PROJECT X BLACK

INTRODUCTION:

There have been a handful of reviews posted over the past few months on the latest offering from TRUE TEMPER - the PROJECT X BLACK. I came across this on YouTube and thought it would be a proper introduction to my writeup.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTV2rueiHpo

TECHNOLOGY:

"The new Project X Black features reduced weight from the original Project X graphite for explosive power while preserving critical tip stability and low spin performance. Featuring proprietary Dual Torsional Control, Project X Black reduces spin rates at impact for optimized peak trajectory with flatter descent angles for maximum carry and roll."

What this means to you... Right now the biggest catch phrase in golf is SPEED. If you can increase your SPEED - DISTANCE will follow. For the most part I find this to be true. However - what if you already have good speed? What happens when you decrease the weight of a shaft in attempt to increase your distance? For me and many others it all comes at a giant sacrifice - DISPERSION or ACCURACY. Using proprietary materials and engineering TRUE TEMPER has found a way to add stability to the tip of the shaft - allowing them to decrease the overall weight of the shaft without sacrificing the element of control.

LOOKS:

Never a deal breaker if the shaft performs, but when you combine a great looking shaft with performance - I'm hooked. The overall look of the PROJECT X BLACK is very nice. The main PROJECT X logo is not too large or distracting at address in the 6:00 position. The carbon weave is very subtle along with the undertone flames and small PROJECT X logos - until it hits the sun and then it pops.

I would really like the looks of this shaft more if it were just a little less busy in the sun. If the shaft were matte black - embossed PROJECT X logo - carbon weave and perhaps some etched flames this would be the prettiest shaft of the market.

TESTING:

Before I hit this shaft i was very skeptical. I really liked the PROJECT X 7a3 and 8a4 drivers I played a couple of years ago - but they were 10-20+ grams heavier. The lightest shaft that I have played in a driver has been my FUJIKURA MOTORE SPEEDER TOUR SPEC at 69g - and there are times where it is just too light and gets lost in my quick transition. Recently my shaft of choice has been a UST VTS SPX 7x. The weighting seems perfect and I feel the club throughout the swing.

When I looked at the specs of the PROJECT X BLACK 7.0 / 3.7* / 62g, I was wondering how much I would be giving up going to 60g shaft.

This is where the shaft surprised me...

I did the initial testing with my RBZ TOUR before switching over to the r11s to see how it performed in a head with different characteristics. I was very impressed with the shaft and how it balanced out in the head. It wasn't too tip heavy as some tip stiff shafts are - and it wasn't too butt weighted. I have a very difficult time if I can't feel the head of the club in my transition. I will give the disclaimer that I was fully warmed up and just finished a lesson where I ended with driver. My swing was grooved and I had a very good mental picture of what my ball flight, shape and distance was with my gamer. The PROJECT X BLACK 7.0 was very smooth through the swing and loaded much like my VTS. The flight, shape and trajectory was again almost identical to a shaft that was 10g+ heavier. Ball after ball landed in the same spot. The odd thing about the shaft was that it did feel much lighter, yet it was very stable and maintained a nice balance of feel. I found that if I jumped on the driver a little the shaft was able to keep up and still perform. I also found that against my 6.2 TOUR SPEC I actually gained a couple of yards in the air without sacrificing AoD - it didn't drop out of the sky and ran when it hit the ground.

When I changed the RBZ TOUR out for the r11s the ball flight was much lower - and I lost yardage and control vs. the VTS. I didn't have my weight kit with me or a swing weight scale so I wasn't able to checkout what the club was swing weighting out to. I do know that my RBZ TOUR head is a little heavier - my guess is that the lack of static weight and proper swing weight is crucial to have a lighter shaft play correctly in any driver.

CONCLUSION:

I really like the PROJECT X BLACK 7.0. I would change the graphics slightly, but with the right head - this shaft is very stable and long. I am still in the balance to making the complete change to this shaft - as I tend to play 18 holes better with a heavier static weight driver. I did find myself over swinging on a couple of holes - due to the weight or lack there of with the club. The extra weight is more of a reminder to be patient in the swing, which tends to keep the ball in play and much closer to the hole.

If anyone has any questions to how this may compare to other shafts please ask them. I do not feel this shaft has got the appropriate response as a stock shaft in the CALLAWAY or PING offerings. I'm not sure if those shafts are "made for" or not - but this in the true form is very good.

In addition to the initial review I will be getting some TRACKMAN numbers soon. I have been a huge proponent of TRACKMAN, but have been taking a break from numbers and focusing more on the LIVE performance of equipment.

Great review swanry. I too like a heavier shaft as my shaft of choice has been the Motore Speeder 7.2. I have the PX Black 7.0 in my Cobra ZLE and have been very impressed with the characteristics and feel through impact. It plays very long and smooth. I have a very fast transition and was worried I would lose the feel of the club head coming down. That was not the case with the PX Black 7.0. For the golfer who likes stability this is a great shaft.

I played the 7.2 last year and loved it... How would you compare the dispersion and control of the 7.2 to PX 7.0 black? Distance? Sometimes it's better when the person reviewing the shaft is making ding comments :). Thank you for adding your input!

played yesterday early morning with this shaft and have some interesting results. the weather has been great around here and much more mild than the rest of the country. high yesterday of 85 - when i teed off it was 57 and very windy, which is "a" typical for tri mountain golf course. a short intro on the course. not extremely long, semi link style course, with wind being the major defense. about five years ago the county put money into the irrigation system and rumor has it they have free water. this course use to be incredible in the summer when it would dry out. firm fast fairways, greens, etc... now it is not uncommon to have balls not roll out in the summer - especially in the morning before the sun and wind drys the course out.

HOLE #01 - tee shot is slightly uphill for the first 275 yards then it levels off. with no warm up and a pretty good right to left cross wind - hammered one up the right side holding the wind not moving an inch. i was very impressed with how the ball flighted - very penetrating flat trajectory.

HOLE #05 - tee shot call for a slight draw and if you hit it past 280-300 it can catch the down slope and get you to the bottom of the slope. summer prevail is downwind a little to the left. again hammered it leaving myself 40 yards out to a tough back pin placement - very penetrating flat trajectory. the hole is a shorter par 4 at 379 and was playing 20 yards up. if the course was playing firm this would have caught the green.

HOLE #07/09 - par 5's with lots of side wind. one severe right to left one severe left to right. either way you need to hit straight tee shots. i overswung a little and pushed both tee shots to the right. both hits were not perfect but i felt the shaft staying very stable despite the slight heel strike. no excessive curvature, that i have had with other shafts. key point again - very stable.

HOLE #10/12 - solid shots up the right side perfect position left to the green.

HOLE #13 - par 5 into a strong head ind. the best tee shot of the day by far... which held the wind and flight perfectly - leaving me 200 yards to a back pin. again the ball did not move an inch either direction. very penetrating flat trajectory.

HOLE#16/18 - sub par tee shots both slightly off the heel with wind that could definitely put your ball into trouble with miss hit slightly. the shaft stayed very stable throughout the swing.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:

didn't think i would like a shaft this light - but it performed very well and was super stable. if it had a couple more grams added i wouldn't think twice.

with the sun really coming out - the graphics were way too much and somewhat distracting. i mentioned earlier that a matte finish would be the ticket on this shaft with perhaps some etching. gloss with graphite weave and flames were too much, yet the performance will keep me playing it...

probably one of the most stable shafts i have hit on the market.

a couple more quick thoughts...

really need to get this on a swing weight scale. i think even with my heavier head (RBZ TOUR) the PX BLACK is playing at a lower SW than i enjoy. if i get it to d4 it would increase the feel and allow me to keep my swing more in check.

this shaft has received some mundane reviews - and i'm trying to figure out why? is the PING/CALLAWAY PX BLACK a "made for" or the real deal?

for me this shaft plays more like the original prototype graphic x7a3 (before the flame or tip stiff extra graphics). very tight. very accurate. very flat flight.

I've got a RBZ Tour 9 with the PX Black 6.5. Mine swingweights a little low as well. I'm at D1 at 45", and was originally thinking of putting some hotmelt in it, because I usually play my drivers at D4-D5. I was in a hurry to go try it out though, so I just figured I'd put it in later if I thought I needed it. That was 6 weeks ago, the driver remains at D1. In the mean time, I've had some of the best driving rounds I've had in years. I've won the long drive flag 4 times in the past 4 weeks in the leagues I play, which I don't think I did more than 1 or 2 times all last year. When they put it on an into the wind hole, it's almost unfair to everyone else with this thing.

No idea what the deal is with these shafts in the Pings and Callaways, but I have a friend who tried my driver and then bought an i20 with the PX Black and isn't really in love with it. Just doesn't seem to have the same pop as my RBZ Tour for some reason.

Good Review Swanry..! Thorough as usual of course. How does it feel in the transition and downswing? I know when I tried the Kai'li in the 60X the ball flight was great, dispersion was solid, but I felt tentative and I never want to feel that way in a driver!! So went 70X and love the feel...around 68grams installed. Does this feel better than the old PX shafts, they really weren't my cup of tea...felt good, but a little vague for my overall feel tastes.

the wind shots is where i really see the advantage. i have played three high end shafts in the rbz tour - all with good success, but none as accurate as the PX BLACK (didn't think this would be the case at all). i am going to adjust my r11s head adding some weight and see what that does to the shaft. i'm thinking only good things :)

not sure if my answer will deter you or encourage you... it feels a little GRAFALLOY BLUE with more load - even at 7.0. the BLUE was a very stable shaft - think it has been at least ten years since that shaft was introduced or so and there are a lot of guys on the euro tour still using them. go figure... they play a variety of courses, most of which trajectory and control are a premium.

i do think that it feels better than the PX of similar weights - however i did enjoy the feel of the x8a4 in a driver.

jumping all over the place - but is this the best feeling shaft i have hit - NO. is it the prettiest - NO. does it flat out perform - YES.

Great review! This shaft reminds me of the PX 6A4 that I've played in a SF TP long hosel for quite a while and still have. I'm currently playing an R11 8* with a Speeder VC 7.2x for reference. For me the PX beat out a GD DI 6x tipped .5". Not in feel but in performance. I also have a PX 6A9 which is tip X stiff and lighter than the A4 in that it's 63 grams. Maybe a proto of the Black?

Great write up. I really liked the PX Black in my TA Razr Fit. If I didn't already own a Kai'Li with a Callaway tip I would probably still be playng it. The stiffest that Callaway offers is the 6.5, I think if I had a 7.0 it would be even better. I didn't find a lot of difference in ballflight between my Kai'Li and PX Black. I was pretty much ending up in the same spots on the course for the most part, with the Kai'li being a little more accurate. I wouldn't say they feel the same by any means, but it's all subjective anyways.

I think the Ping/Callaway versions are made for as well. I received my PX Black 6.0 and it feels much better and tighter than the Ping PX Black 6.5 pull that I installed in a Razr Fit. Much smoother and felt almost as stiff as the 6.5 with .5" of tipping. It launched a little lower than my DI-6s, but distance is almost spot on between the two. I think Swanry is right when he questions why people have had negative reviews on this shaft. They need to try the aftermarket version and will be amazed at the difference.

Interesting thoughts, Swanry...may have to see if I can get TM to add it to their fitting carts...preferably in the 6.0 and 7.0 versions!! Give it a run....

i also wanted to pass this along to the rest of you on WRX as i received an email from TRUE TEMPER - part of the message read:

much like ALDILA did with the PHENOM - the advice i would give shaft manufactures is not releasing a NEW shaft as the flagship shaft for a NEW driver. i'm sure the $ end of things makes the agreement good for both sides, but i like to see a shaft become popular or in demand (like the original PX) before it gets thrown in a brand new OEM offering.

I believe the Ping/Callaway offering is a made for, as the graphics are slightly different than what we received. I'd like to try this in the 6.5 versus the 6.0, as I believe the 6.5 would work better for me.

The PX Black in the Ping I20 and the Callaway RF Tour are the real deal. The Callaway version from last year's Diablo Tour head was made for.

Played again yesterday and can officially say this shaft the the straightest/tightest I have tested. Pick a line and swing. Two rounds not one ball left. Only miss has been when I have been worried about going left and hold it off. If I consciencly remind myself to trust the line and know its not going left its perfect. Lower and flatter than I have hit it in a while - but incredibly long. My brother is killing his driver right now - very confident with his swing and can work it both ways. He is flights it higher than I do now with his current setup. If he hits first - my ball is noticibly lower and flatter. I keep thinking his will have carried further - when in reality they carry about the same - most of the time the PX will have carried it further. If the fairways weren't so watered I would really find out good this shaft is... I'm hitting it further on a lower flight. With roll - wow... Can't wait! PX BLACK + CHAMBERS BAY = Perfect!

SIDE NOTE! My wife is due today with our second! Waiting game...

So you clearly work for True Temper, were you merely blowing smoke when you made this comment at the live event? suddenly its we went from "100% authentic" on 5/14 to "made for" two months later. Just wonderng why the two comments and which is the truth?:

Dr. JP-

Multiple people share the True Temper account on Golfwrx so its not always the same person answering every post or hosting every chat. I misread the original question about which Callaway driver with PX Black had the authentic PX Black shaft. The new Razr Fit Tour does use the real PX Black while the Callaway Diablo Tour driver uses a made for PX shaft.

Sorry for the confusion,

  • 2 weeks later...

i have a couple more rounds under my belt with this shaft - and it keeps getting better. as i mentioned in previous posts, this shaft has one of the tightest dispersion patterns of any shaft i have hit - regardless of weight (RIP ALPHA 80x prototype being the other shaft). when you start trusting your equipment and don't worry about the results - you start swinging with confidence. the more confidence you have your thought pattern begins to change. its not "am i going to hit the fairway" its "i'm not worried if i do miss the fairway".

yesterday i caught myself attacking holes with driver instead of holding back or steering the ball. i was swinging through the ball very well - no hold back. did i hit every fairway... NO. but they weren't missed by much.

i truly believe that this 62g shaft will open the door for other people to play a lighter shaft - and only gain in the process. i plan on making a TRACKMAN run here soon and put this to the number test. regardless - it is the winner on the grid iron - course tested and firmly in the bag.

Well - I tried to kick this shaft out of the bag after one bad driving round... Ok, well maybe the drivee was the problem, but I was quick to pass the blame. A range session with my r11s/motore speeder 6.2ts and things were good. The next round was so so. Finally, picked up the rbz tour / PX BLACK and was torching it. This combo is too good to kick out. Perfect balance point, feel, load, kick... It just works. It is firmly back in the bag - and I'm off to work out the swing kinks later this week! For a shaft that I had heard mix reviews about - I know I have a shaft that is flying under the radar.

I put a Project X Black 7.0 in my new RBZ tour and love it. My dispersion has come way way down, and it really launches the ball with no spin. Feeling a lot more confident, even dropping down in weight. Unclear about distance as my new RBZ head really launches the ball higher than my old R11 and it has been too soft recently for roll, but so far so good. Ball really knuckles up there.

Have yet to hit one in a really bad spot with it in 3 rounds, and I used to hit balls OB all the time.

identical to me.

not sure that this shaft is longer than my MOTORE SPEEDER - as it is probably neck and neck on course (and i feel that i am pretty dialed in with my specs), but it is straighter and easier to control.

Same experience here with a callaway RF TA and a project x 6.5. Flat and piercing trajectory and finding more fairways. It is not quite as long as my Adams 9016 ( nothing seems to be longer) but still gets the ball out there. This combo feels really good in my hands and I too normally like a 70+ shaft.

For me the PX beat out a GD DI 6x tipped .5". Not in feel but in performance. I also have a PX 6A9 which is tip X stiff and lighter than the A4 in that it's 63 grams. Maybe a proto of the Black?

I am interested to hear a little more about your testing of the Project X Black vs. the Tour AD DI if you don’t mind sharing. I have not really seen anything out there on this particular comparison, so your feedback could be very helpful. I am particularly interested in how the launch angle and spin compared.

I wanted to add some additional comments to my question to give some context for the decision that I am trying to make.

I have an AD DI 7x in a XTD Super Fairway 3T, so I am already familiar with it. I hit the Project X Black 6.5 in a 10.5 degree G20 the other day and was averaging 107 ss, 10 launch angle, and 3100 spin. These numbers were the best out of everything that I have been able to try out, but I would really like to get the angle up more while decreasing spin or at least keeping it around 3,000. The AD DI seems to spin a little too much at times for me in my 3 wood, but I do really like the launch angle and ball flight. I also have a Fubuki Alpha 70X in my R11 10.5. I have had control issues with this combo, and the launch is still lower than I would like. I have now come to realize that the R11s is just has too much of a low launch tendency for me, so I have decided to try out something else.

I have already ordered a 10.5 Anser with a Project X Black 6.5. The Anser actually came in the other day but Ping messed up and sent it with the blue Project X version and not the Black, so I might have an opportunity to change the order over the next day or two if I wanted to. I had decided to give the PX Black a shot because the Fubuki Alpha is already similar to the AD DI, so I had thought about getting an extra Anser tip to compare the two shafts and see where things shook out from there. However I am really thinking about taking this opportunity to change the order to the AD DI.

My assumption is the AD DI would be a little higher launching than the PX Black with the same spin, but I assume that the PX Black would have better control and a tighter dispersion. I am fairly confident that the AD DI would be a little lower spinning than the Fubuki Alpha with a similar launch angle. I think I could live with any of these shafts, but I am thinking that the AD DI would probably be the safest bet. I am on the fence here, so I was looking to see how others would compare the AD DI and the Project X Black.
