Ogio Recoil Stand Bag Review

Recommended Posts

So you want a big stand bag?

I've been embarrassingly OCD on my bag hunt for the past 6 months. I'm coming from a few year old Callaway XTT Lite stand bag, which was very light and looked great but the 6 way top with 2 full dividers just drove me nuts. Clubs were tough getting in and out, pretty much every time. Nothing worse than hitting a bad shot and then the club won't even go back in!

My quest took me from the various 14 way options (SM Four5 and Hybrid, Ogio's Grom and Recoil, the Nike Performance bag), Ogio's Woode bags (my first choice) and then on the opposite end of the spectrum the Sun Mountain 3.5 and the Sun Mountain/Titleist Lightweight Bag. The divider system was #1 for me, and I figured it was either 14-way or the complete opposite - 4 huge dividers. I definitely wanted full length dividers as well which ruled out Ping's Latitude and Hoofer models. I will say that if the Latitude's putter well and other dividers were full length that may have been my choice.

What sold me on the Recoil/Grom diamond top was the way I could set the clubs up in a way that works equally well on the cart and standing on its' legs. The Sun Mountain setup, for example would likely put the driver and woods in front of the other clubs and the putter in a tough to reach spot. With the Recoil I have the putter at the top and the irons circling the woods/hybrid, a neutral setup. An Ogio rep had told me this was the way the top was designed but I've seen many others do it differently. So far I like it.

So I was in between the new GromXX and the Recoil. I'd like to walk more but it's not too common in my area. I really only walk my local 9 hole executive course when I squeeze in a quick practice round. But I figured that if I was going heavy I may as well go with the Shox straps to neutralize the weight. So far I like the straps though I've read the mixed reviews here. They really make the bag feel like a normal weight bag, and while it bounces a bit something I've always done while walking is keep my right hand on the top cuff of the bag. This really minimizes the movement, and Ogio has two sturdy handles at the top which help even more. I also use one strap sometimes and hold the main grab handle - the Shox straps make the bag a manageable weight for this as well and the handle is very rugged. I also like the shape of the Recoil better than the GromXX which I found kinda boxy.

In full disclosure, I used the recent 40% off coupon at Ogio to make this $144 bucks and free shipping. That really sealed my decision as I wouldn't have paid over $200 for this or any bag. At the price I paid this bag is a steal. On to the pics.....

Right side has three zippered pockets: a fleece lined valuable spot at the top, a large rectangular pocket and the typical one that runs down almost the whole side:

Ball silo:

Valuable pocket is divided, great for separating phone from keys:

Valuable pocket has a slot behind in to allow a cart strap to go behind so you always have access when on the cart. Great idea:

One small pocket above the ZBP, I found it great for tees:

Standard setup on the left side - an insulated drink holder, a scorecard sleeve and a decent size zippered pocket:

Bag stands up great without the legs:

Very comfortable hip pad:

Loaded up - driver, FW's and hybrid in the center:

Cart bag position:

Ball pocket loaded. I have about 16 balls in here, 12-16 is probably a good number:

That's it for now. I will update the thread with anything that comes up, good or bad. Let me know if you have any questions!

Great review. Especially with the pictures. Wish it would've been up while I was deciding. Luckily I went with the same bag in the Charcoal/Burst pattern with the same discount. Unbeatable at the $144 shipped price. Really glad I did. Absolutely the best bag I've ever used on a cart (TORQUE strap is my friend :D) and I've walked more with it since getting it than I have in the last year (a total of 36 holes. HAHA!) and love it for walking too! I knocked the "leg clip thingy" down some to allow the legs to come out more and that made it even better. Don't like the legs to be so vertical.

All around a great bag.

I might adjust the leg thing as well. I found with the bag empty, the legs were sorta sketchy as they don't open as far as I'm used to. And that's what always scared me when I messed with Ogio's bags in stores. But when it was all loaded up I didn't really see it as an issue anymore, even though they weren't as wide as others. The weight really seems to help.

Great review! Thanks for taking the time to take and post all of those pictures.

I've used an Ogio Exo for the last 7 years and it's holding up great, but I've recently thought about a 14 way divider bag.

If I'm trying a new club, I'll often just throw it in with my regular 14 clubs. Are the slots big enough to put an extra club or an umbrella in this bag with the other 14 clubs?

Is it easy to get a ball out of the silo? The reason I ask is mine also has a 3 ball silo, but it's open on the sides. If the ball isn't coming out easily from gripping it in the front, I can just reach to the back and push forward to pop the ball out.

There are times when I put clubs back in my bag that I have to lift a club from an adjoining slot because it's pushing in on the shared divider. Does that happen with this bag?

No problem on the review. Gotta give back to the WRX community somehow.

- Slots can handle another club (I've accidentally put two into the same slot before), might be tight if you use midsize grips though. There is an adjustable elastic strap behind the valuables pocket (check out the 3rd pic from the top) for holding an umbrella. Can't say I've tried it as I generally don't carry an umbrella.

- Haven't really used the silo too much but the balls seem to pop out without much effort. I think I've read someone complain that this new 3 ball silo leaves indented marks on the balls but I haven't seen that yet.

- The only thing that would need adjusted to insert clubs might be the headcovers but it's not a huge deal. That's only when it's standing on the legs, there's no problem at all when everything is vertical on a cart.

Thanks for the review and pics. I might have to consider this bag now, I was set on getting the Nike Xtreme Sport IV bag. I walk maybe 80% of the time, and only ride when I play with my dad cause he has his own cart now. Sounds like the shox straps really help with the weight, and from the video I saw on the Ogio website the bounce is supposed to be there to help absorb the bag weight as you walk. The only real problem I can think of at the moment compared to the Nike bag is the extra 4 pounds it has, don't know if it will be a problem when walking 18 holes or more.

Great review and excellent pictures. I've had an Ogio Grom for about 7 years now and have been looking for a replacement. I haven't been really happy with the current selection from Ping or Sun Mountain. Like the OP said, if the Lattitude had full dividers I would be in. This review kind of convinced me that this bag is probably the way to go. I have the same options and pockets on my current Grom, but on the Recoil it seems more updated and planned out better. Now to find this elusive coupon...

Not sure if you're talking about the 40% off coupon a lot of us used a few weeks ago that appears to be dead and gone, but the thread here below mentions an eBay seller accepting offers ~$125 with free shipping.

In all honesty, if I walked 80% of the time I probably wouldn't go for this bag. I'd probably have a Titleist Lightweight or SM 3.5, or a Hoofer. On the Recoil box it actually says "Recoil Hybrid Bag", so like the Sun Mountain Hybrid it's almost a cart bag with legs. Not quite that big but you get the idea.

When the bag is loaded and you pick it up by the grab handle or go to put it in your trunk, it's definitely heavy. But once you put it on your bag that extra weight is really neutralized. Still a bit too much for the hardcore walker though, in my opinion.

First time walking with the new bag today - this is a heavy bag. Shox straps kinda bugged me a bit but I think I need to adjust them as the bag was bouncing off of my rear the whole time.

Still love the bag but it's in the same exact category as the Sun Mountain Hybrid bag - a stand bag built for cart use and very infrequent walking. For that, it's great.

OK, quick update as I rode with it this weekend.

I LOVE this bag for riding. The Torq strap works wonderfully - I strapped it up and grabbed the top cuff to see if the bag would move and it barely budged. I thought to myself, there's absolutely no reason to use the cart strap at this point since the Torq strap is so solid. Love the Zipperless ball pocket as well and I've had no problems with it opening up inadvertently as someone mentioned the other day. I don't use the 3 ball silo since the ZBP makes grabbing a ball so quick and simple. I should mention that the top divider system sets up real nice on the cart also.

One small complaint, and this is for walking or riding. Using the provided towel strap will put the towel directly over the valuables pocket, and the fact that it's a tight elastic loop means the towel is held there pretty tight. Makes it kind of a pain to get in the valuables pocket. I always think the towel is in the way though - I might try and put it somewhere else or use it as motivation to pull out my phone less!

I will throw in a quick tip on this one. Go get 4 small carabiners at your local army surplus or whatever, the keychain size. replace the metal loops with these makes life so much easier and looks cleaner on a push cart or golf cart

IMHO a sweet upgrade that can be done in under 10mins and for under $5
[/quote]

For this bag in particular? And is that just so you can take the straps off for when you use it on the cart?

Yes for this bag. I like the shoulder pads but i found that with the shock absorbtion system and the extra padding for the shouders that it was gettting in my way a bit when i was riding, or using my push cart.

Hello!

I just purchased this bag, got me the older 2012 model since it was much cheaper than 2013. I've noticed the leg problem too ...

Do you mind sharing details on how you modified it? That would really help me much!

Thank you!
