GolfWRX First LOOKs! Titleist Tour Proto D Driver Pics!

Recommended Posts

Hi! I do really like Titleist clubs and my bag is full of titleist products. Two days ago I had the chance to try a couple of drivers made for European tour pros such as 907 d1 and d2 with a lot of different shafts, cleveland hi bores and callaways tf 5s tour. I hit nearly every driver with V2 tour spec. and I have to admit that it feels dead. The d1 is straight but you can not shape the ball. The d2 its a nice looking club works great with an aldila vs proto 80x and matrix ozik. In my opinion the proto is better and longer, besides it is cheaper.

The callaway is very good club, but its not my cub of tea. We tried the version with the square face which they said we are unable to buy, so its bit strange and sound is horrible. But its a solid club and works well with a diamana white board.

The cleveland hi bores normal and tour version at the first look are strange, but with nearly every shaft I had the feeling the ball explodes when you hit it with driver. So you don't have a strange sound or odd feeling.

At the end I went to an launch monitor with a titleist d2 proto 80 x and diamana white d83 x both in 9.5 degree and hi bore normal and tour with identical shafts. All had the same length at 45 inches, only one hi bore tour with a proto was 44,5 inches. First at all that were all superb drivers, but nearly all my life I have played with titleist drivers, I have sadly to admit that hi bores are better drivers. All shots with the clevelands were 25 to 30 yards further. The launch monitor showed me a better trajectory with hi bores and for me it was easier to shape the balls. Now after 15 years playing titleist drivers I am considering to make a switch.

while I certainly won't question your opinion or even overall results, I think you were probably way off with the shafts, lofts or something in the Titleist. There is no way that two properly fit drivers will be 25-30 yds different. I would agree that you may not find a Titleist combination that works as well as the one you found in the hibore but it should be nowhere near a 25yd difference. Just my .02.

yea i would have to agree with that

2 properly fit drivers with shafts that give good launch would not be more than 5-10 yards max difference

probably just never found a perfect combo with the titleist

Have heard the new Hibores are hot though, but 20 yards over a titleist is a stretch because that would make it an illegal face if both were fit properly and spin rates were matched

I hit about 80 balls with the D1 over the last 2 days on my course with Pro V1X...D1 9.5 with Aldila VS vs Cleveland Comp 9.5 with Diamana...It is pretty hard to hook the D1. Ball flies very straight-if anything playing a baby fade is the sweet spot with this club. D1 is easy to vary trajectory. Can hit it high or low but hard to really work it. Def long...I was hitting it 10 yards longer on "best swings" than the Comp and with tigher dispersion. I don't love the NV Proto...Feels like the shaft kicks a bit too much vs the Diamana but the results were good. Sound is horrible and I don't love the look of the head. TBD if this is in the bag as I wan to hit the D2. If I was a betting man though, I think there is a combination with the D1 head that might be a winner. I have tried about 15 drivers-many for more than a day or two since the Comp went into my bag 2+ years ago, and this is the first one that makes me think that there is something better to be had.

Curious to hear if any long time Comp users have found something better, ie HiBore XL or Callaway FT-5...To me the original Hi-Bore was a dud-very straight but I hit my 3 wood just as far as my spin #s were off the charts high.

I just picked up the D2 yesterday with the V2 75 shaft. I demoed it side by side with a D1/stock Aldila VS Proto shaft. The guy assisting me on the vector machine thinks that the D1 sounded funny on impact.

My decision was based on the feel itself. Personally, I could not control my shots with the D1/Aldila combo whenever I step on it. I cannot wait to take the D2 out to the range or the course this weekend.

I demod the D1 and D2 yesterday with the local Titleist Rep. I bombed the D1, but hit it a little too left (closed face). I love the D2, but I am not SURE that it a $400 improvement over my R. The D2 and my R looked almost identical at address (except for the paint color). The rep said that the D2 is in HUGE demand. He said for example some of the country clubs that they normally sell 9-10 drivers a year to are buying 10 in one day at the demo days! He said if you want one (a D2) you had better order it and be prepared to be on a waiting list. He also said that the Demo day orders get proiority over the retailers for shipping. I know he is a salesman, so take this information for what it's worth. In my opinion, and info from a Titleist rep is had to come by.

ps: He hasn't even heard of the TVD wedges!

Sounds like a little salesmanship from rep.I have owned 975d,383k,905r.Demoed D1&D2.If you own an 905r I think the D2 is not worth the upgrade.I would think your money would be better spent getting an expensive reshaft that you were apprehensive to get because of $$$.Now if you don,t have a 905R than the D2 makes sense. The D1is as others have said straight.Miss don,t curve, their pushes or pulls, not fades and hooks. The D1 is different than 905R.Enough to buy in my mind.

I just ordered a D1 10.5 with Vs proto stiff at 45.75" I thought I'd give a little longer length a try. I don't expect much but it's worth a try. I'll have it by Wednesday!

I did find the sound to be ok, and the triangle shape nice, but the D2 has a great look. I did notice a difference in spin and sound between my R, D1 and D2 but probably not 400 bucks worth for the D2. As stated above a nice reshaft might be a better option if you like your R and are thinking about the D2, but I think the D2 is a really nice head, so if you want it and have the cash go for it.

I choose the D1 because I just couldn't pass on the forgiveness.

Anyone hear play an Cally FT3 before this one? Just wanted to find out your experiences. Looking to pull the trigger on the D2 to replace it. I love my cally and also, if I do get it, which I probably will, was it less/more forgiving? I ask this also as this would be my first Titleist driver. I've read all the good things about the D2 but wanted a comparison. Sorry in advance if I missed it on previous posts. Thanks!

I went from the FT3 to the D-1. So far I've played three rounds with the Titleist. First round I went 4 for 12 on fairways hit. Second round I went 12 for 13, third round 10 for 14. BTW that second round was my all time best round. So yeah, I'm pretty happy with the change. I think I lost 5 to 10 yards, but I'll take that when I'm hitting the fairways. My Cally had the stock Aldila NVS shaft, 65gr, stiff. My D-1 has the stock shaft Aldila is making for Titleist, 67gr, 3.9 torque, regular flex. My swing speed varies from the low 90's to the low 100's. Mostly around 94-95, so I'm right in that gray area between a stiff shaft and a regular. Going from the stiff to the regular isn't a big deal for me, especially since the flex on the D-1 feels about the same stiffness as the shaft on the FT3. Overall I've never been this happy about a driver before.

I was playing a Ping G5 driver, when I ordered a Titleist D1 driver 9.5 with a UST 76 gram 44.5" shaft. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This driver is the longest driver I have ever hit. I have a SS of 110 and would hit my G5 about 260 with 10 yards of roll. My first drive with my new Titleist D1 was 275 with 15 yards of roll. All I can say is this club is incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My new driver is so forgiving and long. This is a must buy. You really have to hit this club on the up swing to get it airborne, but when you do it's unbelievable. Must Buy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First to put things into perspective, I'm a mid/high handicapper and anything below 90 on a course makes my day. I also understand the concept that it's the Indian, not the arrow...

Realizing Titleist is about "serious clubs for serious golfers," I still wanted to give D1 a try to see what this 460cc MOI with forgiveness technology is all about. The person at FittingWorks sure reminded me that Titleist is for better players and almost made me felt unwelcome at one point, but I told him we are all trying to improve within our own arena and he agrees.

Anyway so I tried the D1 yesterday with YS-6+ and IMHO I did not get bothered by the triangular shape at all, and my existing driver is a 290cc. For me the bigger head actually made the Driver look/felt shorter, even though the shaft is now 45" as opposed to 43". The triangular shape is very easy to adapt to, after all aren't we suppose to look at the ball, not the club :drinks: I guess I'm not picky as I had no issues with the sound either.

The D1 with YS-6+ gave me great launch and ball flight, and it sure was forgiving. The Aldila Grid came in as a close second, and the ProLaunch Red was definitely too much for me at this stage of my game. They didn't have the Aldila VSProto in a lefty at the center yet but was told it gave a flatter/boring trajectory so probably not for me right now.

As for shaping the shot, at my level I think I'm better off hitting it straight first. So a D1 is on order and we'll see how this turns out, while I work on my swing

I'm glad you like your D1.

Don't be offended by guys who are busy telling you what you should and should not do.

Titleist may be for serious players - but who says a guy shooting 90 isn't serious about his game ?

I'm new to the game (been playing 8 months) and I usually score in the 80's, having only broken into the 70's twice. I play twice a week, sometimes more. I started out with the Ping Rapture with the stiff flex ping shaft. At first it seemed fine, but as I started swinging harder, I started slicing more and more. My swing speed is now approximately 115-120mph. I decided on a whim to try the new Titleist D2 with the Adila VS Proto 65 S flex. It was love at first swing. I literally haven't sliced the ball in 4 rounds of golf. This driver is amazing. The sound takes a little getting used to compared to my Ping Rapture, but that being said, I doubt I will hit my Rapture again. Drawing the ball is so easy with this club, and when i want to play a fade, its usually a baby fade and not the old slice I struggled with. I realize that much of this may have to do with the shaft, but its certainly worth testing this club out to see for yourself. Hope this helps.
