In all honesty, some people keep a bit of pudge even when extremely fit.....this is particularly true amongst women as they have higher average body fat (linked to child bearing).....I think that the "chubbyness" you're seeing on Yani is not something she could lose easily or without doing something drastic.....

That being written....even if she was a little chubby due to too many big macs or what have you.....it seems to be working for her.....

Hard to criticize anybody as dominant as her in their respective league. She might not make the LPGA swimsuit calendar, but as long as she beats everybody else, prettier or otherwise, who cares if she has a little muffin top? It's not like she's Daly/Stadler obese or anything...

she is fine.
she needs better food and strength regimen to get the next level.

Knows the secret to the golf swing to own it.

Rory had a muffin top also. Got rid of it this year by hitting the gym. Dunno if that's part of the reason his game is better. Yani's averaging 280 off the tee this weekend. If she improved her fitness, she might average 290 and all the LPGA gals would quit.

the "breaking" part will be her problem. she's already showing signs of injury/wear+tear. IF she stays healthy, she will break records, but that's a big IF at this point.

GC mentioned that Yani gained 7 yds with all her clubs this season. Unreal. The believable kind of unreal, not the "17" kind.

Yani's so-called muffin top became a topic here almost exactly a year ago, when she blew the fourth round lead against Stacy Lewis at Kraft. She noticeably gained weight in the midsection between end of 2010 and start of 2011 but I think it's actually less pronounced this year.

As someone pointed out earlier in the thread, many LPGA players are seeing the Shape and Sport woman (Doddato) for fitness, including some you wouldn't expect, like Maria Hjorth.

This won't be popular but I think Yani can get away with less than ideal midrift fitness because she is the perfect height for a female golfer, 5-6. Several Las Vegas friends and I have quietly used that criteria for a decade, after we noticed a strange correlation between height and winning percentage in the weekly head-to-head matchups. Closer to 5-6 wins, far more often than otherwise logical. I'm mentioning it now only because I'm convinced the offshore joints that set the odds don't give a flip about systems like that. When Las Vegas was in charge the chief oddsmaker literally would take notes when I mentioned an angle on the radio, saying thanks very much you'll never make any money on that again.

A 5-6 or nearby frame apparently enables the top female golfers to have the proper blend of wiry power while not being too far from their work, or an abundance of moving parts. I remember the first post I ever made regarding Michelle Wie on a message board, 9 years ago before I'd seen one swing. It was on the sports forum of a political site, not long after we had stumbled upon the 5-6 angle. I emphasized that Michelle needed to stop growing immediately because she was already far taller than ideal for a female golfer, the equivalent of a 6-6 or 6-7 male golfer, a subset with nary a great player.

It's one of the reasons I've always believed the focus on Michelle's family is happy talk bunk, similar to the type of thing that drove me away from true crime message boards several years ago. Posters were determined to solve the case and embraced ridiculous low percentage flails that ignored the big picture. They'd find one dubious claim and inflate it to "probably" or "definitely" the answer, when it rightfully shouldn't warrant 2% weight.

Anyway, the LPGA Player of the Year for the past 15 seasons has been 5 foot 6 -- Karrie Webb, Annika Sorenstam, Lorena Ochoa and now Yani Tseng. The other briefly dominant player in that stretch was Se Ri Pak, also 5-6. Two offseasons ago when Lorena had retired and there was debate who would succeed her, a very sharp betting friend of mine pointed out that everyone else in the discussion was at least two inches removed from 5-6 -- Shin, Miyazato and Kerr on the low end with Creamer, Pettersen and Wie on the high end. Yani was the obvious choice.

I remember Kathy Whitworth when I was a kid. Carol Mann was taller than anyone mentioned in this post and had an excellent career. Beth Daniel was quite tall. But now that the top tier depth has improved significantly I think it's increasingly beneficial to have the ideal explosive build, and not either power deficient short or overly gawky and dependent on timing. Betsy King is also 5-6. Julie Inkster has maintained form for decades at a nearby 5-7. A couple of weeks ago I spotlighted Se Yeon Ryu and Hee Kyung Seo as top players who would be around for a long while and needed to be in the prime TV pairings. Not coincidental. Among the Koreans they have the proper dosage, Ryu at 5-6 and Seo generally listed a shade above that at 5-7. Both have blown opportunities this year, otherwise they'd be whispered toward the top 5 or 10 in the world.

Lexi Thompson has great length and will manage some explosive wins in big events. Kraft suits her game. I seriously doubt she'll be a consistent force and fulfill current expectation, at 6 feet tall and with scattergun form as a result. Yani is always going to enjoy certain physical advantages over Lexi, along with players who have yet to appear on the scene. Rationale will be found for Lexi, although probably not parental involvement. Taken.

This is one of the more interesting things I have read in a long time. I will be watching this.

As for Yani, she always claims to be working on fitness but to me it is not evident.

Awsi,

Food for thought (maybe we should take it to a new thread?) .. Trevino was about 5'6" and wasn't Hogan somewhere around that as well. Not sure about Moe Norman, but I was thinking he is also around that too. So maybe there is an advantage around that height for accuracy / ballstriking. Course with the men's game length plays such a huge part that we can't used the same quantifier.

What is your take?

I think it's about 5'10-6' for men. It's more a question of not being too short and lack the power while at the same time being well coordinated. 6' woman is not really well coordinated while 6' tall man is still "normal." Junior girl I work with is 5'7" and there's a tiny bit of "disconnection" in her movement but she produces a lot of power in her swing. At 5'6" she'd be better short game player I think.

it may be, in part, because women tend to have more height (proportionally) in their legs then men. So a woman who is 5'-7" would wear pants with a 32" inseam, and a man 6'-0" tall would also. That means as a tall woman, you are more likely to have the "center" of your body height being more than 50% of your height. If you can keep your fulcrum point closer to the ground, you're going to be able to stay balanced more easily.

It's not how...it's how many
