Question for those with a 64 degree wedge

NevinW

Recommended Posts

I play a course with fast greens with lots of undulations. Many elevated greens and lots of wind. Getting over the green usually means trouble. This weekend I played with someone who had a 64 degree wedge and it seemed to work well for many shots that cause us trouble and I am thinking about getting one. My pitching wedge is 46 and I currently carry 50, 56,60. What is the gapping of wedges that you use in carrying a 64?

Change the 60* with a 62*. 4* of spacing between wedges is very redundant and the 62* will provide that little extra over the 60* for those shots you are looking for without going to the extreme of a 64*. You might be pleasantly surprised with the 62* since it's a bit more manageable then a 64*.

The Cleveland 588 62* fits what you are looking for to a tee!

I carry 5 wedges (PW @ 47, then 52, 56, 60, 64). Full shot for a 64 is 85y.

Love my 64* Callaway wedge, highly recommend one.

I played with a guy that used one this weekend as well and I'm really considering trying one when I get back from vacation in a couple of weeks.

I currently go W - 50 - 54 - 58. I was thinking I'd most likely take out the 50 - 54 and replace with a 52 and then go 64.

I've tried them in the past and never had much success with it but I think I tried to use it too much, which in turn created my struggles. It needs to be about 20ys in and speciality shots around the green only. No more airing it out 65 yards, hahaha.

Almost 50% of your bag is PW thru putter.. You must have some major gaps on the top end of your bag?? I love the 64 as well.. Once u dial it in.. It's a weapon

mine are 46, 50, 56 and 64.

i gotta say, the 64 was a tough club to learn but once figured out, its my club for anything and everything (not sandy) inside 60 yards.

don't get a 64 just because someone did well with that club. if you do want to get one, get a low bouncer for those hard fairways you mentioned. also, and this is really important - find one that works for your swing. i did not like the 588 64*, but love my CG15 DSG 64 as its extremely easier to open up.

I have a similar setup to someone above. 3wd, 19h, 5-9, pw.42, 51.12, 56.10, 60.08, and 64.07. I use my 64 at least once every 9 holes, love that club. I took out my 4 iron since I can cover more ground with my 19H. Its a tricky club at first, but when you get use to how flat it is, its a REAL weapon. I love to open that club up and make it flat, take a 3/4 swing with it and watch it just go straight up then land and not move. I'm actually more consistant with my 64 rather than my 60. I'm thinking about getting rid of the 60 degree and adding another Hybrid or 4 iron, my 56 does anything and everything that the 60 cannot

I just added a 64 to the bag and I took out my 4 wood. Current setup is driver, 19H, 24H, 5-9, 47, 51, 55, 59, 64.

For me, the 64 provides more opportunity to save a shot than a 4 wood. It is definitely a specialty club for when I am short sided and need to land one extra soft.
Interesting... So even with a 59 you carry a 64... Good to know.... Is your 59 mid/low, mid, high, low bounce? How about your 64?
55 has 12 deg of bounce. 59 and 64 both have 8 (both Ping Tour S Rustique "TS").

My 59 is my go-to around the greens, except when I need the 64 to land one really soft.

My bag was made up similar. It's a trade off for sure, but I'd rather have the tools to be accurate from 125yds and in, than more options from 200+yds and out. Makes more sense to me.

Nevin, I play PW(47), 52, 58, and 64. The T-grind on the vokey worked best for me. I did flatten it 3 degrees though and it works great. I think its important though to have a versatile 58 degree wedge and to be able to hit a lot of half, three-quarter, and full swings with each wedge.

Top of my bag is Driver, 5W, 3h. As another poster said, it's more important to have the tools to get close, rather than the tools to *try* and clear a hazard 260 out or hit a 560y par 5 in 2.

I think it`s a waste brain power trying to figure out exactly what gaps everyone needs....The clubs you use should be about the conditions you have at the course you play and the shots you have to make....if you play one course and not many all the time it`s pretty simple ..what shots are you consistently confronted with....lobs that have to stop quickly or are you chipping to undulating greens or sever slopes...whatever it is you have to have the club that stops the ball where you want and that`s all about the loft you use...of coarse the ball you play figures into this also...

The wedges I have to choose from are 50,51,52,54,56,58,60,64,68....depending on the course I play and the irons I choose to play that day... I can pick and choose what I want...If I`m playing a new coarse I carry standard wedge set up PW...54/56 Sand wedge and 60

I've tried a 62 and a 64 - and carry a 62 at times. I just found that a 64 was inconsistent for me. For some reason, those 2 extra degrees mattered. Don't know why - but I've tried a Cally 62 and 64, and a Vokey 62 and 64 - always prefer the 62.

I tend to go 50 (gap), 56, 60, but when a course has small greens, I will use the 62 instead of the 60.

I carry 47*-52*-58*-64*

The 64* is a useful tool. I use it for most green-side bunker shots, and any time I need the ball to stop quickly. My home course greens are small, sloped, and quick. Short-sided is usually jail. Short sided and above the pin is even worse. The 64* is a real stroke saver in these situations.

That being said, I only use it when I am confident it is my best (or only) option. I have no idea how far I can hit my 64*, as I never take a full swing with it. If the ball has to fly more than 50-60 yards, I choose a different club.

I took the new 64 degree wedge out last night for nine holes by myself and I have to say that the results were very encouraging. It worked really well for the over the back edge of the green, short-sided chip shot but also worked well for the garden variety chip shot. It lands and just rolls out a few feet. For some reason, perhaps because I take a little bigger backswing with it, but I don't seen to get as yippy with it so there was consdierably less fat and thin chips. The other interesting thing was how well it worked out of the bunkers, not just for the "5 yard right next to the pin in a bunker, want to get it up fast and get it to stop" shot but also the "pin is on the right and I've pulled it into the way left into a bunker and now I have 30 yards sand and green between me and the pin" shot. The harder you swing in the bunker, the higher it goes but not much farther. It was interesting that it worked better than my 60 degree wedge in similar circumstances.

Will definitely take it out for real this weekend and see how it goes. If it goes well then there will need to be some adjustments with my other wedges. it may not be the club to take to Scotland but for around here it may turn out really useful. - Nevin

64 is a weapon once you learn how to use it, there is no shot you can't pull off (but you will get some ridicule from others) my golf pro even fun of me until i got myself into trouble by flying a green. then i flopped it over a tree to 6 feet he said "that's awesome!"

I kind of use my wedges as iron extensions (i take full shots) so i play 48,54,58,64. If i had to do it over again i'd swap the 58 for a 60 with higher bounce. But I go Driver, 3W, 5W, 4-9, 48,54,58,64 i'm thinking about getting a 23 degree hybrid to sub for both the 3&4 iron.

I have yet to actually put this in play during a round. For how many times I'd use it in a round, I just can't find a permanent spot for it.

Fun club to play around with, though
