Tiger hit that 5 iron out of a gulley, with a 3 foot mound right in front of him.. 200+ yards, Then Bubba CUT a 276 yard 3 iron that landed pin high, but rolled off the green to the left. In 56* weather. I thought i was delirious, I had to back up the DVR 5 times.

Those were two of the best shots i have seen all year... when the camera panned around Tiger and showed how high that mound was.. it was knee high, i was thinking how I couldn't get an 8 iron over that, it was nearly 3 feet in front of him. The 3 iron by Bubba was just ridiculous, all carry.

You should hear what it sounds like in person.

Its even more impressive off of a driver. It sounds like some one set off a grenade...and the ball HISSES from the spin as if flies downrange like a major league fastball.

The only other player whose ball sounded anything like that was David Duval back when he was one of the best in the world. It wasn't quite as powerful and pure....but his was close.

Yeah i have heard about it from some friends who saw him around 2000 (tiger). They say the same thing.. It kinda scares you a little, like the first time you hear a race car start up in person. Like " OOOOOHHHHHH, so that's what it sounds like"

Like a Tyson punch, like a pedro Martinez fast ball hitting the mitt, a Karch Karily spike or a Ray Bourque slapper, the sound is unmistakable and different from their peers.

I was lucky enough to walk 18 with tiger, during tournement play inside the ropes in 2001 often
10 feet from him doing shot-link, every shot was flush, even the ones that he may have missed. I might make that sound 3 times in an entire round.

Nice Karch reference ^^ Spit... Agree with both of you, it's just different. Sergio was paired with him, and he goes after it just as hard (similar irons forged blades), it's just different. It's almost a signature sound.

I would love nothing more than to spend an hour being right next to Tiger watching him and listening to him hit balls! I have said it to my girlfriend about why I love to watch him play, his ball just SOUNDS different than everyone else.. she thinks I am crazy, golfwrx (except for a select group of people who think Tiger isn't very good) knows otherwise

Yep me too. I've got a friend who was on the Cal golf team in the 90's, he has seen Tiger a bunch in person. When i asked him if he noticed how his shots just "sound" different.. he just started shaking his head... then tried to tell me about it, but was searching for how to describe the sound. He finally goes, "dude you just have to hear it in person.. it's not real"

Tiger kind of lost that sound off his irons for a while, but whatever he is doing with his balance and swing these days, he is compressing the s$%t out of the ball.

Standing right next to Tiger when he hit a long iron from the tee at St Andrews in 2005 is something I'll never forget.
I didn't see it but I heard it. The reason I didn't see it is because it was so hot off the club I couldn't follow it, but the sound was like no other and I've been to a lot of golf tourneys & I love Faldo, Norman, Monty, Westwood et all but Tiger on form is tops.
Looks good so far this week!

At PGA events you can sometimes position yourself down range 50 or 100 yards and practically underneath thier drives. I think this is where you really experience that whistle cuase the ball is still climbing. I was positioned this way at the AT&T Pro-AM on I forget what hole at MPCC. The tee was elavated and we were directly underneath their ball flight. Thick coastal air and all the drives were whistling like MAD. It definitley woke you up. Just awesome.

You can also experience this at your local Muni. Just ask your big hitting friend if he wouldn't mind hittng drives over your head. :swoon:

Now...

...anybody here still want to delude themselves that they play the same game that the pros do??
[/quote]

Not really, but there still seems to be plenty of people who think they can't shape the ball unless they're playing blades. Can you imagine how much more accurate Bubba would be if he played blades instead of those 2nd rate cavities that just want to go straight?

Agreed they are pretty "blady" for a Ping iron but the insert has the same effect as a cavity

The "crack and fizzle" is the most impressive thing about watching a pro play golf, for me.

It just crazy trying to visualize what the ball is doing at that moment.

Ain't happening on any of my shots, that's for damned sure

There are three things that TV/YouTube does no justice that you have to be there in person to see/hear.

1. Augusta National
2. Sergio & Tiger hitting an iron
3. The guitar tone of Metallica live

I never really thought certain pro's shots made hissing noises more so than other pro's. If they have similar ball speeds, they should sound the same. I definitely agree though that the difference between a pro and the scratch players on this site is insane though. I am probably going to be crucified for saying that. Someone will come on this thread and say "I hit the ball JUST LIKE THAT, just not as often." Right

according to the golfwrx gurus, not much difference between pro and scratch ballstriking wise. Only the shortgame and putting are different.

I'll never be convinced of that though. Ever
