I Cant stop hitting it FAT lately!!!

Guys I need some advice!

 

I think going to the range that has the carpet is really messing me up... I've been going there lately and then I went to hit at a range with grass yesterday and I was hitting at least an inch or 2 behind the ball on soooo many of my swings.

 

I've always had a problem hitting down and taking a divot after the ball, which caused me to start sweeping more... Even then I had a good amount of chunked shots.

 

Any videos you can suggest or drills that will help me impact ball first and trap it like you're supposed to?

 

These chunked shots are adding a ridiculous amount of strokes to me round. =(

This might come across to some as bad advice but for me, when I have a specific problem I typcially try to practice and emphasize the opposite. If I'm hitting slices, I'll go work on hitting the draw and relearning that feeling of coming from the inside and having the face turning over through impact. If I'm hitting it low, I'll go work on hitting high shots. Etc.

I sometimes have problems with hitting it fat. When I'm hitting it fat I'm typically lunging down towards the ball during the downswing (FWIW I'm a low ball hitter and a digger, usually). To work against that feeling, I will address the ball like normal, perhaps address the ball towards the heel a little, then for 2-3 seconds before I start the backswing I will focus on standing a little taller (as I do this the club naturally comes a smidge closer to me realigning the ball with the sweetspot of the iron), almost feeling as if the toe of the club is touching the ground slightly more than the heel, and during the swing I'll make a conscious effort to stay tall and sweep the ball off the ground with minimal divot.

You can do it if you go put in the work. I've read stories of Tiger practicing and he hit could damn near hit dozens of balls off the same small piece of grass because he was taking it off the ground so cleanly with no divot at all. He would practice like that because during competitive rounds he would have a tendency to get too steep and come down into the ball to aggressively. So he was practicing that different or opposite feeling.

That's what I'd do. But then again, I'm a big believer that the key to finding that pure swing is in the dirt. Hours and hours of practicing that is

Among the most common causes of the fats is lateral motion ,especially at the hip area, going back.Lateral motion going back among other things changes the low point in your swing and if lateral motion of the head also occurrs,forces your eyes to recalculate the distance to the ball .Practice this "depth of turn drill" in the mirror and try to make a similar move going back.Notice that Dan's head and the outside of his left hip move very little laterally going back.Located at !3:30 of this video
