North Dallas Golf Courses

I recently moved here from the San Diego area. I read online about the golf courses to get an idea of where to start. I am a +1 hcp and have played almost all the courses in San Diego and many other great courses throughout California. In a month I have played Woodbridge golf club, Old American, Firewheel (Bridges), Heritage Ranch, and The Tribute. When you read a review it is important to know what is important to the person who is writing the review. For me the golf experience is primarily about how interesting the golf course is and how challenging it is. My favorite course by far was Old American. It was fair, challenging, interesting, and in good condition. Also the least crowded probably because it was the most expensive $125, but you do get free refreshments and snacks. It's a course that I could play everyday and not get bored. I used every club in my bag and the par 3's, 4's, and 5's all have variety. The views of the lake on some holes adds to the peaceful feel plus virtually no houses is a plus. My second favorite was The Tribute ($99). The course was in good condition, nice practice facilities, and the pace of play was good. It is so wide open it would be boring to play everyday and a course that copies links courses needs to play firm and fast not soft and slow. It's ironic that a course that is designed to play firm and fast plays so soft in the Dallas area. The Bent grass greens are nice, but the wrong type of greens for this course. Hertiage Ranch ($78) would be next on my list. The $78 did include a $20 food voucher that I used on a very good Sunday Brunch. The course was in good shape and interesting, but not memorable. Practice area was weak for this area comparatively speaking. The holes were not all that memorable but there was some elevation change which so far is not easy to find around here. The tee shots required you to shape some shots. Next would be Woodbridge Golf Club ($31 twilight w/sleeve of ProV1's), This was a deal. The course has a variety of holes shaping both ways and I used every club in my bag. Playing from the back tees is a must to get the most from this course if you are a single digit hcp. Decent range, putting and chipping area for those of us that actually practice. Finally Firewheel was boring and too short to enjoy, but a good course for 10-20 hcps. My journey will continue and I hope this will help some golfers who are new to the area or visiting.

like callawayjay said, you need to check out texas star in euless. texas star is got some serious length from the tips, elevation changes, and shot shaping.

IMHO, The Trails of Frisco has the best layout of any public courses (besides Old American) in the North Dallas suburbs....BUT....the conditions are generally ok at best and the traps are just god awful. The course would be an excellent higher priced public or private course if they could spend the $$$ into the maintenance and upkeep. Its worth a round if you are looking for something new to play...just play in the morning as it gets slow most afternoons.

I always loved Woodbridge, can't understand why it has to stay so cheap (but thankful that it didi). 5 years ago it was usually in good shape. I'd love to try Old American and your review has me wanting it even more.

I like Indian Creek - Creek course. It was a good budget course 5 or so years ago, but I hear they've raised prices. Avoid the Lakes course there like the plague, though.

Plano was my home during most of the 90's.
Are there still any money games on Friday's? Different course most every week.
$100 skins game. You might want to dig around and find that adventure.
Dallas has a lot of good golfers.

Another vote for Indian creek - creek course. It is in great shape right now and will force you to play virtually every club in your bag.

The lakes course there is a great layout but unfortunately is in terrible shape.

Grapevine municipal is a great test as well, give that a try as well as TPC Las Colinas.
