It just needs to freaking rain....or we're going to lose a lot of golf courses this year.

Update....played Shadowglen on April 5. It's definitely coming around...tees and fairways are pretty good since they overseeded...but the greens are still behind...and really bumpy.

Still a $20-$30 golf course right now.

Ah, thanks for the update. It's a little far for me to begin with so I just wanted to see if it would be worth the ~hour drive out there. I need to branch out from playing Falconhead every weekend, but it's just too close, too convenient. And my other favorite in Avery Ranch might as well be a road trip...

I think I'm just going to have to suck it up and make the 30-45 min drive to other courses... Not ideal.

It'd be an even longer drive for you but I am a member at Cimarron Hills in Georgetown (Jack Nicklaus signature course). I play a couple weekends a month and wound happy to get you on if interested.

anyone here play Morris Williams after they reopened? I like it a lot... playing from the black tee's is a challenge @ 7300 yards (especially if it is windy).

Yes...I played in a tourney out there the first Sunday after reopening. It was pretty nice...upgrades were well thought out.

Was out there the other day though...and its starting to look a little crispy. We need some rain, so all of that new bermuda sod they put in will survive through the summer.

I wanted to give a couple course reviews and get this thread going as an update on course conditions:

I played Teravista a couple times in the past week. It's in really good shape. Greens are a little bit slow, but they're rolling nice and true. I'm sure they'll firm up in the next couple of weeks with this heat.

I'm hitting up Crystal Falls again tomorrow. That place has become one of my favorites now. It's funny how much my mind has changed on that course. There greens should be in good shape now and fully recovered from the punching a few weeks ago. I shot well out there a couple weeks ago and still have yet to break 80 there. It's becoming a challenge!

Teravista's greens were sandy when I played there yesterday. Crystal Falls' greens are still sandy and bumpy as well. And people need to start repairing their ball marks out there, it's getting ridiculous how many I fix per hole.

This is great. These updates are definitely helpful in knowing the status of course conditions. I finally got to get out and play a round at Lions last week after a solid month of just range time. I hadn't played out there in like a year so it was a good time. Fairways are like concrete so your drives just don't ever stop. Greens were in decent shape, but I've definitely gotten used to playing Falconhead.. so they seemed slow, but for a muni, can't really complain.

Played White Wing in Sun City, Georgetown yesterday. The greens were very fast and very thin. Ball marks were difficult to find on the greens because they were so hard. Fairways were in good shape as usual. The range balls need to be renewed. The sand in the bunkers are the best around although I wish I didn't have to find out.

Played Avery Ranch yesterday. The course is in really good shape tee to green. The only thing I noticed was an excessive amount of ball marks on the greens. New....Old....the ball marks were all over the place. I fixed several on the first couple of holes, but there were so many it started to get old. Avery Ranch could hire a guy to go around and fix ball marks as his full time job.

Played Falconhead on Saturday and the greens are still recovering from being punched a couple weeks ago so they rolled much slower than usual. Other than that, the fairways and bunkers are in pretty good shape. Gotta get out and play Avery soon. I love that course.

Played Avery Ranch May 31..and it was in the best shape I have ever seen it...no kidding. Lots of grass...greens were amazing. If you haven't played it recently, you should.

Played Shadowglen June 7 for $17, had the place to myself on a Friday afternoon....and was pleasantly surprised at the conditions. Golf course has alot of grass on it....tees and fairways were really good. Greens still a little bumpy and slow...but they always seem that way at Shadowglen. Great conditions and great pace of play for muni prices.....go do it.

Played Falconhead Sunday, June 23...and something is up with their greens. They were verticut and baked out...like they were not expecting the 100-degree heat this week. And they are about to lose #7 and #8 greens....very bare in large areas.

Rest of the course is really good....just buyer beware. I wouldn't pay more than $30 or $40, or you will be disappointed.

I just read that ColoVista (in Bastrop) will be reopening sometime this summer. The course is being remodeled and run by Billy Casper golf.

For those of you new to Austin....the course is two completely different nines. Front nine wide open and "linksey"...back nine tight and in the woods.

Was a pretty good course before it closed...but it is a ways out...and it will be hard to pass by WolfDancer.

I lived in Austin many years ago and played ColoVista a number of times...was sad to hear it closed. This is great news it might re-open! Man, I need to get back there as it appears there are many more great courses in the area.

To all the people from Austin, if you had to pick between Avery ranch or crystal falls in terms of condition, layout, I guess overall, which one would you pick? I need one more course for an upcoming golf trip in a month, thank you.

On a,side note, I keep hearing wolfdancer is under $100 but all I can find is $150 on weekends unless you play late. Is that right or am I missing something. I would like to try wolfdancer but $150 is over budget.

I would pick Avery Ranch over Crystal Falls mainly because of condition. I like CF, but their greens have been bad the last few times I played.

I have no info. to offer on Wolfdancer.

keep an eye out on GolfNow and EZlinks...lots of weekend specials pop up Thu or Fri.
