Golfers in Austin, TX

Played riverside this morning and it’s actually in pretty good shape. Greens are small and running fast

Kizer greens are awful right now. Their advisory time for the recovery was obviously BS.

I'd give it a miss for another 2 weeks at least.

 

Not being from these parts, I don't really get it, but 3 weeks ago Kizer's greens were in great shape and running true, then they do this maintenance. Hopefully they're 1/2 decent by December.

Conversely, Bluebonnet is in decent nick right now and I was down at Landa Park the previous weekend and their greens were the best public greens I've putted on in Texas this year - bar a dead bit on 9.

I'm obviously talking to avid golfers considering everyone in this conversation is on a golf forum, but I can't help but wonder why y'all are playing such crappy courses. Lions, Kizer, Riverside, Bluebonnet? I haven't played any of those in years......Probably like 20 years with the exception of Lions, which I played once in the past 5 years only because they were suppose to be closing by now. IMO, they are total hack courses, meant for Austin hipster crowds at best. There's much better options!

In no particular order:

• I'm not close-minded and living in the past
  
• Not keen on Lions, but the others you mention are fun courses. IMHO Kizer (current maintenance aside) is one of the best value munis I've played anywhere.
  
• Only 3 privates hold any interest to me and they are all no goes(AGC/ACC I am a few raises/lottery win/marriage to socialite away. Onion Creek on a flood plain).
  
• I like courses for their shot values,variety, terrain they are on, not for the neighbourhood they are in
  
• I like to walk, so will play them more regularly than other fun courses I play like Shadowglen, Delaware Springs, Avery, and Cowan, which are not as walkable.
  
• Further to that, I prefer to not play in housing estates - although places like Avery and Cowan blend the two well IMHO - but take a place like Teravista. I can only assume when they finished the master plan, someone reversed which part was supposed to be the golf course and which part was supposed to be the roads and cul-de-sacs. Worst course I've played in Texas.

uh oh...thug gonna be real mad you dissed terravista...not sure why he feels he has to put 90% of the posters down by ripping courses they/we like...i went thru this with him a year ago, and it got so nasty i just decided to stay away for awhile...why ruin a great thread with boorish behavior?

I haven't played Teravista (just one "r") in nearly a year since I don't live there anymore. Pretty much Berry Creek, the Sun City 3, Avery and Cimarron Hills these days. Gotta add some form of debate to the boring muni hack courses that seem to be the only courses discussed here.

what you consider to be debate is debatable. if so many here enjoy talking about the 'hacker' courses, what is that to you? why do you feel the need to put down the people here? sure, some of those courses are not in quite the same condition as avery, for example. but i played it again recently on a rainy day when the range was closed, and i, once again, found only a coupla holes really interesting, and would much rather play black hawk because, to me and what i like, it's far more interesting to play...and mo willy, kizer, lions...when i play lions it's like i stepped back in time, and can imagine hogan teeing off...

liking these courses doesnt make me a hacker. i know what i like from a course, and those courses offer what i like. and i can play almost anywhere i want.

LOL. Calling Lion's "Boring", but bragging about playing Sun City or Berry Creek is hilarious. Muny actually requires some strategy to play well, both Berry & the Sun City 3 couldn't be more straight forward courses.

 

Also I'm a member at Teravista, and it is the worst course in central Texas. If not all of Texas.

Well, I certainly identified some of the Beto supporters on the forum.

 

WTF strategy is needed to play Lions. Hacker strategy? It's 5800 yards of dry pan fairways, fuzzy greens and pebble filled bunkers. It's condition rivals only Hancock. An average player can tee off with a long iron on every one of the par 4's and still make the green in regulation with a short iron or wedge. If you do chose driver, 4-5 of the par 4's are driver and then a chip shot from just off the green. There's not many places to lose your ball even with a wayward shot in either direction. Doesn't get much more boring than that, unless of course you're only playing partner is your girlfriend to whom you're trying to impress with such massive length. Saying Lions is a better course than any other course in the area is hilarious. There's a reason they want to build on the land there and it's not only because the land is valuable, it's that the golf course isn't.

When did bashing law enforcement become such a trend? Society is so incredibly stupid these days, they insult the cops for their profession alone and think Lions golf course requires strategy to play. SMDH!

I'm a mess, hardly! I simply make a statement about people talking about the same ole courses on this thread over and over and once again you take offense. I didn't tag you in the post. I didn't call you out by name. It's obvious we don't see eye to eye on anything golf related and I'm okay with that. It's time for you to accept it, so you don't get suspended again for breaking forum rules. Post new stuff, go outside your typical comfort zone and up your life experience on the golf course. If you like the routine of playing Austin muni courses then so be it, my post wasn't meant for you, it was meant for the person reading this thread as a result of an upcoming trip to Austin (vacation or business). That person sees this thread and thinks, "wow...I really need to play Kizer, Lions, Mo Willy, Bluebonnet when I go to Austin." What a horrible experience that would be for someone's first trip to Austin. You may not agree with the last sentence, but the majority of "elitist" golfers in the Austin area would.

BTW, played Delaware Springs for the first time the first week of October and the course blew me away. It's condition was second to none. Very good value for the money, IMO.

This SA boy knocked The Hills and Avery Ranch off his Austin list this week so far.

 

Both great courses and I had a blast at the Hills in the cold and wind.

 

Both courses in good shape except some suspect bunkers at Avery.

i'm law and order all day long. not sure what the williamson county comment was about. i have very little experience with officers (except for the incident at the HEB parking lot i witnessed...and a neighbor getting run down and killed one morning while at the scene on 35 where lightning had struck (were you at that? he was in a coma for several months)...but then you start insulting everyone and the courses they enjoy playing. maybe you've SMDH'ed yourself too many times, lol...

i played delaware springs once...had a few ok holes...too long a drive for that particular course, altho we did see a snake that had climbed halfway, straight up, the trunk of a tree next to the cart path!

was able to get two rounds in over the Thanksgiving holiday. One at Shadowglen and one at Wolfdancer.

 

Played Shadowglen in the morning and course was in pretty good shape. The overseed is starting to come in. Some of the teeboxes are a little worn, but overall course was in good shape. Greens rolled smooth and pace of play was excellent for a weekday morning.

 

Played wolfdancer on Saturday and it was the busiest I have ever seen it. Pace of play was still good though. Course was in great shape for this time of the year I thought. overseed coming in well

Apple is the best followed by Slick, them Ram IMO. Not sure of current conditions since its winter golf.

Been about a year since I was out there and I think they did some work on one of the courses since then. By reputation I feel like ram rock gets the most hype. I found all of them enjoyable. Tough to pick a favorite. All of them have some great holes and some sort of blah ones and conditions were good across the board.

Bags are the worst thing to ho due to shipping costs and I don't need to take another bag with me to California, so...
