Taking apart a spider putter

Hi guys, im hoping to purchase an original spider putter (i prefer the agsi insert, anyone else found this?) but want to ghost the metal frame and leave the main body and legs black. just wondering if there is an easy way of disassembling the putter to make this easier or whether im just gunna have to spend an age masking it up carefully?

No, there's no easy way.

Here's how it goes:

1. Remove the sole plate. The best way to do this is to first remove the badge on the sole plate. It's on with double sided tape. Heat it with a heat gun and use a razor blade to flip the edge up then pull it out with needle tipped tweezers.

2. Drill a hole where the sole plate goes so you can stick a curved piece of metal in and pry it out (an Allen wrench works fine as you'll need one later anyway). Heat the edges all over as well, as it's held in with adhesive and a bead of elastomer.

3. Remove the Allen screws holding the two pieces of the frame together. These may have hot melt built up around them, some do some don't, they're sloppy with it inside. If it has it around it, heat with a heat gun and twist it out with the Allen key (don't get this very hot, there's 2 gaskets you need to save between the two frame pieces and you can melt it). If the hotmelt is there, I usually just drill the center of the screw out and use an ez out to remove them and replace them later.

4. Remove the insert. It is possible to save the insert if you're careful. There is an elastomer bead around the edges. Soak it in mineral spirits to remove this elastomer easier (it won't damage the face, it will soften the elastomer). Peel it out. Now, the face is held in with double sided tape. Heat with a heat gun from INSIDE the cavity. This will prevent you from overheating the insert and melting it. Once you have heated for a bit, use a razor or scalpel blade and run it down the edge of the insert until you can flip it up enough to get a mini screw driver under it to pry up enough to grab and peel it out.

5. Remove the 2 Allen screws behind the insert (the head side is under the insert). Again, of they're stubborn, you can buy more, just drill the centers out and use an ez out to remove. It's likely they'll have hot melt built up around the exposed threads on the backside. Heat it to get them out easier.

Once the body and frame is apart, remove the two gaskets between the two pieces VERY CAREFULLY. They will rip and tear if you're not careful as they're on with double sided tape that TMag uses that's like plastic weld or something, it's sticky as heck.

Congrats, an hour or so later (it takes me about 30 minutes now, first one took about an hour and a half because id never done kne and did it by feel and looking and head scratching with a little tip here and there from LaMont)it's disassembled. You can buy the 4 replacement screws for the Allen screws for under $1 at Ace hardware.

Yes, they're a PITA to disassemble.

Stop drilling holes in your spider sole plate! 
1) remove face

2) remove one of two screws behind face

3) using compressor, blow air into hole and sole plate should pop off with air
