Swing and a miss fellas, I'm pretty sure I could take apart any quote and make it sound bad.

The full context, you know, for people that actually like facts.

"To me, it was like my final in a way," McIlroy said of his win over Westwood. "That was the one I wanted all week and I got. And that's what I got myself up for. Yeah, maybe mentally and emotionally it did take a little bit out of me. But it still doesn't take away from the fact that Hunter played very, very solid golf.

"Even though I threw a few birdies and an eagle at him in the back nine, he still responded well and held on," he said. "I think during the course of the week, he had played the best golf and deserved to win."
Very honest and classy comments from probably the best golfer on the planet. My guess is that many of the people dissing Rory are Eldrick fans and they refuse to believe that Rory is on his way to becoming the dominant player in the game. Sad.
Or maybe they're just fans of other golfers (or golf in general) that really don't think it's in stone that it's already predetermined that he'll be the best golfer on God's earth. Sports is funny like that sometimes.

"Deep down I wanted to postpone that crowning of the No1 player in the world for Rory," the Californian said, smiling. "He will get there. He's phenomenal, really talented. He'll be No1 eventually."

Is that what Hunter said?

:cheesy:

That is hysterical. Well, he showed young Rory the door, great job closing, Hunter.
Hunter has a nice, even demeanor and I think less ups and downs in terms of emotions will serve him well.

As far as Rory...

What a lame set of comments:

"Getting to the top of the rankings is hopefully inevitable, if I keep playing the way I am at the minute,"

-Uh, Rory, you lost in the clutch again. If that is the type of play that brings an "inevitable #1 then that's sad for golf.

"This is no disrespect to the guys in the other semi-final — Hunter and Mark Wilson — but to me, the semi-final against Lee was like my final," McIlroy said. "That was the one I wanted all week and I got it. That's what I got myself up for. Maybe mentally and emotionally, it did take a little bit out of me."

-Seriously, Rory? Do you have any idea how lame that sounds? That is like the Giants losing to the Pats and saying "Oh man, it's so hard and we so tired being on the road so long. We got ourselves up for SF, it took so much out of us...

"To us, the game with SF was our Super Bowl"

Rory, the greats have the extra gear to go the distance and close and don't ever say lame stuff like that.

Here is another take on Rory #1>

Rory McIlroy again fizzles in the clutch:

"So how to explain McIlroy's seventh and eighth holes on Sunday, when he made double bogey from the middle of the fairway and then couldn't take advantage of a Mahan three-putt and made bogey? Those two lost holes were the difference"

Guys, I love great golf. I love Ireland and have been know to play a round or 2 at various links on that wonderful island.

I did root for Hunter but was glad to Rory beat Westwood. It made my Sunday to be able to see every shot he hit, he is phenomenal.

It's just that those comments sound soft.

Sorry lads, this player is the real deal. As with other good
Players, time is on his side. History will tell, if he becomes
A great player!!! And Rory is off to a good start!!!
I don't think that's the issue. We all KNOW he's the real deal and he's got his whole career ahead of him. But there are more golfers in his way than Tiger had and even to an extent that Jack had. He is off to a good start, but the press has put a big old target on his back and daring for people to pull the trigger. Hunter was not afraid to. It's just going to be a tough road for him and certainly not a cakewalk.

If anyone really think it's going to be a walk in the park, is fooling themselves.

I think so. I'm not really the type to need a recognized name to be the forefront of a sport. If the "best player" honors are passed around that's fine by me, so long as the golf is good.

Besides. If you know enough names, they're all recognizable and you don't need name recognition reasons to watch...

Math is a great demonstrator of truth. But as far as golf is concerned, there are people in his way to put it as Mahan did, to "delay the coronation ceremony." (paraphased)

Gator, I don't want to get in a "match" with you. We've been here too long. All I'm saying is that there are golfers that will work overtime to prevent it. He's not out there alone. I believe he'll get there. Either this week or next, but there are too many talented young guys out there, and maybe a few vets out there with something to prove to themselves and everyone else. It's not going to be as easy as everyone says. Once he gets there, that target is going to get even bigger and he'll need that killer instinct to hold them off to stay there.

It's a great time to be a golf fan. I know we'll agree on that! :D

If he keeps playing like he does he'll get there.

He should strive to play better than he is right now. At least putt better, like Hunter did...

It's like watching Real Madrid + Barcelona in football in Spain. There is a mind-numbing predictablility on who will be winning/contending in their Spanish league, even though the standard of football is the best in the world.

Whereas in England you have proper competition for titles, even if the teams aren't as good as in Spain.

That's a similar situation to this in golf without someone like Tiger, but regular competition every week.

Jack Youngblood>>

The Hall of Famer famously broke a leg in the second quarter of a playoff upset of the Dallas Cowboys. Youngblood completed that game, helped the Rams shut out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 9-0, to put the Rams in their first Super Bowl in 1980, then suited up in a near-upset of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl. He then played in the Pro Bowl the next week.

"Over the course of years, many have misconstrued it as a slightly cracked bone or a hairline fracture. That was a totally fractured fibula — about four inches above my left ankle —- snapped like a pencil. I knew it wasn't going to heal, so my only issue was, 'Could I play with the pain?' The doctors said I was crazy, but in the Dallas game, I said, 'Let's go see if I can deal with it,' and helped get us to Tampa."

Cute. I've been here too long for that, just like you.
Here's his quote in context, I don't see the problem because the math says this is true.

"Getting to the top of world rankings is hopefully inevitable if I keep playing the way I am at the moment," said the 22-year-old.

All in good fun, no worries.

All I'm trying to say while yes I agree there are golfers working overtime to prevent it, there is a sizable gap from 3 to 4 in the OWGR. Those players, excluding Donald and Westwood, are going to need a serious string of good events to make that happen. Westwood is playing at the Honda and Doral, but he'll need to make up ground and has proven to not be the best of closers on the PGA. Throw in the way Rory is playing (and how poorly Donald is) and yes I think the odds are in his favor he'll do it shortly. Some people might not like to hear that but that's about as objective as it can be.

I think you're taking this a little too personally.

All Rory intended to say was all week was built up to a shootout between Westwood and himself. After the emotional exertion of that, to pick himself up for another match in an hour was never going to be easy. He gave credit to his opponent and acknowleged he played better.

The comments are just being interpreted in the wrong way.

Ha! I was a Rams fan a fan back when they were in LA.

I just hate to see Rory making excuses and sure it's good that he was honest.

I hope he is not telling himself it's okay that he lost to Hunter and rationalizing that it was because the match with Lee was his "final".

Because there is plenty of talent out there who does not think like that and even if they don't have as much pure talent, they will "eat his lunch" for him.

I agree with the observation that there are so many high quality players these days. I am hardly an expert but it also seems to me that when Tiger ascended, the competition was much thinner than now. And I am by no means slighting Tiger's enormous dominance for the most part. It was and will remain one of the most notable runs in the history of golf.

Rory to me is the best player. Right now the only thing standing in his way is consistency on the greens. You could see this on Sunday. He beat Westwood by making some very long and difficult putts. He lost the final missing similar putts, even shorter putts. And this is what I have seen with McIlroy's game. His putting was sensational when he won the Open. When he doesn't win, the putting simply isn't there.

When every word you say is analysed, taken out of context and then exaggerated you know you are going places.

Rory and Lee were once good friends, that is no longer the case. They put all their effort into beating each other. It's easy to see how mental fatigue could set in after a battle like that. Rory put up a good fight in the final (5 under on the back 9), but Mahan was the best player all week. He deserved the win.

--------------------------------------

If Rory doesn't nab the #1 spot in the next 2 weeks he will likely nab it in the 3 weeks between Doral and The Masters where he isn't playing, since his divisor will drop from 51 to 49 during that period while Donald's will stay at 52. That is unless Donald/Westwood do something special in the meantime.

So he will become #1 by not playing?

I hope this is taken in the objective manner in which it is intended,

Two big matches, the Masters and Accenture, Rory has come up short and not closed.

I am surprised that even his biggest fans aren't a bit dissapointed in the complacency of his comments.

And to not take him to task for stating,

"the semi-final against Lee was like my final,"

is a bit coddling, I think.

Figuratively speaking, Beware the Ides of March. No coronation is guaranteed.

He's more happy winning with Westwood than with a trophy, I guarantee it.

That's pathetically sad...
He took care of his own business.
I reiterate how sad that truly is...

Being a fan of RM and NOT a fan of TW, I see where the difference lies...

The notion that second place is somehow ok if it fulfills some petty grudge-like victory is laughable. You play to win. Period.

Hopefully he hopped on twitter to post about his beatdown of LW and subsequent second place finish...

Do we really need to remind everybody every day what Rory did in the VERY NEXT MAJOR after his Augusta collapse?

Objectivity does not equal singling out segments of quotes and taking them out of context, either. That's called a farce.

Could easily happen. Similar to Westwood becoming #1 18 months ago whilst out injured.

As a fan, I'm not dissapointed because I took the comments in context, and in that context I felt the same as him. I found it hard to get as interested in the Final after the Semi, and I'm not even the one playing.

I'm just glad he is contending in the first place, he is only 22, and he is still learning, and has already closed several important tournaments.

Holing out from the bunker on the 72nd hole in Hong Kong showed he can cope under pressure. The tournament itself wasn't hugely significant, but he had to win to have a chance at the Race to Dubai, so he was feeling it.

I have been following McIlroy since childhood, as in Ireland he has been built up since he was just a kid. I'm just delighted he is already contending at such a high level. I will start getting worried about his supposed "lack of ability to close out tournaments" in a while, right now I am still amazed at how quickly he has got to the top of the game.

So there's your answer.

Am I also to understand, instinct, that you hold Rory responsible for losing, and that no credit is given to Hunter who was unbeatable in every sense of the word?

As we've said Rory was -5 on the back and he only gained one on Hunter, and he needed an EAGLE to do it.

What a world we live in today. Quick to kick the trodden and very slow to grace the deserving.

i'm excited to see golf moving into the Rory McIlroy era, and i don't need the OWGR to confirm what everyone already knows -- he is the best golfer on the planet; it will be nice to have a "legit" #1 that has a major in his pocket; the void Tiger left created a brief talent gap that saw the first OWGR #1s in history without majors -- hopefully, that won't be a regular issue soon. Rory is an amazing talent, has flair, is exciting to watch, and actually is interesting in an interview (most of the time, watching Tiger in an interview is painfully dull, especially since he just wouldn't open up); clearly i'm a big Rory fan -- all that said, i agree with those who call his statement pathetic that his "real" final was against Lee
