Most disappointing player of 2012 (so far)

Recommended Posts

I've got to say that Gary Woodland has my vote for biggest disappointment of the year. Not even in the top 125 on the money list at the moment. Everyone was falling all over themselves last year talking about his ridiculous bombs off the tee and his great touch with the putter. I think pretty much everyone expected huge things from him this year.

Anyone have any idea what's gone wrong with his game? Any other big disappointments this season? I'd say maybe Watney as he has had a big dropoff. Certainly not as bad as Woodland but I would expect more than 57th on the money list from a guy with Watney's talent.

obvious one could be McIlroy,
I was a bit shocked by K.J on and off ability...

I was hoping for bigger things from Blake Adams

golf is hard. that's what makes consistent winning so amazing. props to guys like furyk, mickelson, z johnson, stricker, etc. Golf is full of guys with ridiculous talent that just doesn't materialize and Woodland will be one of thousands that never meet their potential. assuming we don't hear from him. but yeah, he's very young and working on new things from what i hear. I bet he'll be fine.

he has an excuse, with his baby on the way....but yeah, after he finished 2nd in the Masters and US open i thought he had a chance to literally be the best player in the world. I mean he could do everything.

Still can, but less then stellar since then

I say it's Rory. Far and away. All the promise. All the hype has produced almost none of the accomplishments that were expected, thus far. He's young and all that, but the bright lights are pretty bright right now. The media is not your friend when you're not winning.

Phil has had a less than stellar year thus far.

That was my first thought too, but then I remembered the 63 he shot at Pebble, every shot of which He Who's Name We Do Not Speak had a front and center view.

Are you sure he's the most disappointing? Isn't that a little harsh on good old Phil? :derisive:

For me...Nick Watney.

Some good wins last year on good courses and then...?

I actually kind of expected him to figure in on a Major this year, but there are 2 left still so...

Rorys performance is majors has been poor. For a defending US Open champ.

Embarrassing.

But he has won a lot of money, won once, 2 2nds, 1 3rd, 5 top 10s.

The bar was high for him and he has not come through, but he has time and its not the "most" disappointing.

KJ maybe?

Phil has a victory, a runner-up, and a third in a major. The TOUR lead in Top Tens is six, and Phil has five. While certainly not his best year, this year hasn't been bad for Phil.

1st: Anthony Kim - Dude sucks at Pro golf right now, 188th in scoring average...
2nd: Gary Woodland - Agreed, Butch Harmon thought the guy would tear the world apart, not happening so far.
3rd: Ryuji Imada - He's been a solid player for the past 5 years, this year though his best finish is t62nd.

Rory - The guy should win a lot more often considering all the hype!
Phil - So inconsistent.
Tiger - t40th at the Masters his worst finish ever as a pro!

Yeah, I'd go with Nick, followed by Jason Day, Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia.

Well given that stat, I guess we really can't throw Rory in this conversation either...

I think I probably have to go with Woodland. I feel like last season, Watney kept his name in the mix consistently, closed a few, and choked a few away, so I was interested in seeing if he would end up being a good player who got hot for awhile (someone of the Kenny Perry type, perhaps), or prove that he was ready to enter the upper echelon of golf's hierarchy. Still can't say I've made up my mind 100% on him. Sergio comes to mind after his back to back wins, but I haven't really been paying much attention to his game, so I can't really say.

Hey, leave Darren alone...the guy got the only thing he really wanted after he lost his wife. Now he can go back to what he loves, drinking pints and fooling around on the golf course...ahhh what a life.

In Gary Woodland's defense hasn't he battled an injury this season?

I think Rory is only a disappointment in the sense that he got off to a promising start at the beginning of the year but then had those string of missed cuts. I attribute that to him being young and getting distracted by all the off course publicity.

For veteran players its gotta be Nick Watney. I though with his two wins last year that he would make the leap this year but he has regressed. For the rookies it has to be Bud Cauley and Harris English. I'm sure both will have nice careers but they were so heavily touted its hard to believe someone like John Huh has managed to win before either one.

I opened this thread just to say Woodland. Clearly many beat me to the punch.

Personally, I've really never been all that high on Gary, so I really haven't seen him as a disappointment.

Sure, Gary can flat out bomb it. And his irons are towering. But he's kind of one-dimensional. He doesn't alter his flight very much, and he's a bit inconsistent, especially off the tee.

Gary also has never demonstrated short game artistry, and his game management isn't eye-catching. Overall, Gary really isn't much to get excited about.

Gary has one huge thing going for himself. He is a true athlete. Physically gifted. A guy like that, if he works his tail off, can develop into something.
