makes their swing weights purposefully. The s56 is the same length and the swing weights are D1 off the rack. The same length i20 is D0. It's a decision on PING's part.

I play +1/2 and build the swing weight at d2.

For years, on internet forums, people mistakenly thought Ping iron sets had "light heads". The only reason Ping sets have always swing weighted lighter (C9 is standard for Eye 2, +, Zing, ISI etc...) is that Ping's standrad length is .25 inch shorter than other brands.

For example, a Ping Eye 2 5-iron is 37.75" long and will swing weight at C9.
If the Ping 5-iron is made at 38" (industry standard) it will swing weight at D2.
To this day Ping's standard is still .25" shorter than any other brand.

There are many other OEMs that have standard lengths that are 37.75" for 5 iron. Just look at the specs on their websites... they aren't the only ones.

You are wrong that Ping has always had clubs shorter than all others' "norm", but more importantly, if Ping wanted to swingweight its irons D2, for example, as "standard" it could do so. ALL 6 irons are not structural equivalents of each other, across or within manufacturers. Plenty of manufacturers have sold irons in the same standard lengths as Ping over the years, Pings swingweight lighter because that's how Ping makes them.

Since there are many that like to play over standard length irons, there's probably some benefits to these players. Most other OEMs have to make two different versions otherwise it throws the swingweight off. Don't know if Ping does that but just thought I'd add
