Affordable Public Courses

I may be relocating to Tarrant County, TX. My Son lives in Colleyville, and I will get an Apartment close by. I see that there are many, many golf courses in the area, but I also see that the prices are very high compared to the Greens Fees here on Long Island, NY for Seniors during the week. One thing I have to say about NY is that with so many people, and so many courses to choose from, the fees are very low during the week. Week-Ends are another story. Can anyone shed some light on good rates for a 70 year old golf nut in the Tarrant County area? I have played Texas Star a couple of times, but it is expensive (By NY standards for a public course.) :help:

what is your definition of expensive? some suggestions:
- bear creek golf club - 36 holes, tight fairways
- riverside golf club - south of airport on 360. fun course winding along the trinity river
- grapevine municipal - 27 holes. usually in pretty good shape
- hawks creek golf club - west of downtown fw, by carswell air base

if you don't mind a drive:
- whitesone golf club in benbrook
- split rail golf club in aledo

Thank you for your response. Expensive? I played Cowboys in Grapevine which is 6 miles from my Son's house. I thought I'd have to get a bank loan to pay the greens fee! I play a lot of golf and live 7 miles from Bethpage Black. The money they charge for the Cowboys golf course is rather comical to me. What can possibly justify that cost?? :rolleyes:

i've yet to play cowboys, but i do believe it is all inclusive except booze (still, even if you say it is a $75 round of golf, i don't know that you could possibly rack up $100 in food and non-alcohol beverages. from people that i know that have played it, have said texas star is just as nice.

I would also suggest you start subscribing to IdealGolfer dot com for the DFW area and take advantage of lower green fees as they are presented at courses that interest you.
There are some real bargains to be had if you pay attention to it.

+1 on the IdealGolfer suggestion.

You could also look for some of the public courses that offer "all you can play" memeberships. Mansfield National (a bit south depending where you live) offers an annual fee of $2k for all-in golf (you pay cart fees).

Grapevine has a similar program. It's $3k per year and includes carts and range fees. The 27 holes are also a lot of fun.
