JBP, how many time have you played wolfdancer? I'll agree that the first time out there it feels a bit unfair but once you get a little course knowledge that feeling goes away. The only green that I find borderline unplayable is number 6, the short par 3.

well, for the money, i'll probably never play it again...too many other courses i actually enjoy, and enjoyed the first time i played 'em...but i do get what you're saying. :)

Isn't it kind of late in the season to be punching greens? What kind of grass/greens do they have?

 

Falconhead is all bermuda grass and they actually stopped overseeding a few years back. It stays bermuda year round and I do believe they're doing this because of all the rain we've been getting.

What is the latest word on Blackhawk? Anyone played it in the last 60 days? I have heard good things...but wanted to confirm with the Austin experts :)

dang...some of these courses on golfnow dont do 1-4 golfers, wanting 2 or more, which limits my ability to play at those courses and spend some money on range balls and food, etc... terravista and star ranch friday afternoon, for example...

I just checked Teravista and it's showing 1-4 for Friday tee times. I've never seen Star Ranch offer a single tee time on GolfNow.

what grinds do you dudes play here in South/Central Texas?

 

I find the fairways are either firm or less firm, but rarely "soft" like I saw in Colorado or elsewhere.

 

I was thinking of dialing my bounce back a couple degrees on my wedges because I feel with non fluffy sand and not the softest fairways ever that a 10* gap, 12* SW, 8* LW would be great. But I am having a hard time picking grinds. I come in steep for sure.

my L, S, G wedges are g20's, which are wide sole with what appears to me to be little bounce, and they work fantastic in tight lies...my pw-8i are ping karstens, which are similar to g20's...i also have a steep swing, which probably produces the high flight i get...working on a more 'sweeping' swing for winds...

i dont know if any of that helps...i need all the help I can get! lol

My 52º and 58º both have 8º of bounce. I just switched to a 58.08 from a 58.06 and would've stayed with that combo, but Titleist doesn't offer it in the SM6. Bunkers and fairways are firm at the courses I frequent, the rough is not all that rough and it's rare to get a fluffy lie. I'd say your GW definitely has too much bounce for this area. Your SW should be okay unless you're playing munis on a regular basis, which I know are like hard pan. The LW is perfect.

 

Are you a digger or sweeper? I don't know if your a Vokey user, but their site is pretty good for an online fitting. You could always go to Golfsmith on I-35 and hit a bunch of wedges on the outdoor range.

actually, my gap has become my go to club all around the green, and doesnt appear to have much bounce at all...just wide soled...love all my pings! my issues are my lousy swing, especially when i swing too hard...

...and i spend so much time at gsmith i have valet parking and a cold towel, plus a shoulder rub by vanessa on sundays...

the only thing i'm looking to improve on is driver, and i've got one coming from 3balls in a coupla days...same ping rapture, but in 9*...everything else is set (for my game)...

one tip, folks...when it's 100 degrees out there, and yer in a 4some...play ready damn golf!!!!!!!!took 4:20 today, and shoulda been 3:30....dumb starter was an idiot...coulda sent 2somes out, but made us a 4some, and it was a mess...

I never use to watch the LPGA, but Brooke Henderson has me interested. I hope she knocks Ko off her pedestal soon.

Heading to lake Travis next weekend and looking for somewhere to play. Wolfdancer is about 70 miles each way from the lake house so that's out. Tried horse shoe bay which was still about 40 miles but I would have made the drive in a heart beat. Can't go there since I won't be staying on the resort. Looking for a course that's somewhat as nice as those two but public and close ish to the lake

Falconhead fits your bill. Barton Creek isn't too far from the lake either, but it's pricey.

Not in my opinion. I got married there and got fees for my entire group the morning of our wedding for $75 and even that was too much for the conditions. We played Crenshaw, which I was told is not as nice as the other courses, but I wouldn't even considering playing there again.

Really? Must've changed their policy, cuz it wasn't always like that. Falcon head gets rave reviews. Definitely one of the top public courses in Austin/Central TX.

falconhead is a great layout...but, and that's a big but, i actually like kizer better! and it's dang cheap! yeah, the greens are a bit iffy, but so is everyone else with the weather we've had...
