I think it was at the chevron tournament last year. Where it was Zach vs Tiger, the commentators were saying the difference between the sound Tiger made compared to Johnson. Don't remember it word for word but something like "if you took a person who had absolutely no knowledge of golf, the guy would pick Tiger to win just on sound of impact alone".

Now...

...anybody here still want to delude themselves that they play the same game that the pros do??
I'm sure there a lots of WRXers who can hit shots like Bubba and Tiger with regularity, just wait for it....they'll be posting soon.

according to the golfwrx gurus, not much difference between pro and scratch ballstriking wise. Only the shortgame and putting are different.

I'll never be convinced of that though. Ever
+1 on that.

Although I do subscribe to the theory that the vast majority of touring pros are at a very similar level in terms of ability, and what separates them is mental.

You should hear what it sounds like in person.

Its even more impressive off of a driver. It sounds like some one set off a grenade...and the ball HISSES from the spin as if flies downrange like a major league fastball.

The only other player whose ball sounded anything like that was David Duval back when he was one of the best in the world. It wasn't quite as powerful and pure....but his was close.
Yeah i have heard about it from some friends who saw him around 2000 (tiger). They say the same thing.. It kinda scares you a little, like the first time you hear a race car start up in person. Like " OOOOOHHHHHH, so that's what it sounds like"
I never really thought certain pro's shots made hissing noises more so than other pro's. If they have similar ball speeds, they should sound the same. I definitely agree though that the difference between a pro and the scratch players on this site is insane though. I am probably going to be crucified for saying that. Someone will come on this thread and say "I hit the ball JUST LIKE THAT, just not as often." Right
to bring the analogy full circle, it's the difference between your hot street car, and a NASCAR... "yeah my car has 650.." Then you go in the pits at a winston cup event, and realize maybe i do, but it doesn't sound like that. Reminds me of the first time i saw Jordan come to Oakland an play GS.. He drove on Mitch Richmond and threw it down, i was in the 10th row... and yeah, it sounded different. Like someone hitting a canvas tarp with a bullwhip.

With Tiger i can tell it's happening through the TV, thanks to the modern coverage, but yeah... different.

I quite liked the 6 iron Luke Donald hit from 148 yards on the 14th

Every day golfwrx turns more and more into a massive circle jerk about how good the pros are. I especially love the logic "I can't do that therefore nobody on the internet can". I guess if you could make the same noise with an iron as Tiger or hit a 260 yard 3 iron you should be on the PGA tour...

I never said anything about my own game. You don't think there are amateurs out there who hit the ball harder than Tiger and can pull off all the same shots? Hitting the ball hard != being good at golf, for some reason golfwrx struggles to grasp this concept. PGA pros are good because they can consistently hit the shot they need to

Tiger hit that 5 iron out of a gulley, with a 3 foot mound right in front of him.. 200+ yards, Then Bubba CUT a 276 yard 3 iron that landed pin high, but rolled off the green to the left. In 56* weather. I thought i was delirious, I had to back up the DVR 5 times.
Yes after watching Bubba slice one into the deep trees...I still think I can play with them.

Yeah actually, I don't think there are. Otherwise they'd A) be on the long drive circuit or B) be on one of the tours.

I'm with you on this one. Long game is the difference for sure. Witness this: http://www.columbia.edu/~mnb2/broadie/Assets/broadie_wscg_v_200804.pdf - page 8. Pro1 vs Am1 (Am1 appears to include a scratch amateur, but includes some who are a little worse). Pro1 is making up 9.3 shots with the long game and only 2.2 with putting and a further 2.1 with short game. Unless the contention is that a scratch amateur is a worse putter than a 5 handicap then I think it's reasonable to suggest that those splits should be reasonably constant.

Incidentally, when Tiger was dominating between 03 and 09, it was mainly on account of his long game: http://www.columbia.edu/~mnb2/broadie/Assets/strokes_gained_pga_broadie_20110408.pdf - see page 18.

When Lacava started caddying for Tiger, he made the comment that he thought the Fred hit the ball solid, then he got a first hand view if Tiger. He said Consistently he'd never seen or heard someone hit the ball more solid.

Coming from someone that has caddied on tour that long and in some amazing Ryder cup and presidents cups and Majors, that's pretty Impressive.

I did notice he never mentioned his putting!.

my uncle once saw jack nicklaus hit full swing practice shots with his irons almost 50 years ago in the 1963 westchester classic..

the ground SHOOK everytime he hit down on his irons....much like a mini-quake!!

PS..his 2-iron trajectory was like the 6-iron--or was it 9-iron?-- trajectory of his fellow pros...
